Pruning a Rose of Sharon For More Flowers and a Fuller Bush.

- We've had this bush for a few years, and it was in bad need of a good pruning. By simply pruning it, I was able to get more flowers and a fuller looking bush. I show both the before, and after.

When do we get to see actual pruning being done or instructions on where to prune? Sure, the bush looks great but not all bushes are pruned equally.
Good points Gray. I was not selective in how I pruned. If the limb looked too long, I cut it back. I did the same thing this year. There was nothing complicated about what I did. I cut the ends off of just about every limb. The longer limbs got trimmed more. I'm going to pin your comment in case others were wanting the same information.
Yes. I would like to see the actual pruning. That is why I clicked on your video. Nice results.
Thank you for showing the plant over time. Makes watching the clip very interesting. Good job
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice! Beautiful job!
Thanks!
Nice video. It’s rare to see someone record the follow up videos; so this was nice to see the result of your pruning.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
It is always well worth a good prune back to encourage the new growth, it was good to see the final result at the end of the vid. A lovely rose of Sharon
Thanks Mick! We like it, and so do the hummingbirds. It responded well to the pruning for sure.
Rose of Sharon are such beautiful shrubs. You've inspired me to prune my own. I like to eat the flower petals in salads, so I'll look forward to getting more flowers this summer. And I'll be able to eat the young leaves that are on my pruned branches, so double-win. It's good to know I don't have to prune them in the winter, with no leaves.
Interesting! I've never tried eating them. That would add some color to a salad. Ours is just now starting to leave out well. I pruned it this year about a month or so ago. We also have a variegated variety that is very small.
superb job there Jim !! thank you for showing us the stages from start to finish !!
Thanks!
I think this is just great. Thanks. Gives me courage and motivation. I can do this.
Yes, you can do it. Rose of Sharon bushes seem to be very forgiving in my experience. I meant to do it a little earlier, but I will be pruning ours again this week.
Looks like you did am excellent job Jim. Have a great weekend. Best wishes Bob.
Thanks Bob! You have a great weekend too.
Thank you!
You're welcome, Linda!
Looking good 😁👍
Thank you!
It liked the pruning , because it was full of flowers 🌸 😊
Yes, I think it responded well to the pruning. I should have done it sooner :)
Nice video, I enjoyed the time lapse. I just took on a one time yard work job that is inundated with overgrown rose of sharons...some of them are probably 10' and look really unkempt in the city. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Shari! I hope I was able to help a little. Good luck with that yard work job. They can really get big if you let them.
@@MidwestGardener The job went well, this hedge of rose of sharons was overflowing over the top of the neighbor's fence, like a waterfall, with wild grape vines tangling the mess. I was able to trim them down and reign them in so they look MUCH neater. Thanks again for posting, your video was quite helpful!
@@sharit7970 I'm glad that I could help a little. I can imagine the difference from your description.
thank you for posting. good info.
You're welcome!
Hey Jim, the bush looked GREAT!! T
Thanks T! I can't wait for warmer weather so things can start growing and blooming again.
It's beautiful!
Thanks Linda! The hummingbirds have been visiting it quite a bit lately on their way south.
Hi Jim, excellent pruning (hair cut) done by you the bush looked superb afterwards :)
Thanks Sue! It is amazing what a little pruning can do for a plant sometimes.
great voice and video.
Thank you very much!
There is one down my street and bees seem to love it.
Yes, I see lots of bees on ours too. And an occasional hummingbird. They are just a very dependable long lasting bush.
TFS🕊️
You're welcome!
This is a so helpful. I like how you trimmed it and would like to do the same for my Red Heart. :)
Thanks Diana! I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm looking forward to seeing ours bloom again....won't be long.
Thank you great video
You're welcome!
My notifications are messed up...again😔 so I'm just getting to see this. Same thing with Brent's but at least I'm getting them. Now if I'd just stop getting notifications from people I'm not even subscribed to!
But anyhoo I have to admit I was a little sad when yo said you were going to trim all the little seedlings lol. The after view put it all in perspective though. What a difference!👍
That's strange on the notifications. Hope they get that straightened out. Yes, it's too bad about the seedlings, but those Rose of Sharon bushes just produce so many of them. I have to admit that I don't prune bushes as much as I should. I don't know why, because it always seems to do them a world of good.
Nice job!! My rose of Sharon is dropping the buds maybe I need to prune it
That seems odd. It probably wouldn't hurt to prune it ever year or two.
Thank you
I actually did last year, it belonged to a friend that battled with cancer
Therefore it means a lot to me but at the beginning of spring gave me few flowers and now the buds fall off
@@elsa8577 I've never had trouble with ours dropping buds, so I'm not really sure what is going on there. If it was transplanted into a new location, it might take a few years to get reestablished. I have one that I planted a couple of years ago that is really slow growing right now. I think it will be find in time though. Good luck with yours!
Midwest Gardener thank you for replying, it did give me flowers at the beginning but after that this last month the buds just fall off
I am going to add rich soli to it since is in a container
Thank you, stay healthy
@@elsa8577 You're welcome. Oh, I see. It's possible that it might be happier in the ground, but I know sometimes that isn't possible.
Thanks for the video. How fast does it grow? In other words, how many years did it take to look like it does here in the video?
That depends on what growing conditions it was grown in. In 3 or 4 years they can quite a bit of size if they get what they need.
I read in the comment section that you pruned yours April 20th.
So do I need to wait and prune a "Rose of Sharon" in the springtime? It is late fall now and was hoping to prune them now. Just wasn't sure if I should prune them in the fall or wait for spring?
I have three of them but they produce very few blooms and aren't full bushy like yours. I am hoping a good pruning will take care of both problems, the amount of blooms produced and the fullness of the bush itself. Mine were given to me by my sister, I think 5yrs ago. I have never pruned them yet because they have been very slow growing for me.
I usually do it in the early spring before they leaf out. It should do fine though if you prune it in late fall.
@@MidwestGardener -Thank you for your response.
Was recommended your channel and find it very helpful!
Honestly you can not find a channel that will respond and answer your questions.
This video is a few years old, so actually I did not expect a response at all.
I am highly impressed!!!
New sub!
Again thank you for your response!! Very helpful!
You have a great day!
@@tonyaperry4763 You're welcome. Thanks subscribing, Tonya! It's much appreciated. I figure if you can take the time to watch my videos, I can take the time to answer a question once in a while. I don't have a great answer all of the time, but I'm glad to help if I can. You have a great day too!
I'm ready to have roses in my life 🥀🌹❤
Rose of Sharon is my favorite flower for hummingbirds.
Midwest Gardener I might have to add it to my garden someday. I love hummingbirds😍
I don't think mom and dad ever had them, but your great grandparents did.
Forgot to mention that we mostly see hummingbirds here when they are migrating south. We usually see the most beginning in July through September......depending on the weather. They go to our feeders, but they also visit the rose of sharon bushes just about as often.
Midwest Gardener awwww that's so awesome
Hi Jim, your Rose of Sharon is bursting with life. Good job.
Mine was doing fine but now I see little holes in the leaves and the buds are drying up and falling. What should I do to help the Rose of Sharon? 🤷♀️🤷♂️
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Do you think it could be a pest?
There're tiny micro white spots in the leaves?
I'm not sure what the holes in the leaf are, but it's late in the season, so It's not unusual for them to not look as they did in the middle of summer. I would trying watering it a little more often and see if that helps.
@@MidwestGardener Hi Jim, I went early to check on the Rose of Sharon and guess what? I found a couple of beetles coming out of the buds.
How can I help the Rose of Sharon? 😣
@@claudialu If it was my rose of sharon, I would spray some pyrethrin on those beetles.
@@MidwestGardener Thank you so much for your time and consideration. 🌱
Beautiful!! I saved some seeds from my brothers Rose of Sharon this fall should I plant them now or wait until spring? Thanks for sharing your tips.
Thanks Teri! I think the easiest way would be to prepare a place where you want the to grow, then plant the seeds in fall. They should come up in the spring. Then you can thin them to the exact number that you want. I have some come up below ours every spring.
My Rose of Sharon has gotten quite large (I was letting it grow out for a while for deck shade purposes), and I'd like to prune it late this fall after leaf drop. It still has a lot of buds on it that didn't open this season (they usually go dry and brown over the winter). Is it ok to cut those off while pruning? I'm assuming it will develop new buds next season, but wanted to check. Thanks!
Yes, it's ok to remove those, Joe. Mine does the same thing.
When did you do the pruning? Sorry, if you said it and I missed it. I have two 12’ tall bushes that didn’t bloom well this year.
I went back and checked the properties of the original video, and according to that, it was April 20th. I think you should see some results with a good pruning. I know it's a long ways off, but please drop back by and let us know how it goes.
Mine are spindly and I fight all the little suckers
Interesting. I don't prune anything other than the ends.
What time of the year did you do it?
Early spring.
Plant rose of broccoli! Get it? Lol.
Now that would be an impressive size for a broccoli rosette :)
