you need to hit the sign softly and slowly. if you hit it too many times per second, you will respawn. Hit it too hard, and you fall. the edge of the board bounces higher on signs, so I flip and grab to hit the signs with it. It's really hard and rare in runs that are not tool-assisted

This looks like it was done on the Japanese/PAL version of the game. does that version have any hidden benefits for higher scores?
It was indeed done on NTSC-J. there's no benefits outside a few of the voices and the font, but it livens it up more for me personally.
I observed Unlock Full Stats, Sticky Board (No Fail), Unlock Everything but you are good in collecting X. Approved!
