Actually shots like that were made using a polorised lens cover which is literally called “Sunset lens” Tony Scott (Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II) loved using them
Lol there’s also something to the color grading as well. The warm shift was prevalent in 80’s and early 90’s movies. I miss it, because it looks a lot better than greys and cold blues everything is graded in now.
Alan Rickman said in an interview in 2012 that the drop was more like 40ft, but that's not to play him down in any way because people have literally _died_ from falling from a shorter height than that, so kudos to him for doing that stunt because _holy shit_ it was a 40ft freefall. Alan Rickman had balls of steel. RIP man.
Another cool thing I love about the movie is that John's Beretta is a 9mm, the same caliber as most of the terrorist's weapons (except the Steyr). So it's believable that he can top off his ammo whenever he gets a chance to search bodies -- which you see him do in the film as well!
@@yoblol also, Bruce Willis’ beretta is a left hand model, and he also shouldn’t be using it because semi auto pistols weren’t authorized in his department until 93.
In addition, this movie pulled off a concept that I've never seen work anywhere near as well anywhere else: the estranged married couple that gets back together in the end. In most other movies and tv shows that attempt this, the couple is either so lovey dovey you can't believe they were ever estranged, or so hostile you can't believe they ever loved each other. Here, I believed that John and Holly had serious problems that led to their estrangement, yet despite these problems, they still loved each other. I haven't watched any other Die Hard film after the second one. In my head canon, they never got divorced because they love each other that much.
Californication? Though, I suppose the finale does still leave that open-ended, but it still very believable that Karen and Hank could come back together for good. But yeah... haven't seen that sort of thing done well very often.
Agreed with Rhiana. III wasn't as good as the original, but was pretty damn close. The others are fun action movies that just so happen to have a main character named John McClain who is a New York cop.

You could make a controlled discharge from a recently unplugged CRT monitor by disconnecting the discharge caps or just unplugging the discharge wire from the board, but you didn't hear that from me.
This movie basically the starting career for Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, props to both of the iconic hero and villain... ...and may Alan Rickman rest in peace.
When I saw Bruce Willis star in the new TWILIGHT ZONE episode "Shatterday" (based on a magnificent Harlan Ellison story), I knew he would have a great career in Hollywood, as he proved that his wise-cracking MOONLIGHTING character wouldn't be a stumbling block of typecasting. He could ACT -- even in dramatic roles. DIE HARD blew me away for being probably the smartest action film I had ever seen up till that point, with a terrific star-turn for Bruce. Having said that, it would be a gas to see somebody do a Deep Fake and superimpose Frank Sinatra's face over that of Bruce Willis, since the main character in the novel DIE HARD was based on was the same character that Sinatra portrayed in THE DETECTIVE -- in fact, the studio was obligated contractually to offer Sinatra the part and, luckily, he turned it down, and the novel's Father-Daughter dynamic was changed to a Husband-Wife one. Imagine a Sinatra Deep-Fake over Bruce here, maybe substituting "Ring-a-ding-ding, motherfucker!" for "Yippee-ky-yay, motherfucker!" . . . stuff like that.
@@johnmurcott1273 we can further nuance it by saying that he made a racist comment. He himself was not a racist but used the racial angle to achieve his goal.
Whilst he mistakes the source, Hans' interpretation of the "no more worlds left to conquer" line is the more common (and arguably more interesting from a literary perspective). It speaks of the emptiness that comes once the 'best' reach their peak, knowing they have nothing else to do, nothing else to achieve. Looking at it like that, I think it's interesting to wonder how Hans would actually feel if he had succeeded. Would he really have been happy just sitting on a beach earning 20%?
@@backwashjoe7864I know it was technically a retcon cause With A Vengeance was originally not a Die Hard script but I’ve always been curious about the brother’s’ relationship with each other.

There's a part that you forgot to win, the scene where holly asks for a sofa and bathroom brakes. I think it kinda humanizes Hans a bit, he still is a human and wants to make it easier for the pregnant lady. Love your content BTW and Merry Christmas from Finland!
@metalgearhead99 Yeah. Hans went along with Holly's requests for purely pragmatic reasons. The requests were entirely reasonable, and taking care of them could potentially prevent unnecessary problems later on. Since the plan was to herd them to the roof, keeping them relatively placated would be important.
Everything Great About Disney's Treasure Planet. That's a movie that didn't deserve to bomb. It even got an Oscar nomination for best animated film. Anyone agree/disagree?
The reason the C4 exploded when John dropped it down the elevator shaft is because det-caps (the things he sticks into the block) are shock sensitive. The reason for putting the monitor on the chair on top of the C4 was to give it more impact force when it landed on top of the elevator.

A lot, and I mean a *lot*, of what makes the original Die Hard so good is that it was based on a much darker, grittier novel about a different character entirely in a very similar (yet not quite the same) situation. The book it was based on, "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp, was actually a sequel to a much longer and more "literary" work called "The Detective," which itself was adapted into a film starring Frank Sinatra quite a long time before Die Hard was made. "Nothing Lasts Forever," by comparison, was short and rather pulpy... but interesting nonetheless, telling the story of the now-grizzled and aged Joe Leland (protagonist of "The Detective") as he, ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time with no shoes on much like John McClane would in the movie, became the one-man obstacle to Tony Gruber's terrorist mission to publicly expose Klaxon Oil's arms deals with a dictatorship in Chile and "redistribute" the contents of their vault to the people, a huge P.R. stunt for a group of radicals. Your mention of John McClane being the "antagonist" here is especially interesting because the book this movie was based on leaves the reader somewhat in uncertainty over who the true "good guy" of the conflict even was. As an amusing detail, the "gun taped to the back" trick works without a hitch for John McClane in the movie but doesn't completely work out for Joe Leland in the book. Joe's daughter (replaced by John's wife in the movie) falls to her death along with Gruber and his hand does indeed catch on her wristwatch while he drags her down. Leland isn't able to reach her in time and she even takes a shot to the abdomen from Gruber before he even drags her to the window at all. It's a little nebulous as to whether Leland's daughter deserved to die or not, as Gruber claimed she knew what the Klaxon Oil company was up to, but she dies before Leland has a chance to confront her on the issue and get her side of the story. Oh, but don't think Leland doesn't have his own special brand of marital problems, because OH BOY, Thorp gets into that can of worms in "The Detective." The upshot is that though John McClane is written as being a cool action hero, much of conflict is based on a more down-to-earth story of a much older man who had a REAL struggle to stay on top of the game, and that translates into a very, very well-rounded action movie where all of the hero's victories feel earned through hard fighting and clever resourcefulness rather than just handed to him because the director thought it would look cool... like in the later Die Hard movies.
And then this: In "Die Hard", Willis plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing. In "Sin City", Willis.... plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing.
In the book, there actually was a terrorist named Hans who was Karl’s brother. Tony Gruber was the main antagonist. There were also four women among the terrorists, it never left Joe Leland, the fight went on from 8:06 PM 12/24 - 11:33AM 12/25, and he might have actually died at the end.
@@SavageDawgJoshua jeez, now you've got me *KINDA* wanting to see @CinemaWins do "Sin City"... I know the "Brutal..." would be non-stop, but that film is just SO gorgeous.
Hard to believe, but this was Alan Rickman's first motion picture. Up to that point, he was basically an unknown and struggling stage actor with only one moderately successful play on his resume, which was turned into a movie, but his role was recast and given to John Malkovich who was more famous and a reliable box office draw.
Darren Z he was a not struggling stage actor he was a successful stage and small screen actor in his native England. He was 41 when debuted on big screen as Hans Gruber. This was Bruce Willis’ s first major action film as well as a leading man as he was on the tv show Moonlighting before that.

5:13 Fingers actually don't have muscles. All finger strength and movement come from tendons connected to the forearm muscles. Human anatomy lessons win.
So you believe there is no muscles in the pads of your finger tips, along your phalanges? Ligaments attach muscle to bone and tendons attach bone to bone at a joint. Since tendons are A vascular (no direct blood supply) without muscles your skin would have no circulation at all. Read a proper Anatomy & Physiology text book.
As they say, "Yippee ki yay" Such an iconic film! Every aspect of it was amazing, the storyline, the characters, the soundtrack, and the action were all great and literally legendary! Decided to watch it on Christmas day again, and what a film. Hard to find anything similar these days, what a time. Such an amazing cast as well, especially with Willis in his prime. So sad to see him in the condition he is now, and hearing about the passing of Gilyard, few months back. But we can all agree on this movie and their talent will always have an everlasting legacy. If you're looking for a perfect action-packed, film; This is it! Unforgettable.
My first Alan Rickman movie and followed him every since. Everybody loves Snape (I do too) but this will always be my favorite role. Thank you for doing this movie.😍😍
Still my favorite action movie of all times, from childhood to now. I love it more now because I get the deeper tones that were hiding in plain sight that I did not see as a kid. As a kid it was about the action and the one liners. As an adult, I see the pain and emotion. I hear so many people loving this just because it was a great action flick, but I love it because it is just an all around great movie on so many levels. And I agree with those who said it before me, greatest Christmas movie ever.
I watched this in theaters back when I was still a kid (10 or 11) with a friend, no adult supervision. I thought it was the bloodiest and coolest thing ever. Now, as a grown woman I can really apreciate it for the little details. It holds up so well 30 years later.
LA sunsets were beautiful in the 80's due to the large amount of smog in the air. The incredible reds, pinks, oranges, purples in almost every sunset as your lungs were burning.
My favorite thing about this movie is that there were only 35 pages of script written when they started filming. The rest of it was written during production.
A little fun fact actually, the director of this movie wanted the whole thing to sound real so he had the guns loaded with loud blanks (I'm pretty sure). And during the scene with Bruce under the table and Alan on top trying to shoot him (Again I think, can't remember too well) the shots from Bruce's gun made him either 3/4s or 2/3s deaf in his left ear. Sucks but at least it was a good movie. Edit: It was NOT Alan, it was one of the goons who made the remark, "Next time you have a chance to kill someone don't hesitate!"
lol your comment made me laugh. The poor guy, loses his hearing for the rest of his life - sucks for him but at least it was a good movie! 🤣 "How did you lose your hearing Daddy?" WHAT?!
Bunph Gaming it was terrorist Marco who was on the table and says to McClane “ Where you going pal? No more table, next time you have the chance to kill someone, don’t hesitate” John remarks” Thanks for the advice” a classic scene he later throws Marco out the window on to Sergeant Al Powells car. Bruce Willis did lose hearing in ear from the scene where shoots under table
Live free or die hard is a guilty pleasure for me. I love the buddy cop thing from the two main characters, that's what I watch it for. But yeah 1,3,2,4. 5 doesn't exist.
a good day to die hard sucked. was such a disappointment watching it in theaters that year. wasnt that the same year Olympus Has Fallen came out? i vaguely remember everyone saying that was the movie die hard should have been.
Watched this on Chirstmas Eve. One of the greatest action as well as Christmas movies of all time. An iconic, legendary, standout, and amazing film. A film filled with so many iconic sayings like "Yippee ki yay", references about other films, actors, and much more to even mention as well as say about this film. Like its not one of those Christmas movies about joy or happiness but a Christmas film, that is filled with action which is what makes it so unique. Its a film about emotion, being a hero, fighting, against all odds and etc. Like every single part of it was amazing, the story, the characters, the music, the action throughout the film; where no matter what, you were always on the edge of your seat as if you were the character, constantly experiencing his emotion, what was occurring, his humor, the action, it was like a roller coaster of emotions that is honestly better explained if you felt it as well as watched it since you were constantly cheering him on as well as worrying what was going to happen next, and him coming out as a hero, his legacy, alongside saving the day. Like every year, I always watch a Christmas movie with my twin brother, since he always recommends new Christmas films to watch together on Christmas and when he mentioned this, which is a film we've never watched before only until now, it really goes to show how amazing it was & probably his best pick & by far one if not, the greatest action film of all time as well as Christmas film of all time due to its uniqueness. Like I honestly can't believe how this film came out in 1988, and how advanced it was for its time, especially with how great it must've been in that era. It's honestly hard to find anything unique to this type of film like what a time it must've been in that era to be alive. Such an excellent cast, especially Willis who honestly never fails when it comes to these types of films especially when it was in his prime. Sad to see the condition he is in now, wishing him all the best as well as hearing about Gilyard passing away a couple of months back which honestly makes you look back to the film and see how amazing he was. Same with Willis when he was in his prime. Like the amount of people that still watch this film and mention about it, really goes to show how much of a legacy it has, and how its by far the greatest action movie of all time. Truly unforgettable, especially every scene which was just so iconic, amazing and so much to say about this film. Like its a neverending page of words. Like if you're picking out a perfect action film to watch that will always make you on the edge of your seat filled with emotion and always focused this is your film to watch. 5 stars.

"Looking forward to the death threats when I tackle that one" It's sad how right you are. Most of the complaints people have about the movie are straight nonsense, some of them make sense as there are a handful of flaws with the movie...but to make a petition to remove it from the franchise is just sad. I've seen people say it's worse than Batman vs Superman, which is even more depressing. Remember people, if a movie has one or two scenes you don't like IT'S THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND YOU SHOULD BE *SO* ANGRY
+Matthew St. Cyr *FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, SPOILERS AHEAD* Well like I stated, most of the complaints I've seen are silly. I'm not talking a few people I'm talking many thousands. It's not some fringe group there's millions of "true" Star Wars fans who hate the movie for reasons like: "The Porgs ruined the movie" Like a tiny bit of comic relief destroys the story, and as if comedy has never been part of the series before. HOW DID THEY GET THE GOGGLES ON, MY IMMERSION! "Luke died omg why didn't he have a big epic fight! I can see why people would be upset he died and stuff, but to say that it ruins the movie within the context of everything the movie is about, is just silly. It's very well explained by Luke himself that he was done and wouldn't be enough to win. "It's too long!" It was a long movie, still a shit complaint to say that ruined it. "Snoke died too fast, this movie is fucking terrible" Even though the same thing happened with The Emperor and he done even less as a villain(until his story was filled out in later movies, something that may also happen with Snoke) "Admiral Akbar died wtf!" Yes, the most important meme character died so this movie should be removed from the franchise, that's not an overreaction at all. And again like I said, there are valid complaints about the movie. Such as, that Leia scene. I thought it was a bit much. Though The Force works in mysterious ways and it would have been morbid to just kill her off like that. Personally if I had the choice of writing that scene, Kylo would have just used The Force to throw her out the room before it exploded. It was kind of dumb but hardly "ruined" the movie. The whole Casino section and the dull romance between Rose and Finn. That section was way too long and only served to show us that boy at the end and introduce DJ, should have been way shorter as it sort of derailed the tension for a while. Still didn't ruin the whole movie. And the kiss between Rose and Finn was so out of place, nothing they did was romantic. Overall it was just dumb. Plus how she saved him during his freaking epic sacrifice. How they didn't tell Poe about the plan with the transport ships. This was kinda dumb and the only point of it was to have a twist, though to be fair it did cement Holdo's authority and made her sacrifice more impactful. It could have been done much better but Poe was being a bit of a fool in the movie so why would they tell him really.
+Rory Stockley Considering a large portion of people hate the movie for explainable parts of the story, they are nonsense complaints. People expect things to come out and be exactly like they imagined or else it's terrible, which is utterly silly. Your headcanon isn't fact and in most cases probably shouldn't be. There are people who think Luke should have swooped in and destroyed the whole First Order, as if that makes any sense what so ever. As I've detailed in my comment before this, there are some legitimate complaints but _most_ of the ones I've seen are nonsense from pathetic "fans" who don't even seem to like Star Wars. Which sums up a stupidly large amount of the fanbase. No fanbase hates the object of their affection more than the Star Wars fanbase. "We hate George Lucas!" "We hate anything George Lucas made!" "But keep George Lucas away from the franchise!" "Get this director in...actually don't we all hate him!" "We want more Star Wars!" "We hate every new Star Wars thing!" Nothing ever seems to be acceptable, apologies for not being respectful of their incredibly whiny and mostly dumb complaints.
One aspect that you failed to mention was Holly's knowledge about John. Two scenes, the one where she realizes that it is John that is driving the terrorists crazy, and the scene near the end before John shoot Hans, and the other thief. That dynamic also helped to make that a great movie.

I always thought Hanz's speech about Takagi's life was a bit to show Takagi he knows all about him, getting him to reveal himself was a slight like "I'm in charge, you do what I say". He could have just grabbed Takagi and marched out but this speech was a way of controlling the situation. If not for John, Hanz had this heist set up perfectly. There's no way he didn't know Takagi by sight, and unless I missed it I don't think he was ever racist in the movie. Too suave and elegant for that.

He would have been happy until his brother showed up and started earning 20% on his $100 trillion dollars.

There's a part that you forgot to win, the scene where holly asks for a sofa and bathroom brakes. I think it kinda humanizes Hans a bit, he still is a human and wants to make it easier for the pregnant lady. Love your content BTW and Merry Christmas from Finland!
Its also a win for Holly showing that she's a badass in her own way.
Not just a badass -- she's a natural leader.

"What idiot put you in charge?"
"You did... when you killed my boss."
Definitely a win.

Ryder Draconis Nostalgia Critic likes the Princess Bride. He doesn’t usually do films he likes, with some exceptions.

Oh, but don't think Leland doesn't have his own special brand of marital problems, because OH BOY, Thorp gets into that can of worms in "The Detective."
The upshot is that though John McClane is written as being a cool action hero, much of conflict is based on a more down-to-earth story of a much older man who had a REAL struggle to stay on top of the game, and that translates into a very, very well-rounded action movie where all of the hero's victories feel earned through hard fighting and clever resourcefulness rather than just handed to him because the director thought it would look cool... like in the later Die Hard movies.
Didn't expect to see you here Lewis
And then this:
In "Die Hard", Willis plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing.
In "Sin City", Willis.... plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing.
Very well informed comment gets Christmas upvote.

Hard to believe, but this was Alan Rickman's first motion picture. Up to that point, he was basically an unknown and struggling stage actor with only one moderately successful play on his resume, which was turned into a movie, but his role was recast and given to John Malkovich who was more famous and a reliable box office draw.
Darren Z at his age it was late
Darren Z he was a not struggling stage actor he was a successful stage and small screen actor in his native England. He was 41 when debuted on big screen as Hans Gruber. This was Bruce Willis’ s first major action film as well as a leading man as he was on the tv show Moonlighting before that.

You nailed it! I have always loved Die Hard. The scene where he talks about his wife always gets me, too. A true classic!
Dude, I would love to see you tackle the Stephen Summers movies, in the future.
The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing...
“Carl rejects your offer to smile” coupled with the movie’s musical sting got me to my core.
The one on the table was Marco
lol your comment made me laugh. The poor guy, loses his hearing for the rest of his life - sucks for him but at least it was a good movie! 🤣
"How did you lose your hearing Daddy?"
WHAT?!
It was the smoking hot Italian guy, kind of funny how nasty he was to the half naked woman when ordinarily he would have jumped her himself.

Thanks for the great Christmas treat. And happy holidays for you and your family!
5 stars.

It's sad how right you are.
Most of the complaints people have about the movie are straight nonsense, some of them make sense as there are a handful of flaws with the movie...but to make a petition to remove it from the franchise is just sad.
I've seen people say it's worse than Batman vs Superman, which is even more depressing.
Remember people, if a movie has one or two scenes you don't like IT'S THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND YOU SHOULD BE *SO* ANGRY
mrcheesemunch What film is it?
The Last Jedi. Wasn't a huge fan of it, but yeah Star Wars fans are crazy.

+Matthew St. Cyr
*FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, SPOILERS AHEAD*
Well like I stated, most of the complaints I've seen are silly. I'm not talking a few people I'm talking many thousands.
It's not some fringe group there's millions of "true" Star Wars fans who hate the movie for reasons like:
"The Porgs ruined the movie"
Like a tiny bit of comic relief destroys the story, and as if comedy has never been part of the series before.
"It's too long!"
It was a long movie, still a shit complaint to say that ruined it.
"Snoke died too fast, this movie is fucking terrible"
Even though the same thing happened with The Emperor and he done even less as a villain(until his story was filled out in later movies, something that may also happen with Snoke)
"Admiral Akbar died wtf!"
Yes, the most important meme character died so this movie should be removed from the franchise, that's not an overreaction at all.
"We hate George Lucas!"
"We hate anything George Lucas made!"
"But keep George Lucas away from the franchise!"
"Get this director in...actually don't we all hate him!"
"We want more Star Wars!"
"We hate every new Star Wars thing!"
Nothing ever seems to be acceptable, apologies for not being respectful of their incredibly whiny and mostly dumb complaints.
One aspect that you failed to mention was Holly's knowledge about John. Two scenes, the one where she realizes that it is John that is driving the terrorists crazy, and the scene near the end before John shoot Hans, and the other thief. That dynamic also helped to make that a great movie.
10:16 "Let's be honest, Urkle had it coming..." 😂🤣😁🤣 LMAO!
"Thanks for the advice!"
I think Bruce actually blew out his eardrum shooting the pistol that close to his own head in that scene. Not sure where I heard that or if it's true but there it is.

What’s not great about Die Hard, it’s one of the best and most heartwarming Christmas Movies
It's my own Christmas tradition to watch Die Hard, merry Christmas to you too!
The best Christmas movie ever!!!
I wrote that comment then scrolled and all the comments were the exact same =)
I fell hard for that. Genius. I love you.
I just recently found this channel and am so happy I have. I love "everything wrong" but it is so good to hear someone going on about all the good parts of my favorite movies instead of destroying them. lmao
Yipee Kai Yay and happy new year!
Thank you for giving Hans and his villains some good reputation on here. Hans is my favorite character and its so nice to see some respect.
If anyone reading this i hope you have a great Christmas eve.
Constructive Historian thank you
Excellent analysis/dissection! Die Hard is genuinely a modern (80s) classic! So many little details and insights in script and production/direction fitting together like a wonderful jigsaw puzzle to produce a lovely picture.
The “welcome to the party” line was to the cop for needing a body to drop on his car to fully believe something is wrong
Man I really like the 4th one. How surprising was Justin Long? Even though I hate Timmy O as a villain.. too much Justified
the 4th one is actually my 2nd favorite Die Hard next to the original.
I think you're both mistaken. Only three Die Hard movies were ever made.
Lol "Timmy O" haha
@ Kate Lattey - Well he had to match with Maggie Q ;)
Have watched this movie ever Christmas Eve 7 years running now since I was 11 years old. Love it ever time. I’ll be back to comment on this master piece of a video next year. And this movie! Still a great Christmas movie!
Happy holidays and Christmas to any who read please know you are loved!
Speaking of Rickman honing his chops on villainous roles, how about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? With a score so majestic Disney stole it for their home video line.
