- Welcome to another overnight solo wild camping trip amongst some of Scotland’s more remote mountains and stunning landscapes.
Little did I anticipate the early morning wind gusts that would allow me to compare two very different tents, the MLD Duomid and the Hilleberg Soulo.
Beinn Bhrotain and Monadh Mòr , from Glen Feshie.

Just done these munros last Autumn, great to see them again on video. Look forward to every video, dropped you a few coffees keep them up!
Awesome, thank you! And thank you very much for watching as it is much appreciated. Atb
Thank you Ray, lovely to see you out and about again 😁
Thanks for watching John. Atb
I had the same problem (the thermarest being slippy) like you when i was camping up the pentlands so i bought the thermarest Synergy Luxe Sheet to go over it and a bit of rubber silicon to go under it (at the hip).
trekker chair is also nice as it allows you to sit up in your tent after a long hike and it has nice thermal properties for a chair.
Thanks for sharing. Atb
Thanks Ray, another nice video with some beautiful shots. Your youtube videos have the composition of great film making! I like the way you film yourself "doing the hike", sometimes this can feel a bit contrived in other youtube hiking films but it never does in your videos, just adds to the atmosphere!
Can I ask, how is the headroom when lying down in the duomid when compared to the soulo?
Thanks!
Thank you very much! Cheers for watching it is much appreciated. Atb
Seen you today in blacks, rose street, Edinburgh. I wanted to say that I watch all the videos but shyness got in my way. Amazing videos, keep them up 👍🏻
Should have come over mate. Thanks for watching and Atb.
Cracking video Ray you definitely banged out some miles mate that cloud formation looked strange I'm out on a bivvi camp in the cheviot hill's tomorrow I've got the bug for camping in the hill's instead of the wood's atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Nice one mate and hope you have agreat time at the cheviots, Atb.
Greetings from Finland! Your videos inspired me and my wife explored hiking and camping 😊 Your videos are 5/5 👍🏻
That is awesome! Atb
Good stuff Ray, another good trip mate ..cheers Stevie
Thanks 👍 Atb
Its perhaps the best way to do those two and visit Tom dubh ... good effort too with that sack!. The boulders going up onto Bhrotain reminded me of tootie fruities :) Got the same tent and can vouch for its wind firmness too ... I prefer it to the atko. The trailstar is up another level of quietness too inside .
What a nice surprise to find your video on a Sunday afternoon, surprising difference in the performance of the two tents, some great scenic shots and it must be wonderful to get that solitude, keep doing the videos 👍👏.
Cheers and many thanks for taking time to watch. Atb
Superb as always Ray 👍
Thanks for watching mate. Atb
Thanks Ray, really enjoyed this one with some great scenery as always.
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Atb
Your videos seem to come along rarely, but always worth while watching. Thanks for sharing the journey 🙏🏽
Thanks for watching. Atb
Thanks for sharing your latest adventure Ray. That long hike before setting up camp certainly will be good training for future hikes this year. ATB Derek
Cheers derek and thanks for watching. Atb
Another great vid Ray, totally captivating and enjoyable to watch. 🙂
Many thanks! Atb.
Good effort Ray - that was one long hike - great video and your tent looked solid 👍 catch up soon
Thanks 👍 Atb
Fantastic video as always Ray - looking forwards to some of these trips you have planned!! - ATB Tom
You and me both! Atb
Looked a cracking wee camp with awesome scenery , never even skipped parts of the video that i usually do with most other videos , good stuff 👍🏻🏕
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and Atb.
Wow, the space. Both land and tent. Enjoyed the pace Ray, and the white chocolate!
Cheers mate. Good to get out as its been few and far between reccently. Atb
Nice to see a duomid out and about doing it's stuff. Nice video. Yip agree the space is nice very nice to have
Thanks 👍 Going to try the double mesh inner with it next time. Had one from years ago and never tried it. Atb
Great vlog Ray and loved the landscape!👏👏👏Glad the new tent passed merit! Looking forward to your next camp!
Thanks 👍 Cheers Allan, Atb.
Well, that was very interesting. I am a bit too old in my seventies to do quite much exercise, but still do little bits, enjoying the reviews all the same. Appreciate your posts along with people like Murray on another channel. Not much monetary reward for the effort but I hope the likes from people like myself can make up for that.
Glad you enjoyed it! I do it more as a time capsule of my trips to be honest more than anything. Thanks for watching. Atb
Lovely to see you again Ray, and the Duomid looks happy in the 'gusts' but 20 mph is hardly a challenge. Next I'd like to see a comparison at what most people would agree really is a strong wind - 45 to 55 mph.
Thanks for watching. May get out and try at some point. Here is an example of several from Daron Linney at 50mph. ruclips.net/video/hpwOpzNmoXQ/видео.html
Great video again Ray. Fantastic views and landscape. Editing and video shots were top notch!👍
Thank you so much 😀 Atb.
Superb Ray. Good to see you out doing/filming the munros again - like the old days 😊
Glad you enjoyed it and do hope to get out more. Everytime I put a dent in the to-do list at home my wife keeps adding more :) Atb
@@RS.Outdoors yeah that list never seems to get smaller. Far better to stick to the munros. Look forward to your next outing.
I have a Liteway Pyraomm Duo tarp-tent, same shape as the Duomid, and that one also performs great in high winds. The pyramid shape really is a good one when dealing with stormy weather.
Always nice to see one of your new videos show up for breakfast :D
Thanks very much for watching and I have heard the Pyraonm is a interesting pyramid tent as well. Atb
Nice one. Well Done. 👌
Thanks ✌️ Atb
Great content, as always. Keep it up!
Cheers mate. Atb
Must have something big planned if you're carrying for the exercise Ray... Lovely camp and very nice time lapse... Cheers.. 🤜🤛😎
Sure do mate and your latest film wass a bit of inspiration. Atb
I had mat like that myself.I was climbing back up to the top all night . Nice video bud.
Thanks for wacthing Malky, much appreciated. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors I had a magic night up Meall Ghaordaidh Mon night inversion was amazing like you had with Murray and a spectre times like that make the huffing and puffing up worthwhile .
Duomid all the way Ray... 🤘
Thanks for watching mate. Atb
Another good one Ray. The A frame makes a big difference. Have you ever tried a few drops of silent on the pad, watered down with a drop of turps can also be used on the bottom of the pad to stop slippage on the inner floor. 😊
That should read Silnet, the silicone based seam sealant.
Thanks for the tip mate. Atb
Another cracking video Ray. Now I have a question if you don't mind if you had a choice (I know you have used these) what would you pick. Duomid, Solomid xl or Hexpeak v4. I'm really torn which to go for based on winter use and with standing high winds.Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Atb Eamon
Hi Eamon. Its not an esay one to answer but would say it would be between the Duomid and the Hexpeak. The Duomid is great but is not setup from standard for winter in my view but again that is just my opinion. The duomid can be bought with a mesh inner which I dont like for Scottish, UK weather. However many folks I now such as Stripyhatguy on YT doesnt even use an inner for his. I like a solid inner to keep any breeze from blowing through but you have to get one from China and modify to fit in a Duomid which is a faff. The Hexpeak comes with a solid inner but can be a bit of a faff setting up the outer due to its Hex shape. The tents both have pros and cons which is a bit of a pain in trying to explain which you should go for. If you have never had a tent like this then maybe get a second hand Hexpeak from Fleabay to try and see how you get on first. Atb
@RS.Outdoors Thanks very much Ray, really appreciate the detailed response. Have to do a bit more research and eventually make a decision. ATB
Eamon
Hey Ray, what kind of orange pocket are you carrying? It would be nice, if you have the time, to tell me.
It is a Ribzwear pack. Got them many years ago but think you can still get them from the USA but only come in black now. ribzwear.com/
Thanks Ray for your camera work, wisdom and opinions. I have a Hilleberg Soulo (2.8 kilos) and a ‘half the weight’ Enan (1.2 kilos) as insurance for those wild nights. Duomid is safely a three season l guess. Would love a ‘live’ comparison test. *I once bent a black label Soulo pole in 80mph+ winds 😮 Duomid?
Thanks for watching Andy. Maybe one day i will give it a go during a storm. Here is an example of several from Daron Linney at 50mph. ruclips.net/video/hpwOpzNmoXQ/видео.html
Nice video 👊👊👊
Thanks ✌ Atb.
Another great video. How tall a person do you think would go in the Duomid and inner? Tempted to bite the bullet!
If you use an inner I would say 5' 10" maybe 6' at a push but would be very tight. Many use the Duomid with a bivvy for this reason. YoutUber Stripy Hat Guy uses this method a lot. I do have the double mesh inner from MLD that come with the tent still to try and this could make a huge difference in the internal space. Will be trying it out on an upcoming film to see what it is like. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors cheers! 6ft1 here, so probably need the XL
Never to old for a bivvy camp Ray! 😉 Can I ask what your back pack your using mate?
Hi mate. It is the Gregory Optic 48 which has been discontinued a little while now. Manged to pinch that one second hand from fleabay. Pretty good bag and not too heavy. It is much like the Opsrey Exos but think it fits better. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors cheers Ray!👍
How is it going?~so professional sharing!adios! friend-;)
might need to start saving for a duomid, do they still do the Lanshan 4 season tzip inner ? been looking for one of those !
Great Video as always.
Stunningly beautiful,as usual 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Ray, cracking video mate, some real wild and rugged landscape. Thanks for sharing your trip as always. Cheers Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴
Thanks 👍 Dave for watching. Atb
