I think Kirstin saved this performance bc the boys mics weren’t behaving properly! They all sounded beautiful tho it was just the microphones which I know wasn’t PTXs fault at all. Still a lovely performance!
Pentatonix Sheet Music it’s cause Kristin was belting the whole time and everyone else was in their comfort zone or lower- I bet they were all technically at the same level she was just eating it
I think Kirstin’s time on broadway has been altering her projection, ultimately making her voice more powerful. I think that, and the horrible mic mixing *none of these things are PTX’s fault* played a part. I still loved it though, and would not be disappointed if they performed it just like this again! Love pentatonix!😊💜
Because its the Kentucky Derby and the invited Pentatonix... I love Kirstin big time...but she is not the group. If the Mic's had been setup correctly you would have heard everyone.
I heard them a little, but not enough. From what I heard of Mitch’s portion (I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be a lead part in the first place but you can hardly hear him), some of his parts and note changes were vital in the transitioning of the piece. You also can’t really hear Scott in some of the later harmonies and he’s a pretty important piece as one of the middle ranges among Matt, Mitch and Kirstin. It came across well enough but I’m sure if we could actually hear all of the parts, it would sound better.
First of all without Mitch,Kevin,Scott and Matt they wouldn’t be ptx (as this was actually said by Scott himself). I get the mic balance was bad but pls don’t say “I do not understand why the rest of the guys are there”, because it’s pretty clear they wouldn’t be where they are right now if they didn’t have eachother
I guess that doesn't bother me given the fact they were singing in rain, outside. For an enclosed arena it'd be below the normal standards, but outside? Nah.
Kristin Peterson The mic balancing was off and you could tell they weren't doing well. Struggling with pitch and everything. Maybe it's errors in their in ear monitors or something who knows. But the mic was the biggest issue amongst us. We've been with them and we know that much balance is key for them or they don't sound as good as they are.
Everyone needs to stop with the bad comments saying that they sounded horrible cause they dont, i think that they sounded amazing and i love them so much. Mitch is literally an angel i live him so much
Why does no place besides a concert venue EVER know how to balance the mics right??? Even with the bad mics, they still sounded amazing and beautiful!!
I wish the sound people would do their job! ! ! I am a Pentaholic from waaaaay back on the Sing off when they were competing so I have nothing but love for them. But this was Absolutely NOT their best performance. I know the mics weren't right. Matt, Scott and Mitch were off key for most of the song because you could tell none of the 3 could get in key but Kristen just kept going. She must have taken her earbud out and just sang and didn't listen to the PA systems either.
C Liles A pentaholic who doesn’t know the girl’s name? It’s *Kirstin* not Kristen. As for the performance, I agree the mic balance was way out. However Kirstin was also pitchy in places and I could barely hear Mitch, Kevin or Matt. I don’t think they could hear themselves properly either which would have meant they lost the ability to ensure they were all in tune with one another and balanced. Had Kirstin known she was way louder than the rest she could have adjusted accordingly. Of course, the imbalance may have been down to the TV feed. Hopefully they sounded better live.
Yes. I know her name is Kirstin. Started out as Kirstie. Changed it to the full Kirstin. And yes. I am a Pentaholic. Every Pentaholic I have ever known or had any interaction with has been kind, uncritical and tolerant.
I love PTX, but this wasn't the greatest. Could barely hear Scott, couldn't hear Matt and Kevin at all. All I heard was Mitch and Kirstin! They were way too loud! I'm sure live this sounded great but over tv was crap. When when when are they going to triple check mics!
Yeah you ACTUALLY think that the Kentucky Derby Managing Board (Old School Southern Horse Breeders) are going to sweat over mic balance or even give a darn, they want you to sing the National Anthem and sit down, so the horses can run.
I was there and it actually sounds better on this video. It was the most horrible thing I have ever heard. These people should stick to singing at weddings.
No Name Their live performances are usually good but here Kirstin went flat towards the end and the mic balance was horrible. Still, this doesn't mean they are bad singers. They are amazing singers. They probably didn't have enough time to practice this arrangement and are obviously tired.
No Name You've not heard their other performances. This wasn't their best because mic balancing is shit. If you watch other live performance on TV with GOOD mic balancing like on James Corden, they sound basically the same as the studio version. Not to mention they're singing in the rain. You're probably just salty that you'll never be as good as them. 🤷🏻
Can people stop criticizing this performance? If they sounded flat or off it's because they were and they were because of the mics. AND before you "criticize" the arrangement, realize that they cannot do everything the same as other artists. They are A CAPELLA some things have to be different. They also did not change the lines at all it's called echoing the lines and is an impressive thing to do.
Rylee, sorry but performances like that make trained musicians cringe.. Im just happy it dont happen often. I will call them as i see (hear) them. you get to hammer me for a bad choice of words.. I piss English majors off all the time.
Dan Bunch I understand from that performance because the tech was all over the place but if you see their other performances where their mics are properly balanced and everything they sound amazing
Rylee ive watched everthing they have a video on..over and over. I love PTX but like everyone else, their human...ruclips.net/video/ZvFypZckHRc/видео.html
You can’t blame them, they were were trying to create harmony. Although this is not not one of their best, watch Fergie. The microphone was too off balance. And Kirstin has a powerful voice which is why they put her on harmony. So if you’re a hater, you may as well back off and hate as much as you want, but please keep it to yourself. Share opinions but don’t be rude.
Aww that's a shames Kirstens level was too high so the sound wasn't as beautifully blended as usual, but they are still the best vocal group in the world! 😍 🌎 🎶
unbalanced mic volumes. And I felt awkward for Kevin doing that beatbox. He should've sang instead. Scott's seems struggling again hitting on high notes. I'm a pentaholic, I love them and I just want them to be better. I know they're better than this.
Agree on the Kevin bit. I don’t think he should have sang because they adapted this from an old version and Kevin doesn’t even have vocals set up for this. He should have done a far more simple beatbox pattern though. A simple snare roll and a cymbal was all they needed. Scott’s voice is changing drastically but I think it’s just dropping in general to a lower tone, not a loss of talent. He’s about to push 30 and a lot of singers (especially baritones like Scott and even some tenors) experience a drop in the deepness of their voice. It’s like a 2nd puberty
Nice arrangement, crappy mic balance. Matt, Kevin, Mitch and Scott’s mics were WAY too low. All you could hear was Kirstin. Idk how the sound people didn’t notice the balance and gain.
Voice like angels. I love PTX and they can do no wrong. Normaly. It wasn't just Kirstie's mic or that she went flat just before the ending. Mitch and Scott were not in sync with each other and the arrangement ment was too complicated to not be done perfectly. Still it's not PTX's fault. I blame Fergi and her horrible arrangement. She probably put everyone under too much pressure now. ATTENTION all future Nat Anthem singers; leave the original arrangement alone. Marven Gaye's rendition at the NBA finals was a one time thing and the phenomenon in not likey to be repeated. Pentaholic For Life. Love them. Edit: I like the arraignment better after a couple more listens. I just wish they had chance to practice it to perfection before singing it live.
do they have court dates? or did you mean arrangement all the times you put arraignment? lol i thought once was enough to use the wrong word but you did it at least three times! anyway just thought you'd have corrected it when it says you edited the post! btw arraignment (the word you used) means: The first step in a criminal prosecution wherein the defendant is formally advised of the charges against him.
Chilly Jacks , of course I meant Arrangement and not Arraignment. That was just me typing on my phone and not even looking back. The edit was just me adding a note at the end of the comment and still not catching the mistake. I have a habit of just trusting my phone and Google more than my own spelling which tends to be phonetic.
Many are picking on this performance, and I agree and disagree at the same time. The mic balance was way off. The trio sounded tired (they are: press for the album, solo projects, performances). And the balance didn't make it any better. But to those who picked on their arrangement saying "They should've sang it the way it is meant to be sung." This arrangement is pure genius. The harmonies are amazing. I'd like you to watch the same arrangement 6 years ago. This performance isn't the best but the arrangement is definitely not bad.
Hey the mic balance is wayy off again, who is surprised? (This is coming from a hardcore Pentaholic!) Since I could really only hear Kirstin, I can say she sounded good. Hopefully they were all heard better at the location.
I also am a pentaholic and thought what a great video to watch, them singing The Nat'l Anthem. Wow...I was shocked. Read some posts, seen your thought of listening again and could barely make it to the end. I am severely disappointed.
In this case im glad they didnt..Matt was at the extreme edge of his range and its hard to sing in tune.. thankfully Kirstens mic was the one turned up to high. Shes the one that sang in tune the best.
Dan Bunch I respectfully disagree with you. The last few live performances the bass notes are barely heard because Matt is a different kind of bass than Avi was. He is still great and sounds amazing on the recorded album. They need to turn him up in live performances because the base carries a cappella groups, in addition, balance is very important in a cappella. Still love them. They still sound amazing even if they are not balanced.
You performed well, as usual. Thank you. I wish the balance would have been better so we could actually hear your work as penned. An aside note based on my opinion is that a lot of us prefer to hear our anthem performed with arrangements that are closer to the original treatment. The obvious confusion of people that were trying to sing "their anthem" is witness to this thought. But again, thank you for your professional efforts.
Sounds well balanced with headphones till the end with the Kirstin's mic sounding like it was turned up..... I could still hear the harmonies tho, sounded good
Amazing job you guys in sure all of you were amazing, but the mix balance was terrible, Matt was not heard at all, nor was Scott, or Mitch the only people you could hear clearly was Kirsten, and Kevin. Anyway amazing job love you guys!!
Let's forget the terrible mic balance for a moment.... I was happy to see those brave soldiers saluting and those who showed respect by placing their hands over their hearts; this brought me to tears! Maybe the NFL could take a cue from the Derby! God bless America again; only God can bring us back from the brink of hell's abyss! Oh, and yes big smiles to Pentatonix for always being professional!
They should've made the speaker or mic of Scott louder than the rest.. it's just Kirstin I hear.. especially in the ending part and it makes Scott the accompany instead of Kirstin and Mitch lol
i feel bad for matt, having to sing this arrangement live. the end is supposed to be this big beautiful. moment ending with a B1, but it's so out of his comfort zone he ends up being so sharp he sings a C#2
I hit thumbs up for pentatonix but not for those people! The people are supposed to be singing the National anthem of their country with respect and love, some even don't know where to put their hands wodering where (On their heart or on the head) trying to figure out if they will take it after those guards (salute) correct me if i'm wrong but i think it's wrong to act like that when National Anthem is playing.
I wasn't just the mic balance (which was horrible) but also singing outside is a whole lot different. The wind carries sound and screws with it. All those excuses aside, I was not a fan of the arrangement. I don't mind a bit of tinkering and I LOVE Pentatonix, but this was just off. Give me Whitney Houston's (RIP) performance any day. A few small changes, but the melody left firmly intact.
See, all the people complaining about mic problems are RIGHT, but they should also put on headphones cause that's the only way you're suppose to listen to Pentatonix, it fixes the problems a bit.
Watching the people in the stands was as disappointing as the mic balance. The pitch did seem off, but it is hard to tell when the mics are so weird. I would love to hear this in a better environment.
Everybody's worrying about the mics, but I'm worrying about how the people were being so rude while they were preforming. Some people (not all) we're talking through it or mingling. Again, this wasn't a lot of people, but it still annoyed me 😂😂
Maybe it was the mic mix, but I hate it when I cannot hear the actual LEAD MELODY line of the song. I love this group. But all I could hear was a bad mix of harmony parts and no lead.
First time I have disliked a Pentatonix video. Like others commenting, I think the problem was mic balance. The arrangement probably would have sounded great if you could tell where the melody was through the whole song. The way it ended up sounding is just a ruined version of The Star-Spangled Banner. That's too bad, because like I said above, I'm sure the arrangement was actually amazing!
Audio person needs to be fired
Can barely hear Scott
I think Kirstin saved this performance bc the boys mics weren’t behaving properly! They all sounded beautiful tho it was just the microphones which I know wasn’t PTXs fault at all. Still a lovely performance!
All I heard was Kirstin tbh. The mic balance was horrible.
I’m pretty sure that arrangement was amazing, but again, the mic balance was the worst.
Pentatonix Sheet Music true true
Kirstin's mic was a little loud
Either that or she has a very strong voice. (I think it is the second choice)
Pentatonix Sheet Music it’s cause Kristin was belting the whole time and everyone else was in their comfort zone or lower- I bet they were all technically at the same level she was just eating it
The mic balance was horrible, you can barely Matt 😭😭😭 and my fav boy Mitch
Cutie Zalbu I WAS SO PISSED CUZ I COULD HERE SOME LOWKEY PERFECT BACKGROUND HARMONIES
IKR 😭
Fergie can't relate.
Fergie completely blew it. She tried too hard to "make it her own"
Kirstin's mic was louder than everyone else's
I think Kirstin’s time on broadway has been altering her projection, ultimately making her voice more powerful. I think that, and the horrible mic mixing *none of these things are PTX’s fault* played a part. I still loved it though, and would not be disappointed if they performed it just like this again! Love pentatonix!😊💜
Normally they will make those adjustments during a performance.. It just didnt happen this time.
Horrible mic ballance. You could hardly hear Scott or Matt.
This arrangement wasn't that different as their first time singing the national anthem.
Loved Kirstin's performance I do not understand why the rest of the guys were there
I'm a pentaholic don't hate me just the Mic balance 😔
Because its the Kentucky Derby and the invited Pentatonix... I love Kirstin big time...but she is not the group. If the Mic's had been setup correctly you would have heard everyone.

@@dehlia1221 well kirstin already did the national anthem by herself and she sounded great so yea. but the mic balance here was rly bad
I still like Kirstie singing the national anthem on her own performance
YOU ARE GREAT PENTATONIX
I don't know why people are picking this apart. I thought it was beautiful!!
It did have some beautiful moments. Pitch issues and mic problems made it under there standards.
I guess that doesn't bother me given the fact they were singing in rain, outside. For an enclosed arena it'd be below the normal standards, but outside? Nah.

Yes. I know her name is Kirstin. Started out as Kirstie. Changed it to the full Kirstin. And yes. I am a Pentaholic. Every Pentaholic I have ever known or had any interaction with has been kind, uncritical and tolerant.
C Liles Kirstin *hates* being called Kristen though.
Crafty Cat You know auto correct is a thing right? That happens to me a lot.
O.O OMG I LOVE PENTATONIX AND HORSE RACING!!!!! So beautiful!
I love PTX, but this wasn't the greatest. Could barely hear Scott, couldn't hear Matt and Kevin at all. All I heard was Mitch and Kirstin! They were way too loud! I'm sure live this sounded great but over tv was crap. When when when are they going to triple check mics!

The arrangement was amazing. Tech people really need to look at mic balance though.
ITS MY TWO FAVORITE THINGS PTX AND HORSES
A true pentaholic doesnt depend on when you became one but a true pentaholic is that you will always be with them till the end. So don't brag, friend.
Can we appreciate that Mitch is wearing loafers?
unbalanced mic volumes. And I felt awkward for Kevin doing that beatbox. He should've sang instead. Scott's seems struggling again hitting on high notes. I'm a pentaholic, I love them and I just want them to be better. I know they're better than this.

Love this group
Everyone was saying that they disrespected the National Anthem, but the audio was completely off. There was no mic balance.

See?PEOPLE REALLY RESPECT THESE REAL ANGELS SO THEY LET THEM SING THR NATIONAL ANTHEM

Wow so good
Idk what you guys are hearing or not hearing. If you wear headphones it sounds just fine. Great job guys!!!
yeah I sounded great
it
Turn Matt's mic up for Pete's sake
When I heard Grammy award I instantly remembered what Scott said in drop the mic
Hey the mic balance is wayy off again, who is surprised? (This is coming from a hardcore Pentaholic!)
Since I could really only hear Kirstin, I can say she sounded good. Hopefully they were all heard better at the location.
I also am a pentaholic and thought what a great video to watch, them singing The Nat'l Anthem. Wow...I was shocked. Read some posts, seen your thought of listening again and could barely make it to the end. I am severely disappointed.
Thank you so much!!!!
Everyone's complaining about the mics, however what about the desrespectful humans sitting and walking around.😂😂😂😂
I know right
Matt was testing out some bass notes
You could tell which attendees didn't really know the words to OUR National Anthem by the way they just flapped their lips,
they won 3 Grammys?,what dafuq how amazing
Oh wow amazing as always
Chills. Great job yall!
I like your songs I love you too you are you're beautiful
I love them, but they were completely out of balance. They need to turn Matt up.
That was amazing!
YES
This has been less than a spangled banner year for our anthem.
Sounds well balanced with headphones till the end with the Kirstin's mic sounding like it was turned up..... I could still hear the harmonies tho, sounded good
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT.THAT MIC BALANCE IS WASTING 5 TALENTS
I feel like Kirstie and Scott's mics were switched.
Great arrangement and voices...wish the derby had better equipment! ;)
Ok forgetting the tech issues, this was amazing
Amazing job you guys in sure all of you were amazing, but the mix balance was terrible, Matt was not heard at all, nor was Scott, or Mitch the only people you could hear clearly was Kirsten, and Kevin. Anyway amazing job love you guys!!

Oh, and yes big smiles to Pentatonix for always being professional!
if you're watching this with earphones take your left one out, you'll hear matt way better
We are not free but we are brave! I’m crazy for you guys!
Kristen was amazing I can't really tell about the others , I hope they do an acoustic of this
Here before milions of views
They should've made the speaker or mic of Scott louder than the rest.. it's just Kirstin I hear.. especially in the ending part and it makes Scott the accompany instead of Kirstin and Mitch lol
Chills
Who's running sound!! What a shame to miss out on the MELODY!!!
The mics were terrible!! But I am glad that you could here Kirstie.
There's only supposed to be one singer not 5 that's how it's done
i feel bad for matt, having to sing this arrangement live. the end is supposed to be this big beautiful. moment ending with a B1, but it's so out of his comfort zone he ends up being so sharp he sings a C#2
the mics weren't even on until half way thru the scotts solo lol
okay Kevin's beatboxing sounded awkward. damn those mics
Where is...i forgot his name.Cute long black hair in a.pony tail?
I hit thumbs up for pentatonix but not for those people! The people are supposed to be singing the National anthem of their country with respect and love, some even don't know where to put their hands wodering where (On their heart or on the head) trying to figure out if they will take it after those guards (salute) correct me if i'm wrong but i think it's wrong to act like that when National Anthem is playing.
Why does everyone in the crowd look so disgusted by this?
I wasn't just the mic balance (which was horrible) but also singing outside is a whole lot different. The wind carries sound and screws with it. All those excuses aside, I was not a fan of the arrangement. I don't mind a bit of tinkering and I LOVE Pentatonix, but this was just off. Give me Whitney Houston's (RIP) performance any day. A few small changes, but the melody left firmly intact.
I honestly thought this was great
They did amazingly - if the mic balance was correct, you would've heard it better
The 2023 version is much better, in my opinion.
Kirstin is the QUEEN
Get them boys some socks! Been watching too much Nick Cannon...
Awful mic balance (yet again). Why do people have to disrespect them like that? Still enjoyed tho
Everybody's worrying about the mics, but I'm worrying about how the people were being so rude while they were preforming. Some people (not all) we're talking through it or mingling. Again, this wasn't a lot of people, but it still annoyed me 😂😂
Massive Awesome! Great rendition! ✨💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻✨🎵🎤🎶✨🏇🏻👒☔️✨🍻❤️🥂

i feel bad :( the mic balance was really bad and a few of them were off key :/
Maybe it was the mic mix, but I hate it when I cannot hear the actual LEAD MELODY line of the song. I love this group. But all I could hear was a bad mix of harmony parts and no lead.
Scott was singing melody line
First time I have disliked a Pentatonix video. Like others commenting, I think the problem was mic balance. The arrangement probably would have sounded great if you could tell where the melody was through the whole song. The way it ended up sounding is just a ruined version of The Star-Spangled Banner. That's too bad, because like I said above, I'm sure the arrangement was actually amazing!
mic balanaced sucked but ayyy kirstieee
If you guys want an amazing PTX's performance of the National Anthem, it's here:

I love PTX, but that was hard to listen to. Matt sounded sharp, or flat at times. Don't change the Anthem too much.
It must be because it’s cold.
The bass guy just doesn't get down to the right note at the very end. too low for his voice
I love them usually but they butchered it like so many others have... dissapointed....
Matt is good but honestly, i miss Avi😕
Kirstin's mic...
Um what happened?
That mic balance was so off :(
