Hey Jason. Glad you stuck around with the game. You've really bridged two very different generations. I am older now with a kid and i'm married but theirs something about smash that brings me back to those days fresh out of high school playing smash in 03 that nothing else gives me. You seem like a great person and i'm glad that you seem to be a lot happier now. Cheers homie.
As someone who is confirmed to have Aspergers and plays competitive smash, Mew2King's one of my biggest inspirations as this guy with Aspergers, OCD and depressive states who started as a nobody and became one of the best players in the world. M2K, in the unlikely chance you're reading this, You're one of my heroes man. Thanks for being fucking amazing.
12:02 "This is gonna be the death of Melee" -Prog *Starts playing Brawl* 13:01 "It was so, so slow, not what we expected at all" -Prog 13:29: "Everything that made Melee great, the combo system with hitstun, the various movement options, it had all been lost in translation" -Prog If there's one thing I don't understand about Sakurai, it's that he consider's Smash Bros a party game, even though it's clearly not. Then he says that Melee is too hard to learn. How is a "party" game too hard to learn? I don't even know if he knows what the genre of Smash Bros is. That's not the point I'm trying to make though. Anyone can learn how to play Melee competitively, nothing is hard, once you learn how do it. I'll also never understand how Sakurai could go backwards in terms of speed, combo's, advanced tech's, offensive play style, fall speed, fluidity, etc. I guess when he said he really wanted everyone to win, he truly meant it.
What's so great about Melee is that it's just as easy to pick up and play as Brawl but it also has all the technical depth to make for an incredible competitive experience. I was playing Melee for years without even knowing that it had a competitive side. I just thought it was a fun game to play with friends. When I did eventually find out about the competitive side, it felt like I had discovered a whole new game. I can now play Melee for hours without getting bored because I'm constantly trying to exploit the mechanics to create new combos. Brawl on the other hand, takes all that away and I get sick of it after a few matches.
***** Yeh it is out thinking your opponent but the sad thing is that smash 4 punishes you for playing aggressively. The shield and spot dodge are too powerful to the point where when someone is good enough, you cant play aggressive. You have to spam and play campy, its still out thinking your opponent but on a much smaller scale with a much much smaller skill cap.
***** Grab beats shield, spot dodge beats grab = punish. Grabs can be easily spot dodged and it happens quite often. This fatality guy isn't popping up in any youtube searches, a link to him would be appreciated. Moreover, diddy kongs dominance shows how punishable aggressive play really is. Especially with his banana camping and grab game. You never see any combos lasting longer than 2 to 3 hits bcuz the defensive/offensive options don't allow for them.
M2K: We can play anywhere. Armada: Yeah, but against who? M2K: That's a good point. Hahahaha, these guys are awesome. Would love to hang around with them if I ever had the opportunity.
While I personally liked it, Brawl's quality and perception was ATROCIOUS. If Smash 4 is decent, it could at least take a chunk of Melee's audience, and a decent percentage of people might not go back, similar to when Brawl came out, and Melee luckily survived. The Marvel, Soul Calibur and Halo communities have similar things happen. I definitely don't want a decent (assuming that's what it is) game to kill/hurt Melee, but unfortunately, I have a feeling it could happen...
I followed Halo when it was on MLG around 08 and onwards from there. M2K was the guy I saw winning all of the smash events. I always thought he was a weirdo, so it was great to see him contextualized in this part of the documentary. Now I understand him and I'm happy for him.
Really enjoy this doc...for some reason it's leaving me with a sense of hope and joy after each episode. Great music selection and editing and all around terrific production.
The segment starting at 8:51 with the Megaman music over it is my absolute favorite part of the whole series. The music was chosen so perfectly for M2K's character and approach to the game. And plus, it was playing over smash elites praising him and footage of him actually being the best. Seriously 10 out of 10, you guys.
I have watched this whole series two times through, and I'm telling everyone 100% guarantee that what M2K says in between 21:26 - 22:03 is the most real thing you will hear anyone say in this series. Period. That man opened up the depression that he has and explained it in such a beautiful way.
I love Wife's wisdom in this video. "Because he was good at the game, not because he played it, but because he was good at it." So true in many facets of life. You get respect and admiration by being good at what you do. You can get it also by being a nice person and being likeable too, but you're almost guaranteed to get it by being good.
M2K seems like he's in a much better mind set. People cheer for him, get the hype going. He has friends in Zero and Sky. He can even make come backs now! I hope he takes Apex this year!
***** I think he is planning on it, apparently he has insurance now. Even if his hands weren't having too much of a physical impact on his play, they were almost definitely having a bad effect on him netally, so I'm really hoping him seeing a doctor manages to put him in a healthier mindset
Mew2King will always be the best character in melee, he found out the aspects of data, the pieces that make the characters what they are, and where and why they belong in the tier list. And how each character can be optimal and viable. He found out what makes the tier list, he knows how to make almost all characters decent at gameplay. He teaches even nowadays about percentages and combos and moves. Almost everything about melee. Being the best player doesn't mean he's ranked 1 in smash boards, or winning first all the time. Besides this is also a good time period for him to be as optimal as before because no one nowadays can "do something random or weird that doesn't make sense to throw off mew2king" in the end Mew2king deserves the title of being the best player of all time because this video explains it.
+Eric Pivaral I met Hbox at a local tournament about a week ago, and he was telling a story about M2k, so that means m2k and I are basically best friends now.
one of the best episodes of the documentary. all this parts 8:518:549:019:04 insert the rest of the video to 10:5610:59 is *GODLIKE* how M2K proved all of them wrong is truly inspirational.
I love Ken. When other people is like: I don't think my opponent got enough sleep or was focused or something. He on the other hand is like: I beat the shit out of him, and he was a scrub
the way that you portrayed the beginning of brawl, near-death of melee, and revival of melee (on top of me knowing how far the melee community has gone nowadays) literally made me cry tears of happiness i love you, samox
I've watched the entire documentary multiple times on my own and shown it to friends and watched it with them. This is the best episode out of all of them by far.
the first tourney i went to M2K feinted a Falcon Punch at my brother never met him before, and the most epic stare down happened. It was the most awkward but greatest thing i ever saw
Congrats on Big House man. Also, I was extremely close to going to the Houston tournament you recently went to JUST to meet you and shake your hand. By far my favorite player who, even though you're extremely good, I believe you have a lot more potential that's untapped. Keep up the good work, and never get discouraged if you're not doing so hot. M2k FTW
Except Smash 4 games are what, 2-3 minutes faster on average than Brawl and is far more balanced? Just because it isn't Melee doesn't mean it's Brawl. Possibly hard for you to understand, but it isn't the same.
After seeing m2ks story I know have so much more respect for him. Before this he just seemed like a regular smasher but after seeing this he definitely is higher in my list of favorite smashers
Drew Deeds no i mean like literally not as an insult, on his profile or whatever a couple years back, he said he was autistic why is it so hard to believe that people w/ autism can function in society like lmao
Excellent documentary. It skilfully weaves an organised, comprehensive chronicle of the community's development into the inspiring story of the colourful and vibrant human experiences within it. I love how all top smashers were introduced; their motivations, personalities, quirks and of course their interrelationships were fascinating to observe (props to Wife's insights and explanations). It was all captivating and intriguing to follow, and I can only imagine the passion put into making this.
This episode, or to be more specific, the M2K becomes number 1 scene is what made me take Smash to a competitive level. This documentary did me and my friends wonders. Thanks Travis!
Sorry, you're kind of out of luck if you like Melee. But even thought I hate Brawl, I can't criticize it or say that it failed, because in reality it didn't. It had more sales; the business aspect. And it, too, has a huge competitive community, that's almost as big as the Melee counterpart.
I have a feeling that Smash 4 is gonna be better than Brawl but it's still not gonna be as good/technical as Melee. The physics and techniques and combos in smash 4 (from what I've seen) is definitely a step up from Brawl but it's no where near as good as Melee. As comparing Smash 4 to Project M, I have no idea whether it's better or worse
I personally think that Smash 4 will definitely be better than Brawl. Don't get me wrong, there's no way it will replace Melee, though. However, Smash 4 does have some unique gameplay traits that make it pretty interesting to watch. I have a feeling it will gain a smaller, yet loyal, tournament scene kinda like Smash 64.
When I'm old enough to go on my own, I really want to get into smash tournaments, but I'm barely better than the average casual at the moment. I need to practice a lot.
It feels like there's an episode missing from this or something... about half way through the episode it mentions EVO 2007, and how Ken's coming out of retirement, and Mew2king is practicing to beat him, then it starts talking about mango and ends on a downhearted note about Mew2king's depression or whatever, then the next episode is all about Mango and doesn't mention evo2007 at all, then the final episode is about evo2013.
Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can’t get it wrong - Mew2King (He didn’t say that but this quote applies to him)
When the game is thought to be dead and yet the generations come together at RoM is one of my favorite parts. That beat, the player headcount, Match 4 and the feeling of hope, a good moment for our hero, hype and awe.
I'm here after his video with the current allegations to many many of the smashers, Mew2king might just cemented himself even more as the true 🐐 of Smash
After watching this video, I realize that this is why Mew2King plays Marth: Marth is precise. You have to have excellent spacing to make sure Marth gets the tipper damage. Once you get grabbed by Marth, you have to be precise to get the chain grab combo. Marth combined with Mew2King's precision is incredible.
yeah brawl is really poorly made when it comes to competitive play, but if you look at it in a different light it's still pretty awesome. You have a bigger character roster, more stages, customizable stages, and the kickass subspace emissonary. And without brawl project m wouldn't exist so you have to give it credit for that.
mrzombiesbo Tbh, the only thing that made the subspace emissary amazing were the cutscenes. And guess what? Sakurai decided not to make them for Smash 4 because "someone uploaded it to RUclips" -_-
Anakin Saephanh You're fucking stupid. Not everyone has to click on the cutscenes. I sure as hell don't want to turn on my Wii just to watch cutscenes from Brawl, so I'm just going to watch it on RUclips. Cutscenes don't spoil shit if you don't have the game or already completed it, lmao. You should reread your comment before you post because stupidity is written all over it.
Fieryvortex48 k. Considering that I'm stupid as hell, my existence proves the stupidity of others over clicking on unwanted spoilers, or am I making stupid claims? I still don't get why you have to insult me either when trying to reason with you about another's point.
"I like proof that a nobody can become number one." I love this quote sooooooooooooooooo much. My most inspirational Smasher, also giving some inspirational advice, this guy is by far the most inspirational person there's ever been to me, not just as a Smasher, but as a person too.

The Megaman theme during M2K's Melee montage is so fitting.
I literally just said this out loud
"Megaman theme...Blue bomber...SUPER FIGHTING ROBO-....OH SHIT"
LauKungPow how did I not get this before?
Tarmon2121 He actually used to speedrun megaman 2 before he started playing smash
Tarmon2121 Have you any idea where it can be found?
Tarmon2121 Yeah I would like to know as well where he got the specific song from, it's great!

Wow. I drew that picture of the Marth vs. Cpt.Falcon at 19:36. I posted it on 4chan about 5 or 6 years ago....

M2K is the reason Smash is still a game.

about half way through the episode it mentions EVO 2007, and how Ken's coming out of retirement, and Mew2king is practicing to beat him, then it starts talking about mango and ends on a downhearted note about Mew2king's depression or whatever, then the next episode is all about Mango and doesn't mention evo2007 at all, then the final episode is about evo2013.
Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can’t get it wrong - Mew2King (He didn’t say that but this quote applies to him)
When I saw them talk about Brawl I knew there'd be a shitstorm in the comments...
Match 4 will forever give me chills
What's the song at 10:00?
15:25 Is that Soul Calibur II on the top of that Gamecube game stack there? That game is really fun.
Ihdk what anyone says but that picture of ZeRo hugging M2K near the end was fucking adorable
These are soooooo good. Thank you so much for producing these. Totally inspiring!
rule #1: never trust reggie. ever.
Reggie gone :(
When the game is thought to be dead and yet the generations come together at RoM is one of my favorite parts. That beat, the player headcount, Match 4 and the feeling of hope, a good moment for our hero, hype and awe.
1:26 "Where the fuck did this pasty white kid learn how to play basketball?" hahah
I love this segment of the documentary for a reason. Of course I will support you.
M2K and Armada need a series.
Hearing M2K talk finally for the first time made me like him hahaha so much more normal than I thought
m2k is such a sweetheart; u cant help but love the guy
Mango once said that everyone who was ever good started out good and if you didn't, then you're not gonna be goodm . M2ks story proved him wrong
I'm here after his video with the current allegations to many many of the smashers, Mew2king might just cemented himself even more as the true 🐐 of Smash
aye same
"We can play anywhere"
"yeah, but against who?"
"……. that's a good point."
when and why did azen leave?
After watching this video, I realize that this is why Mew2King plays Marth: Marth is precise. You have to have excellent spacing to make sure Marth gets the tipper damage. Once you get grabbed by Marth, you have to be precise to get the chain grab combo. Marth combined with Mew2King's precision is incredible.
everyone seems so confused at M2K, and then
"I like him. :D"
Brawl was and forever will be the game I was most hyped for over everything else.
yeah brawl is really poorly made when it comes to competitive play, but if you look at it in a different light it's still pretty awesome. You have a bigger character roster, more stages, customizable stages, and the kickass subspace emissonary. And without brawl project m wouldn't exist so you have to give it credit for that.
Absolutely. Coming from a competitive Melee player, I 100% agree. And subspace emissary was AMAZING. Shame it didn't return for Smash 4.
mrzombiesbo Tbh, the only thing that made the subspace emissary amazing were the cutscenes. And guess what? Sakurai decided not to make them for Smash 4 because "someone uploaded it to RUclips" -_-
Fieryvortex48 Well doesn't everyone hate spoilers? Ruins the overall gaming experience
"And trust me, it's the best Smash Brothers, by far"
M2K went to my sisters high school smash melee club.
"I like proof that a nobody can become number one."
I love this quote sooooooooooooooooo much. My most inspirational Smasher, also giving some inspirational advice, this guy is by far the most inspirational person there's ever been to me, not just as a Smasher, but as a person too.
M2K is my inspiration for becoming pro in smash bros. One of my goals is to beat him in at least one match. He's too awesome!
