- How to prune rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus). Rose of Sharon should be dormant pruned to remove crossing branches, branches that grow back into the shrub and branches that grow in the wrong direction.

My dad planted a Rose of Sharon in the yard. He has passed away many years ago. The Rose of Sharon means a lot to me because of that. I have not touched it in many years it is so overgrown. Rose of Sharon has a lot of seedlings. You may be able to transplant one of the seedlings to spread the memory.

I was looking for how to overwinter my hibiscus and then I found you! I have a literal forest of Rose of Sharon in my yard and I love them. But, I've never really set my day aside to prune them. I'm so glad I found this. My rose of Sharon is getting more and more dense. It flowers profusely. Till now I've trimmed it down each year to keep it from getting higher than I could reach. Next year I'll be able to address the density.
Even when you cut the top of it in the fall does it still stay short for the time being until it grows taller?

Thank you for posting this! We just moved to Lincoln, NE from Albuquerque, NM and have one about 8 feet tall in the back yard. I had no idea how to prune it, or maintain it, but now I feel confident I can do it properly.

I was told in in the early 50's when my grandfather came back to the dairy farm and build hi BIBill house these were the most affordable tree/shrub. Mine are in tree form but I Bonsai and propagate the millions of unkillable seedling. A spring after sprouting they are about 2 ft natural spear straight and great for bonsai or a hedgerow.
Great job 'before' and 'after'. The R.O.S. now appears more majestic, imho with its verticality and labor of love.

I have about 8 of these in my backyard and this video is exactly what I needed. I trim them a bit here and there but generally didn't know what I was doing. Going to get a saw like that too because some of mine are really bad.

Thanks, and thanks for your concern for the Robin. It reminds me of the stone carving of a Robin and her nest at the top of a column in Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, BC, which commemorates the builders halting construction in that area until the eggs were hatched.

Great video. When I trim my rose of sharon, I plant all the branches that I cut.
They will grow beautifully.
It is one of the strongest plants I know and hard to kill, for those who are not good at taking care of plants.
Something else that happened to ne last year was that I hsd so much seeds.
I tossed them pn the ground and I had so many new plants and they have new collors. It is amazing.
This season I have actually too many seeds. It bloomed beautifully but I have seeds all over.
Could make a lot of money with them if I had the time to sell them

Thanks for showing it! I always read to cut down dead branches and crossing branches, but I inherited a garden (with years of no pruning for a lot of the shrubs, etc.) so this has been a learning process for sure! (Ours is flopping over in July and I wasn't sure how to start). I assume all these work for hibiscus double red althea as well
I have a few of these and was wondering how high they can grow and yours are wow really tall ! They look great ! Mine are a few years in the ground, from 5-gal cans and they are easily 6+ feet tall and growing nicely.. I now know, thanks to you that my hibiscus bushes can grow way, way, up if I want them to, and that is great! Thanks for all the work you did on your hibiscus and the great video, editing, etc... It is a lot of work i am sure... Loved that little folding saw you used.. It was really sharp and that always makes the work go faster and easier...

Oh wow I never knew. I was cutting it all the way to nothing. And it still came back every Summer as big and beautiful as always . But my rose of Sharon doesn’t grow as huge as yours, mine is about 5’ tall at most and my branches are not as thick as yours . I do love this bush. The huge beautiful pink flowers. They close at night and open in daytime. Next to my beloved butterfly bush, my rose of Sharon is my favorite shrub. Now I know to not cut it so much anymore. I didn’t know. I feel so bad.

I wish I had seen this video before I pruned our Rose of Sharon. We have a problem with our Rose of Sharon growing up and forsaking the lower branches, so it's looking very thin and gangly at the base so I cut the tree down by about 1/3 from the top to try and encourage it to 'bush up' rather than 'grow up' (hopefully). I'll have to go around it again in the Spring and do some more trimming based on your instruction here. Thank you!

My boyfriend bought a house last year and a friend of ours is giving me one of the pups off her own Rose of Sharon. I've already started tearing up the front of our yard to get ready for it next year, this is the first video I've found that explains it's pruning care in ways I can easily understand!! Do the pruned areas sprout new growth and how quickly? I've never had to prune anything (I just have my indoor pothos)

Thank you for such a thorough and detailed video . We just planted 10 three footers in a wood planter box across my deck as a divider from the neighbors . They look pretty healthy now and they are full in leaves . Is there any reason I wouldn't cut back straggly branches spring through summer. I want them to grow up but also meet each other eventually to create a screen . They are about 2 1/2 feet apart from each other
44 degrees the coldest winter🤣🤣🤣🤣 In Cleveland that would be the warmest temperature in winter.

You definitely know your plants and pruning! I have a rose of sharon that is already too tall (going into soffits) and needs to be pruned down in height about three feet now, before it grows another three feet. If I wait until it finishes blooming and then prune, will I lose next year's blooms? Thank you,

I wish you were in Masachuetts to help me. I have these bushes growing in my front yard. 6 all together. 3 down either side of my front yard. They are so out of control. I don't know where to begin. We were just going to use electric hedge clippers. Glad I came upon your video. I wonder if a regular landscaping company would know how to trim them back.
We recently (last year) planted a row of rose of sharon (maybe 8) to become a hedge and I'm thrilled at how they are growing..... these were free branches (someone elses pruning I guess). But my question as they are blooming like crazy and love all the flowers..... can I cut them for a vase? and I read that they are edible..... would I just snip them off as they bud?

Thank you for the video. I live in upstate NY. Can you prune in late fall after the flowers have bloomed? Also from last year the deer have eaten my rose of sharon trees terribly, so this year we have put fencing around them, but I wanted to prune them before winter unless that is not a good idea?
I have three Rose Of Sharon growing in a row. Two bloomed awesomely this year. But one looks sick. A couple of green buds but for the most part it looks as if it is dying. Do I prune it this winter and give it another year? Or do I dig it up and give up on it?

I have several young plants (2-5 years old) and 2 that are at least 10-15 years old. I pruned them all heavily this past winter and they are doing wonderful now. You will probably have to prune it every year in some fashion.This video is an excellent depiction of the problems you will encounter, but I like them and have propagated several.
