    These awesome pilots get that huge jet at 40000 feet safely on the ground in Heathrow and make it look no more difficult than my drive from home to the local supermarket.....incredible. Great attitude by these 2 professionals and a great airline to go with it.

    Did not hear the autopilot disconnect. This is a full auto land all the way to touchdown. Lack of movement of sidestick on short final by pilot flying confirms this. I would have loved to see the aeroplane hand flown from at least 1500 ft AGL. I wonder if this is standard practice at Malaysian Airlines. Auto land should only be used in IMC for a CATII or CATIII ILS approach in low visibility and/or low cloud base conditions and certainly not in clear daylight VFR conditions with light winds. Using the auto land too frequently leads to erosion of actual flying skills.
    There is a Lufthansa RUclips video series for a MD11 freighter where the pilot flying is the very young first officer who disconnects the auto pilot a full half an hour before landing at about flight level 140 and hand flies the aeroplane all the way through vectored approach to touchdown (speed managed). This is real skill and a young bloke relishing the challenge.
    I just feel that complacency creeps in due to an unbalanced reliance on the high level of automation available in modern day, new gen airliners.
    Just like some airlines mandate, I hope Malaysian Airlines makes it compulsory for pilots flying to disconnect the auto pilot and hand fly the aeroplane to touchdown.

    • @cruxader27
      @cruxader27 5 лет назад +5

      Believe me, autoland function is rarely used. You can use autoland in VMC or IMC. Some pilots use autoland just to check if the system is still functioning normally after many manual landings being made.

      There is nothing wrong with doing an Autoland in VMC conditions, all flight crews do that regularly as training.
      But there is one - really really important thing - that bothers me about they way the crew did this. At NO POINT I heard them announcing doing an Autoland into Heathrow to ATC...
      This can be verrrrry dangerous and it should be announced to the approach controller or earlier so that the tower controller at the destination airport can let possible departing traffic hold at the CAT II / III holding points instead of the CAT I to ensure correct ILS signals for the aircraft performing the Autoland.
      What can happen is case like that, although not caused my traffic on ground but by traffic that took off shortly before (and was not seperated within CAT III minimas)-> just google "Singapore Munich runway excursion" and click the AvHerad article.
