Thank you Gus for your time and sharing this video. It’s awesome to have such talented humans such as yourself that are willing to share their blessings and talents in teaching others.
Really cool! Gus G's scale runs sound very clear, I dig that so much. Could you please show some of your tapping licks? And the solo from We Defy, that would be amazing! Thanks!
Great lesson as usual! I just soak every single word. Why am I so old to become a better musician and try to follow the dream with your briliant lessons which inspire me not to let the dust settle on my Jackson SL... \m/
you practice and practice and practice and think hmm I'm starting to get pretty good then you watch Gus for 5 minutes lol. Back to the drawing board!!! honestly tho it's inspiring to see how good you could get!!

Great Lesson Gus, could you upload more exercises on alternate picking? and some sweepicking i'm trying to work that! Thanks you are the best! Greetings from Argentina
Excellent explanation of how these two techniques work. I'd like to see you teach people some different sweep licks...some that use 6 strings and others that use less. For me, 3-string sweeps are easy. 4-string sweeps are pretty doable. 5 and 6 become strangely more difficult. Maybe you can show me (us) some tips for cleaning up the 5 and 6 string sweeps.
Love tutorial vids like these, please keep 'em coming! Got any more staple practice licks that sound awesome in most applications while improvising/soloing?
When I've started playing guitar (15 years ago), I went the economy picking rout. But after 10 years of practice I didn't get any better or faster. It hast to click, if you understand what I'm trying to say. The problem was, that at a faster tempo I was thrown off when I had to change strings. Also If you don't mute the strings properly they will ring out. All these problems went away when I switched to alternate picking.
To me economy picking comes naturally and I can play at a faster tempo when I use economy/directional picking instead of alterate picking. Alternate picking has more attack and aggression though.
I just can´t find a thing that motivates me to learn alternate picking. My economy picking works. And the onlyst song where i needed alternate picking until now was fade to black, the clean part by Hammett, after the first solo... And that´s so slow that you don´t need to practice it a lot. Is here anybody who can give me a cool example for a song where you definitly have to use alternate picking instead of economy for a good reason??
Brilliant, thank you. Can I ask, what picks do you use? I've seen a lot of fast players using jazz III picks. Still, some use standard ones. What's your preference?
I've always used economy picking since it's the most natural way for me as a fast player. However when I encounter something like 5 notes over 2 strings that is meant to be played with alternate picking strictly I get totally lost. Some stuff I just can't play even though I played guitar every day the last 20 years. I'm a lazy player when it comes to specific rules I know. But now I have a really hard time learning to play stuff it's meant to be played. Here's one example. The top gun anthem. The part between 3:01 to 3:06 I simply cant play. ruclips.net/video/KIq5x8-QL-o/видео.html Any suggestions on specific exercises to start handling strictly alternate picking between strings where the first time on one string you start with an upstroke and the second time moving to that string starting with a downstroke and vice verse?
There is Steve Vai solution to this ... play it twice, so you have 10 notes over 2 strings, so it is even number and your alternate picking world is saved :D
I use directional picking i.e. sweep picking combined with alternate picking i.e. when changing string if you are going down you down pick and when you are coming up you up pick and then you alternate pick on that particular string

I really wouldn't say Gus plays particularly fast, or particularly clean. For that I'd listen to someone like Rick Graham or Anton Oparin. Gus is moderate speed at best.
If you switch from alternate picking to economy picking when alternate picking and economy picking are no longer the same, why call it alternate picking? Alternate picking means picking up when you go down a string and picking down when you go up a string. So that means first jumping over the string, then hitting it from the opposite end. It costs you an additional motion. I have never heard a convincing argument why avoiding hitting the string you want to pick by jumping over it, then hitting it from the opposite direction has an advantage.
Couldn’t agree more about putting in the work!! Great video Gus!!

when I'm very warmed up I just do economy picking naturally it just happens when it's necessary. not really a conscious decision.
Do you do economy picking on up strokes as well?
Lucas Baião Pires not really, unless it’s a specific part that requires it
@@firetv Is it because you do not like it, or because you think it actually damages the playing?
Lucas Baião Pires I haven’t found much use for it, it definitely doesn’t “damage” anything ;)

Your picking technique is really interesting. You're basically just movijg your fingers and the wrist only slightly.

Damn Gus, I'd love to buy your signature guitar... But I'd get lost easily without those fret markers
Ken T haha that’s just the custom shop version. Was weird for me as well in the beginning. The JS & X series have the classic Jackson inlays
I'm sure there's side markers on the neck.
I'm a linguistics nerd and for some reason I thought he'd have a very thick european accent (kinda like Malmsteen's) and I'm surprised right now.
