***** lol, i agree. This method isn't that hard, and can be done relatively easy with the mentioned steps and some training... That being said, computers are extremely efficient at solving these kind of problems, so there is no point in learning the mechanics of solving them if they're larger than 3x3
There are two other methods: Gauss-Jordan elimination and Montante's method check them out here (they are there along with the video method): matrixcalc.org/en/#%7B%7B1,2,3%7D,%7B0,1,5%7D,%7B5,6,0%7D%7D%5E%28-1%29 I watched the video because In was told that the method would be quiet fast for triangular matrices with many zeros (the nice thing about triangular matrices is that their determinate is simply the product of their diagonal (and you can transform a matrix into an equivalent triangular matrix using Gauss)) in the none zero part (like: (1 0 0 2) (0 1 0 0) (0 0 1 7) (0 0 0 1) but I don't see it yet.)

You are a lifesaver. Its almost as if college finite teachers teach this in the most complicated way possible for no reason. always trying to make us use the damn identity matrix like nah fam yall tweakin. Thank You again
Wow, you're video is quite the one... I can't believe I learnt over 5 periods in school to finally be able to find the inverse of a matrix (and still couldn't do it better) and you just did it in less than 15 minutes.... Thank you thousand times...
This guy deserves my Professor's pay check every month for 60 years. This is the best way to teach students but some Professors take delight in failing students so they don't even care teaching it wrong. I love this video.
You’re not alone…I HATE using row operations, because I can never get the numbers to give me the identity matrix. I get it right in one place and it screws up somewhere else. This method always works without any of that nonsense, even if it takes longer. The Gauss Jordan process is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine if you’re doing this by hand.
Many thanks from Germany! Searched for a proper video which explains the whole process and in every video I watched anything missed, so I always had sign mistakes or wrong numbers.
This method is completely unintuitive, but it works and that's all that matters. You explain every step. There are no arithmetic or logical leaps made and therefore there's no ambiguity or need for question. Your videos are literally perfect. You make patrickJMT look like garbage as he skips steps and I'm forced to do arithmetic on my own as if it's trivial. Well if it's so trivial then just do it. You do it! Thank you very much for being thorough and exhaustive. As far as I'm concerned, this is the only video on this topic.
I dont get the part where you just multiply with "+" and "-" to the solved det from N is it always starting with a plus and then just + - + - + - ? also for a 4by4 matrix?
+ - + - - + - + + - + - - + - + That’s the configuration for a 4x4. It alternates signs between entries in the row, but the initial entries in the rows also alternate signs going down the columns.
I found this very helpful, trying to self teach myself this material for a transfer exam to change courses and the book just jumped straight into asking questions without even giving a formula.
I do the same to find the inverse, but it gets really confusing if I use the determinant. Row ops and Gaussian Elimin. aren't that bad, as long as I don't make arithmetic errors.
man... the way u calculated the determinant was amazing ... thank u sooooo much .. i had already studied matrices in my previous semester but i had to recall it and i referred to ur video and it blew my mind.... keep on making such videos with ur own techniques.. thanks a lot buddy
Perfect. I needed a brief review. Engineering courses use linear algebra and all the good stuff with variables, so it usually is a little more pencil being pushed down. And tears, don't forget the tears...
Thanks bro I love these steps they are fast and straight to the point, sure the computer gives the answer instantly because all these steps were incorporated into it by someone who knew them.
In engineering, we actually use this to solve multiple dynamics equations simultaneously, so we can determine how all the different parts of a mechanism will move- like all the positions and max/min angles of all the parts in an engine for example. I had to refresh my memory of how to do this lol, that's what brought me here.
It's easier than it looks. All he did was: 1) find the determinant, 2) calculate minors (or a bunch of individual 2 by 2 determinants) corresponding to the junction of the crossed out row and column to that single entry (a junction is a point where those two lines you'd use to cross either rows or columns meet), 3) transpose that matrix, 4) divide every number in that matrix by the determinant of the matrix you want to take the inverse of.
Lol if people are learning matrices on youtube, I'm pretty sure they know they can skip parts of the video, you don't need to waste time explaining how to explain better
Iohan Kellerman You'll have to write a 4x4 matrix of which all diagonal entries from left above to right under are 1 and the non-diagonal 0. Place this matrix next to the 4x4 you want to know the inverse of. Then row reduce this new 4x8 matrix so that the left 4 columns look like the matrix you wrote next to your original matrix (with the 1's and 0's). If you've done this correctly, you'll see the inverse of your matrix in the right 4 columns of the 4x8 matrix. I think this works for every matrix that is invertible. You can try it out on the 3x3 in this clip to see if you understand.
I'm really annoyed by a few things in this video. First, at 2:25, you said you were going to subtract the red numbers from the green numbers, when you clearly did it the other way around. Second, at roughly 12:00, you have two different matrices that you're calling N. Third, N itself is a matrix, so when you write [N] you are saying the matrix consisting of the matrix N, which is also wrong.
thank u so much.....i was very confused to do the inverse of matrix before watching this video. you explained it in an efficient way any body can understand easily. Excellent !!!!!
I have never learned this while I was studying my 2 Year degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, the electronic math instructor just taught us the CRAMERS Rule for Solving 3 unknowns. I had no IDEA of a MATRIX INVERSE and WHY or Where it is used for. I like the detail the procedure step by step How this INVERSE MATRIX can be done. Now I think I'm going to 'write a Computer program' as an exercise in Python... just have something to do as a RETIRED engineering technician... LOL!!!!...
Marcellin Mutuyimana has got the right idea. Using Gaussian elimination and putting an identity matrix next to your original matrix will yield the inverse.
you don't know to what extent you've helped me with your video ;-))) that was so awesome. what I couldn't keep in my mind for more than 3 years, easily stuck in my mind . thanks so much for your great video
10:48 I think it's easier to just say that the rows becomes the columns (first row becomes the first column, second row becomes the second column etc), perhaps it makes it easier to grasp what we're doing (at least it was for me).

Actually, in my case its much easier. in our case, we used to do rref in finding the inverse. and its damn long, especially for 3x3 s.
this is quite easy and not complicated. But there's a decent amount of shit to remember.

What if the determinant turns out to be a negative number?

what if this was a 4x4 matrix? Would I have to draw 4 diagonal lines?
