The palm harmonics technique looks like something that was discovered by accident. Probably when doing some tapping on high gain and the palm brushed the string while working up the neck. Very cool!!
For the "rolling harmonic" technique, You can use the pick (without picking thé string) instead of your palm to create harmonics. It's what Joe Satriani does on the song "Hordes of locusts" from his 1st album "Not of this earth" (1986). You can also see him doing it in the documentary "The Satch Tapes" (1992).
EVH and Gary Moore (in his metalish phase) used to use similar techniques, but they'd usually do open string pull-offs while moving their pick hand up and down the string. EVH on "Somebody Get Me A Doctor", Moore used to do it on live versions of "Nuclear Attack".
Gary Moore is the pioneer of speed picking and noisey sounds! I just ordered the Remastered "Corridors of Power" Ozzy " Speak of the Devil" sounds amazing Remastered
@@svtrader ok elaborate, what does,"No." mean? Coliseum 2 was innovative for the time. Not too many players had the chops Gary Moore did in the early 70s He and John Sykes were some of the first. @@johnmcminn9455 You answered your on question. Moore didn't pioneer anything, nor did he popularize anything, either. He took what he heard and incorporated it in his songs. Not exactly a break thru.
What a cool video! I just wanted to note that the reason you get all the cool harmonics around the neck pickup, is because you are hitting the natural harmonics when you are over the "implied" 24th fret. Good ol' fashioned string theory, baby! 😎
I play with a thumb pick, and it can be difficult to produce pinch harmonics with it sometimes. So, I came up with a alternative way about a year ago. I pick the note normally, and touch the string at the same time with my baby finger. Moving my hand up and down the string while picking and sliding the tip of my baby finger along the string producers a clear harmonic whenever the baby finger is at a node. Same idea as shown in the video. I mentioned it on a comment somewhere, perhaps on your channel. 😎
First time I heard this technique, was actually from Iron Maiden's Killers (from the Killers album), 1 minute in the song (after the intro). It was one of the first "tricks" I learned on the electric guitar back when I was 14 years old and it was because of that song...
I had this one in my toolbox since I was 18. But it has been so long that I had forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me. Enjoy your vids. Keep em kranking!
SOME things are just 'cool because they're cool'. This IS one of those things. SOME people are, as well. And Max fits that category. Rock on, brother!🤘
Thanks for the great new harmonics I can experiment with. In response to you wanting to know if we knew about them, I didn't know about them till now. (I may have to take a closer look at them, too...Please forgive the attempt at levity. Obviously I enjoyed your version of "taking a closer look" in the intro.) Thank you, Max!! Please keep the great, informative videos coming!!!
Thank you for the help on the rolling harmonics. I first saw it on the solo of “oblivious” by a local band called “universe effects” and always wanted to learn it
That’s awesome. My cover band got to open for Gus and Rob Rock at a place called the looney bin in Bradley Illinois. We ended the night with me joining them to sing crazy train. Something I will never forget
I got into practicing something similar to this a few months ago, but laying my thumb across the string & then fingerpicking behind that. Gus literally nailed what I originally heard in my head & was trying to do, tho, lol
Thanks for sharing 👍. Never heard of that technique. I'm a huge harmonic fan. Some of my friends calm me little zakk lol. That's awesome can't wait to try it \m/. Thanks again for sharing!
lol love your honesty Brother Max. I also did not know about the butt of the palm mobile pinch harmonix? whatever it is im heading into the guitar room to give it a go! Great Video and thanks ass always. Rock On
Good eye on that video! My old guitar instructor actually used to do all of his punch harmonics this way, so it works with fretted notes as well. He would angle his hand weird so he could get his palm in the right position to do the harmonic. I first started learning artificial harmonics that way before learning it the normal way from a guitar magazine. The rolling harmonic thing you did at the end is very EVH. All in all, another great video! 🤘
I have been doing the palm mute style harmonics for years. I haven't used it like Gus does for multiple notes. It is a great alternative to pinch harmonics when on smaller strings which pinch harmonics tend to be trickier on.
Fantastic video, very informative, even though I don't even play guitar I thoroughly enjoyed this and appreciate the skill and dedication to the craft. You have great hair and your shirt is awesome. Mixing retro with current culture, genius.
Straight up I first saw a guy doing palm harmonics like that in a guitar shop in Dublin Ireland in the late 80s and I doubt he invented it so it must have been done by a pro guitarist before then I reckon. It sounds great - as all distorted harmonics do! I always particularly loved Vivian Campbell's pinch and scrape harmonics on the first three Dio albums. Thanks, another great video Max. 😎
I think I sometime saw some guy do that a while back, but I think it was merely an accident! The guy looked quite puzzled for a second, but since he was in the middle of a song I guess he just shook it off and continued. The one technique I was aware of was what someone called "self-flanger". It's kind of like the inverse of this one because you keep your picking hand in place and while you pick on one string you hover the fingertips of your fretting hand up and down on the same string, just barely touching it. That one I've seen many times used by many guys, so when I saw the beginning of the video I kind of figured it was a similar thing, but it's always super cool having a bunch of different harmonic techniques up your sleeve to add some spice and flash to your playing!
I like the fact you’re sitting on your couch eating popcorn with your guitar next to you instead of your wife lol also Gus G work with Ozzie is very underrated
I'll definitely be using this technique in my thrash metal/reggae/5 piece harmony/drill fusion bands gig at the local old folks home tonight... Ta Max.

Love it, Gus has been a favorite of mine since the pre OG Fire wind album Nocturnal Symphony. Also, great lesson, you have my thanks. I think I heard EVH and Zakk do something like that but I could never figure it out.
GuitarMAX, great vid, killer tone.. I've always been great at artificial and natural harmonics, and I've dabbled with this but I learned even more when this.. The rolling harmonics is cool, so thanks.. FYI, love that shirt 😎.. Thanks dude
You can use your fretting hand and do the same thing on any string moving your hand up and down the fret board or string to string , just pic like normal and lay your fretting hand lightly on the string and move around
Cool technique, didn't know that! And BTW - obviously we're pretty similar in terms of Shirts (BTTF!, picks (seems like a Jazz III Maxgrip) and of course the love for the guitar work of Gus ☺️ Instant sub! (Y)
Cool vid. Tried it out. Works. I also tried using my knuckle closest to my fingertip on my middle finger instead of my palm or side of my hand. Works pretty good also..........
messing with gain structures over years, I`ve gotten mostly unintentional results with harmonics. harnessed some of it. early one was trilling with left, muted right thumb up or down neck. I dug it cause it caused conniption fits with the 7,9,11 and 13th chord preaching choir teacher/guitar pratt.
I use to do this about 18 years ago occasionally when we were jamming. If its the same method, Id pinch up close on the pic & pic up & down tight on the string because it gives a slight diffrent sound as you move along.
Dude I was front row at the ATL show and it was crazy. I’ve never gotten into Firewind but Gus blew my mind. Also, the first time I heard this technique was on a song called Desolate Motion - the Rocksmith players know what’s up
It’s interesting that you haven’t seen this before , I saw Eddie Van Halen do this in concert once , as a guitarist Me and my friends who went to the show ( all of us are guitar players ) we witnessed this too and we were blown away by this too . Eddie would do this at the end of I think Mean Street and then he would legato back to the riff very cool
Yes, being a guitarist myself, I was also blown away when I saw EVH do these harmonics live in concert back in the 1980's. A friend of mine used to tell me it was a studio trick when we first heard Mean Street record and I assured him it was Eddie without any effect until we saw him in concert. I don't really know if it was Eddie who discovered it, but this technique has been used by many local and famous metal guitarist ever since that time. Eddie was truly an artist and a guitar genius in his own way.
The technique is probably from Mick Mars of motley crue, on the song ,,Take Me To The Top" you can hear a really similar sounding technique being used. Its a fairly easy technique but pretty effective if you do it just right, altough this version sounds/plays more like a mix between the mick mars technique and pinch harmonics. Anyways great video Max, keep it up and thank you for the tricks =)
