Oak wouldn't be my first choice by any means for a piece like this . It's proneness to fracturing along it's grain lines is a real drawback. A nice blank of Hickory or Elm would be much more desirable . Just my 2 cents worth. Cool project though 👍
Very few hickorys and virtually no chestnut or dogwoods left in the DEEP south... the panhandle of florida once was covered by all of these plus some more obscure woods like black walnut and chinquapin. So sad.
Fran, please look at Inkscape. It is free open source, runs on Windows, MAC, and my favorite, Linux. It can import AutoCAD DXF files and save as SVG files. It may help with your project with not to much of learning curve with your skills.
The more I watch your channel, the more I am impressed by your talents and expertise! I can barely screw two boards together without making a right mess of things. Me run a lathe or milling machine? HAHAHAHA! Me doing CAD work? Also laughable. I have a hard enough time operating a simple paint program. But I love watching intricate work being done, and genuinely appreciate fine craftsmanship. It always amazes me the talent and vision some people have in order to do this type of work!

As someone who is proficient at Bridgeport and lathe work this is not an easy project to get done .. especially with the pressure of making sutch a historically important replica...let alone make it out of wood ...wow...I do worry about Oaks tendancy to get the shakes (split along the grain) ...I wish you all the luck in the world and look forward to seeing the updates... this looks like it could be a very interesting series..
The Apollo program was -in my view- the best engineering in the 20th century beside the development of Integrated circuits. Nice that you focus again on that topic.
Have you considered 3D printing or Milling negative test jigs for things like the two holes in that linkage? So you can test parts against jigs that simulate the interaction with parts not yet made.

I have an old rotary phone on my desk. It dials fine, but the modern ring voltage is too low to ring the bells. Also, heaven help you if you need to deal with a touchtone voicemail type system :)

Almost all of NASA's technical documentation is online, prepare to get lost and come out days later knowing about NiMH battery bank cooling, vacuum drying of waste, ergonomics in microgravity, and Austronesian Tropical Parasites.

something that might help in the future: they also provided fusion360 .f3d cad files. these can be opened in fusion360(which is free) and you can then make CAM toolpaths directly in fusion or export it as .step, .iges, or even .svg from a face.

The latch arm looks like a upper locking assy. from a upper latch assembly from a panic exit bar... Older von duprin style. You will most likely see them on an old church or city community center that hasn't been retrofitted. I guess what I'm missing is the _why_ for creating a model of an egress hatch? What is the point of a _model_ of that particular item? Perhaps that was covered somewhere but I seem to have missed it.
I think the idea was to have a central project of an Apollo theme that could rally together many makers interests and challenge them to be creative in their approach.

It doesn't seem that long since you mentioned an upcoming secret project. I didn't think we would hear more about it until it was done. If there are 15 latches and you are making one, are there other people working on the other 14? A while ago I had a case where I got an STL model and needed to alter it so I used the STL file as reference and created a new version of the model in Rhinoceros 3D. Where did you find the STL files for the latch parts? You got me to search Thingiverse for Apollo related models and there are quite a few interesting ones I may download and print with my 3D printer. Good luck with your project.

Your making your way job more complicated than it has to be.... I could replicate the entire model in fusion 360 within an hour and have the gcode for all of it ready to run within 1-2 hours milling it on a cnc router isn't complicated. if your machine is that difficult get something better. you got way too much to think about and need to work on lightening the load. make things easier on yourself. this is the first part i've seen so far but i hope you get a good part without too much hassle.

Fusion 360 Fran, free for startups earning under 10k per annum, reads dwg and stl/step spits out svg. Very easy learning curve, powerful.

Try Autodesk Fusion 360 with the Shaper Utilities plugin instead of the Illustrator workflow, it saves a lot of time and headaches

Your making your way job more complicated than it has to be....
I could replicate the entire model in fusion 360 within an hour and have the gcode for all of it ready to run within 1-2 hours milling it on a cnc router isn't complicated. if your machine is that difficult get something better.
you got way too much to think about and need to work on lightening the load. make things easier on yourself.
this is the first part i've seen so far but i hope you get a good part without too much hassle.
