As both a professional lifelong woodworker and hobby metal machinist, this project impressed the heck out of me, Fran. I had my doubts, but you totally pulled it off with style. Bravo!
Just magnificent! A wonderful accomplishment of art and engineering, I'm so eager to see the finished assembly with all the parts you makers have put together!
I'm so glad you got to be a part of this project and I'm really happy for the way it turned out. I love the way the walnut looks with the brass bushings.
Your face looks extremely relaxed and happy now. Last time I checked your video you were going through the stress of relocation and it could be seen. It appears you have made it through just fine. When one door closes, another opens. Keep on ‘a keepin’ on!!
Fran, I have watched the other maker's videos of their latch builds. Some are 3D printed and some are machined from aluminum. Not to take anything from them, but your wood latch has them beat by a country mile. I especially like the fact that your latch is intended as and homage to the journey from wooden biplanes to the cutting edge tech in the Apollo machines.
You should be very proud of yourself. It is a masterpiece of wood engineering. Leonardo would have been impressed. I hope Adam Savage watches every minute of your build videos. Cheers
wow that latch looks amazing .. ..so much work ..but it paid off ..you're quite justified in expressing your pride in your work ...I know I couldn't have made that from wood...you've definitely gone over and above....
Great job! One of the things that they found out about engineering drawings from the Apollo project is that they are the concept. If changes had to be made, they never went back and made as-built drawings. You really had to examine the finished part to see what had been done with all the in field modifications. So in the end you did what the engineers at the time were doing. Eyeballing it and making changes in the field.
That is a thing of beauty! Part of it's charm is that it is so compact, an important consideration for space flight. Someday, I'd love to see it some winter evening, sitting on your mantelpiece, you there by the fire, retelling the story of it's creation, step by delicious step.
This is the dedication and craftsmenship, that brought the Wright brothers plane into air, and landed Apollo 11 on the Moon! I am deeply impressed! PS: I wrote this comment, after viewing the first minute, so I didn't know, You would also talk about the Wright brothers! :-)
Congratulations Fran! Pride is an excellent word for the realization this amazing project, and having duly *earned* a showcase position at the Smithsonian! Well done! BTW: I love the shipping box!
Congratulations Fran! As others are saying, thank you so very much for taking us along, the highs and especially the difficult moments. It's all important and all-important.
Hi Fran, congrats with this beautifully crafted piece. It will definitely stand out between all other pieces. Can't wait to see Adam assemble it onto the hatch.
Wow! Congratulations Fran. You are one determined lady. These videos should be on the curriculum of any engineering or design school. Amazing to think of your creation being exhibited in the Smithsonian. Feel proud girl, you've earned it!
Congrats, Fran! It came out great! I've only seen a couple of the other ones so far and they're not nearly as labor intensive! It's quite the accomplishment just from the materials used alone.
Who would have thought that when this latch was first made over fifty years ago that you would be reproducing it in walnut. Well done. You have honored all those people who built the very first door.
Fran, that turned out AMAZINGLY well! I'm glad you signed the back, artists should always sign their work! I'm so happy to see that those hours invested resulted in a piece that is both beautiful and functional. You never cease to amaze!
Beautiful work. So cool to see you beaming in your recount of this incredible contribution to an awesome project. You can't seem to stop smiling and that made me smile.
Hope this and the assembled command module hatch will be on display at the Smithsonian at least for their year-long Apollo 50 celebration and find a good home thereafter. I'll bet Fran's latch will stand apart from the rest. As a certain Dave likes to say, a thing of beauty is a joy forever. This is definitely a thing of beauty, and it has been a joy to watch it being made.
Nice Fran, that wood finish will make the project glow in a different light. I started watching the machinist community making these awesome metal parts, but the wood fusion will make it just something else. Congratulations, that is some company you are all part of, Adam still amazes me as any thing he gets into generates so much hoopla. Cheers!
Nice to see you upbeat instead of stressed out.. I like the quote at the end of the credits.. Most of us have probably used just about every tool as a hammer at some point (even if we really shouldn't..).
That Cool Yes, it is an honor to participate in this project, each piece is very valuable, what an interesting mechanism ...! Thank you for sharing with us.
Bravo Fran! A worthy contribution to the technological miracle that is Apollo. I'm happy you're happy with this excellent piece - and rightfully proud of it! It's a beautiful combination of art and engineering.
A very worth while endeavor encompassing a high level of craftsmanship which results in a spectacular work of industrial art. The feeling of accomplishment and pride are more than justified. Congratulations and God Bless from Florida.
Hey Fran, watched a lot of your electronics videos (and the moving vids), didn't even know you do woodworking. That is a beautiful piece. So I finished watching your vid, your thoughts at the end were beautiful and moving. I had seen a couple of the other project egress videos from various makers I follow, but finally decided to go check out the project page. Thank you for steering me over there. What a fantastic project.
Congratulations on your project completion. I will now pass on an insider aerospace saying - "Hog it out of stone with bucky beaver teeth"). This means getting it done with no going back! That's what it feels like to do something never done before!!
i found out about this project, because i subscribe to, this old Tony . what ! every thing from sand casting metals to 3D printing to 5 axis CNC milling etc , great to you see you made it work.
What a beautiful piece of work. Definitely art! Put me in mind of not only a piano mechanism, but also the workings of a large pipe organ with a tracker rod mechanism. Wooden logic! Well done. And thank your for the journey.
OMG what an amazing part and effort. I was sceptical when i heard that you're working with wood but this is excellent, you absolutely should be proud. I'm super glad that they got you involved, because i have seen you really excited about classic space tech before.
The F1 engines are much the same as that latch. We have the documentation, but it isn't complete/exact. Each F1 engine was a custom build to make all the parts fit and work. So you got the same joys as the builders of the F1.
As both a professional lifelong woodworker and hobby metal machinist, this project impressed the heck out of me, Fran. I had my doubts, but you totally pulled it off with style. Bravo!
Glad to see that you realized your vision. Very gratifying. Congrats and it looks beautiful!!
Congratulations on a really successful build and for creating such a beautiful object! Thanks for taking us on the journey with you.
You're becoming attached to latches? There must be a catch there somewhere.
Boo....
@@RobertSzasz C'mon! That was very "Punny". You get a cheer from me, Ampair!
Your pun is so transparent! (One for the digital design nerds there)
*laughs like Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds*
The puns! Dear God the puns!
I had my doubts when you said you were making it out of wood. You proved me wrong...Its beautiful, good job.
THIS IS WHY WE SPONSOR YOU! So happy and glad to see your labors come to such fruition. I'm inspired and enlightened.
Just magnificent! A wonderful accomplishment of art and engineering, I'm so eager to see the finished assembly with all the parts you makers have put together!

Absolutely beautiful Fran! You have incredible determination. Nicely done, and congrats on being asked to be a part of this project!
wow that latch looks amazing .. ..so much work ..but it paid off ..you're quite justified in expressing your pride in your work ...I know I couldn't have made that from wood...you've definitely gone over and above....
I love that you were a part of this effort. You did a beautiful job. You richly deserved the recognition that the project afforded. Kudos!

ok.. the wood looks good. now I see your thought process behind it, I like it a lot. congrats on a completed project fran.

You should be proud, I sure would be. Thats not just a latch, its a piece of art. Well done young lady.
Looks great. I love brass and walnut. It seems like that's what I always gravitate to in my projects
Fran, I stumbled across your channel through project egress, so glad I did
Thanks
Way to go, Fran! You are correct about the honor of participating in the project. It's really an amazing concept and so worthy of the Smithsonian!
Who would have thought that when this latch was first made over fifty years ago that you would be reproducing it in walnut. Well done.

That is one absolutely beautiful piece of work.
Beautiful work. So cool to see you beaming in your recount of this incredible contribution to an awesome project. You can't seem to stop smiling and that made me smile.
Nice one Fran - that's a thing of beauty. Lovely to have used walnut - a nice wood to work with and looks fab
Hope this and the assembled command module hatch will be on display at the Smithsonian at least for their year-long Apollo 50 celebration and find a good home thereafter. Congratulations on a job well done - you may indeed be very proud of this project! You inspire me to think about making one ...
Bravo, Fran! It's gorgeous, and unexpected, and indeed a labour of love. It's a privilege to share this experience.
I have that same calculator! Only difference is, the faceplate of mine is warped. Love that old red TI display.
Nice work. Way to go!
Nice Fran, that wood finish will make the project glow in a different light. I started watching the machinist community making these awesome metal parts, but the wood fusion will make it just something else. Congratulations, that is some company you are all part of, Adam still amazes me as any thing he gets into generates so much hoopla. Cheers!
I have now seen a few of these. CNC aluminium, resin cast, 3D printed, but this is the one I want as a widget on my desk.
Totally awesome piece of art+science+passion+craft+history
Wow! Great to see the finished item. The tools, technique and skill was great to see. Thanks Fran!

Fran triumphant! Well done. Thanks for the detailed description of the process. I wonder if the other latch makers saw the difference in the drawing?

What a beautiful piece of work. Definitely art! Put me in mind of not only a piano mechanism, but also the workings of a large pipe organ with a tracker rod mechanism. Wooden logic! Well done. And thank your for the journey.
Great accomplishment Fran! I think it has a bit of Steampunk about it with the wood and brass.
Savage really does explain what everyone involved is doing with their Lives. I only hope it catches on to the rest of us. Thanks
That's beautiful work Fran. I've made wood furniture for years, and I would find that type of detail difficult to execute.
Beautiful work!
That is really impressive work. I love that you used walnut.
That's genuine craftsmanship, so impressive. Props to all involved makers of course, but that is in a class of its own.
OMG what an amazing part and effort. I was sceptical when i heard that you're working with wood but this is excellent, you absolutely should be proud. I'm super glad that they got you involved, because i have seen you really excited about classic space tech before.
Did you make another one to keep?.....what a great conversation piece it would be!
But then it wouldn't be unique anymore...
I think you figured out why they don't make rockets out of oak. Congratulations for finishing. It looks beautiful!
That is awesome. And looking at the project, that'll be interestng to see all the pieces come together as well.
YAY!! Congratulations, Fran!!
Beautiful work Fran.
What a lovely piece of work, looks stunning and works flawlessly. Great job. 👍
Looks like all that hard work paid off, you've built a really beautiful machine!
Awesome work, Fran! Love it!
It's a thing of beauty Fran, as well as being fully functional. You are right to be very proud..
The F1 engines are much the same as that latch. We have the documentation, but it isn't complete/exact. Each F1 engine was a custom build to make all the parts fit and work. So you got the same joys as the builders of the F1.
Beautiful work. Love the look of walnut
Awesome simple awesome !!! 20 days well spent it's a beauty
