    Previously in this pinned post I had a poll asking people what their experience with the performance of this game was and sure enough, on every platform besides PC we had a near 50/50 split, but in response on twitter, facebook and here on youtube the reason has largely come to light.
    If you want to avoid slowdown it can be done to a large extent but at a shitty compromise. If you have 2 or more magic users on your team and they have AOE attacks enabled, when more than 1 or 2 are cast at a time between you and the enemies it causes the frame rate to tank. So.. you can avoid slowdown but it may come at the cost of no longer being able to build your team the way you want. Thankfully, this at least answers why we've all had different experiences, as we all had different builds while we played.

    • @shadowmaksim
      @shadowmaksim 6 лет назад +1

      I just want to chime in with my own observations regarding the whole slowdown deal if that's okay.
      I played on a base PS4 and did experience a lot of slowdown. It was just fine in the beginning but it started happening at some point and was consistently there since.
      I rotated my party constantly, mostly to keep everyone leveled, so every character had plenty of time on the field. Based on my experiences, the lag seems to happen primarily when there are a bunch of particle effects and you are standing right next to where they are going off. So party build definitely seems to be a factor.
      For instance, most AOE offensive Forces definitely cause it happen. The larger they are or the longer they linger, the more likely the slowdown will happen or get even worse. Marion in particular caused a lot of slowdown for me as many of her attacks are either mortar rounds that explode or a flamethrower of sorts so there are lots of particle effects going off due to her.
      Range also seems to be a factor as the few times I played as a ranger or caster, using their attacks that normally caused slowdown suddenly didn't. Even Marion, who was the biggest culprit for me, barely caused any when I briefly played as her.
      In all, if you're playing as a melee character, which is likely as many stick with Yuma, and your party build consists of casters with access to their AOE offensive Forces or just have Marion included, the likelihood of there being slowdown is high. Reason being that, as a melee character, you're always going to be right next to the enemies where those slowdown causing attacks are going off.
      So in theory, it is possible to avoid most of the slowdown from happening. Either play as a ranged character so you usually stay away from enemies, don't set any AOE offensive Forces on your casters, don't use Marion at all, etc. But not completely as attacks from enemies, bosses in particular, are still a factor and you can't really do much about them except for trying to kill them quickly.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад

      Yeah, This is the conclusion I've been coming to as well. Just been trying to see what other peoples experiences were like so I could verify it.
      It seems a lot of slow down can be avoided, but it may be at the cost of building your team in a way you don't want to. It's a trade-off sure but it's nice to know it's not 100% guaranteed to occur. Now if only they can optimize in a way to allow people to use whatever team build they want without issues that'd be great. Thanks for the comment!

    • @TSouL22
      @TSouL22 6 лет назад

      I beat this game on a base PS4 and experienced LOTS of slowdowns. I had to remove Marion from my group since her normal Break attack caused the frames to drop. I also only equipped non-flashy Force attacks to reduce the frame drops.
      Overall, it didn't make the combat harder since dragonshifted Yuma lets you win pretty much every battle by mashing Square (Regular ver) or Triangle (Shining ver).

      I am near the end of the game on switch. Had some slow down but not unplayable. It gets worse if you try adding enemy lure gems to multiple party members.

    That fencer princess lady, forgot her name, she has an ability in which she does a lot of sword thrusts. Great for breaking enemies, does not cost a lot of action points, and you can go as long as you keep pressing the button. There are jewels that reduces AP cost, and will make the sword thrusts near spammable.

    I enjoy the game overall, great Japanese voice acting and I disagree on it sounding compress, I enjoy the relationship system, having the dlc outfits is great, the combat is decent and the ap system does not get in the way like it did in valkiria revolution and it's nice that enemies lvl with you, games is a decent middle of the road fun time, excella is my favorite personal girl, any way bullet girls phantasia is so close to release have collectors edition pre ordered.

    2 things that stuck out to me are A) how the water always looked garbled at the edges, like they didn't synch it with the shoreline but instead to your characters' perspective, and B) how the main party looks like inoffensively generic pop idols, but there are a spattering of NPCs in the hub world (like the weather lady and the bard) whose designs would make for a top tier Star Ocean party.

  • @Naryoril

    I played through the original version in Japanese when it came out, i even bought a new, larger TV for it because the text font was so freaking small i couldn't read the kanji from my couch.
    As you, in the end i was disappointed in the game, due to many of the issues you mention here. There was however another issue i had with the game when it comes to the battle system, and it has to do with balance and the sense of progression. I mostly played as Sonia (if i remember the name correctly, i mean the knight girl). The first, or one of the first special moves she learns remains her most effective move through the whole game to such an extent, that there is not much reason to use any other move at all... This really kills the joy of leveling up and getting stronger.
    My other biggest gripe with the game, and you mentioned it in the video, was the excessive backtracking. The world is pretty small, there is no way to teleport and so you run through the same areas over and over and over and over.

Sadly this game doesn't exist in this world only in my head lol

    I'm playing this game on PS4 and I'm liking it. Sometimes I like to play jrpgs like this or INFINITE UNDISCOVERY for example. Nice change of pace compared to the big AAA games. Great review again Tarks!

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +1

      I absolutely hated infinite undiscovery but I do tend to prefer b-grade rpg's over A-grade ones. Usually the lack of hyper polish keeps me on my toes and makes each game feel relatively unique in their own way.
      Also, since playing infinite undiscovery I've had "Check out my lunaglyph" lodged somewhere in the back of my head. I heard it so much in battle in that game haha. Love the imagery of it though. The moon chained to the earth was an awesome idea, and there was a cool plot twist mid game involving the MC. I won't say more though cause it'd be a huge confusing spoiler for everybody.

    Thanks a lot for this review, I wasn't aware of the technical hiccups, will definitely wait for patches and discounts. Also, could it be that the Japanese voice track gets distorted at high volume levels due to bad equalizing? If that was the case, maybe it could be solved by lowering all volume levels a bit.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +1

      I feel like that's the first thing I checked. At lower volumes it's less obvious but there's still compression artifacts. That said, I don't think too many people will care much. I went through school for audio engineering and trained my ears, and now even little things will drive me nuts. So many good albums I used to love that I now turn on and hear compression distortion all over the place.

    Well I for one enjoyed the game big time, obviously its nothing amazing, the characters are somewhat tropey and do not develip in any unexpected ways, but they are likeable and somewhat relatable, not to mention to my eyes they rarely did anything just outright idiotic, which on its own is amazing in jrpgs. And as for the story, honestly it managed to subvert many of my expectations, while it wasnt mindblowing in any way and Yuma has his issues as MC (what a shocker right) It wasnt nearly as cliché and boring as it could have been and I was invested :)
    Also, as mentioned, on PC I had no lag or slowdown or even dip bellow 60 fps in no way shape or form. I am actually replaying the game and having fun again :)

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад

      Good to hear it dude. Reviews for some things in this game are fickle. To be objective I have to state things like how the characters are and interactions are tropey and generic even if I enjoyed a lot of them myself. Hopefully people just decide if fun tropes are something they want to give their time to again. And yeah, PC seems to run flawless from everything I've read in the steam reviews.

Like dropping from 60 fps to 50 fps for 1-2 seconds when surrounded by 6 or more enemies and ive got three magic user blasting AoE explosions at the same time. Outside of these conditions, absolutely no slowdown. 😊

    Such a shame they didn't polish it a bit more. It seems like a bit of a lazy port. Surely the PS4 shouldn't have slowdown issues that the PS3 version had. I'm still interested in checking it out when I inevitably find it on sale, though.
    Those musical elements are neat but so very cheesy. Reminds me a little of Eternal Sonata (though not quite as heavy-handed and over-the-top - and I do really like that game). I like the musical weapons though - I always like bows with strings on them, to be played like a lute or harp, and the... staff trombone? Whatever that thing is meant to be, it looks pretty neat too.

    Does anyone know if it plays better on ps4 pro (less slowdown) and how bad is the slow down on the switch? Worse than the base ps4?

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад

      I've asked 2 separate people about their experience on PS4 pro and they gave me polar opposite answers. That said, I have a feeling I know what's causing the slow down, I just need to do a little more research on it.
      My understanding right now is that some people experience more than others because of how they build their team. My team had a lot of magic capabilities so when my team-mates and enemies were all casting area-of-effect magic attacks the frame rate absolutely tanked.
      Even without a heavy focus on magic user there's still slowdown but not as bad. If this is the case, well, it kind of sucks in a way but it does mean you can avoid a bunch of the slowdown if you build your team with different people. I didn't want to use different people though, so I got a lot of it.

    Kinda funny how different versions of a console can make a difference with a game. I've been playing this on a slim and I've been enjoying it, but I don't recall having any slow downs. I have a base PS4 so it would probably perform the same way for me as it did for you, but the disc drive spits out discs lol I think I've fixed it recently, but especially playing a JRPG on that thing and if it were to spit out my disc on a big battle would make me go loony. lol

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +1

      My guess is that the biggest cause of the slow down is party build. I used Yuma, Kirika, Sonia and Rinna almost exclusively through out the whole game. This means lots of Area of effect magic attacks, and they seem to be what mostly tanks the frame-rate. If it's not too much of a bother, could you let me know what your team build was? I'm trying to come up with a more concrete answer to the performance in this game.

      Xenoblade Chronicles (any of them really) Persona 5, Nier Automata (If you consider it a JRPG) and if not Nier than any of the Trails of/Kiseki games released this decade. They're all easy contenders.
      Shining Resonance unfortunately doesn't come anywhere close to any of those games in basically any department.

      @@TarksGauntlet Xenoblade Chronicles ya i heard the raving, The game play forces gimmicks, camera is at a bad angle for most fights plus the characters are uninteresting.
      I'm hearing Amazing things about Persona 5 but I can't force myself to get a console for so few games. They do many focus on the style and not the story or the game play which is odd.
      I got Tales of Berseria I HATE the characters the story is dumb the game play is good but very linear. FF has been making linear forever and (other than 13) they do not make it feel that way. I have 40 hours into the game but lots of that time is me leaving the computer on and just walking away.
      I got Tales of Symphonia I have not played it yet, I already put it into the hidden category because of Berseria. I don't want to hope the people going against me will win. Does Tales of Symphonia have better characters and story.
      I tried Nier Automata because of the raving reviews AGAIN but I got a refund in time. Not an JRPG. The controls on PC were pretty good. Game play with soso controls was good. I don't remember the story or characters that much but I recall the story and/or history was anti human. If I was an android and programmed to like the game I would give it a 10/10.
      The main problem appears to be JRPGs are becoming too easy and going to hand held, having bad characters/stories or being made with RPG Maker(it feels so cheap...well its from a Indy developer).

      You know getting DLC to change their clothes and their real armor has not effect on what they look like does make you focus on the girls more.
      I did not buy any of the DLC for Tales of Berseria but I did not want the best gear just the best weapon. Why can't she be nude. She is almost wearing nothing now and I can get DLC to put her into a school uniform or idol outfit plus other things.
      So no balancing for armor which they have been using for over a thousand years? And even in 8 bit games?
      I did not say it in the other comment but I did not complete that game, I did state why. I hated the characters.

    What i hate most is that the game does not tell you about elemental weaknesses or weaknesses to types neither do guides if you look it up so the player just has to find this stuff out on their own which would have been useful to list for Gungnir and the end boss of chapter 5 Trishula like knowing their elemental weakness is pretty much essential if you don't want to be frustrated and have to grind.
    Like it is really infuriating with how little information of the game there is as again it does not tell you about elemental weaknesses or type weaknesses, you just figure those out by playing and then question to yourself why guides don't put those in their walkthroughs.
    Its a fun game and all just the sheer disappointment for their being lack of information on the game is again immeasurable hell it is the only one in the series without a speedrun and i can't figure out why as it is beatable in about 6 hours or under especially since you can actually skip a lot of the grinding, the cutscenes, and tutorials
    But for some reason some games don't get much traction while games that are way more boring such as Final Fantasy XIII do even in the speed running community so much that it just baffles me like it honestly baffles me that someone would prefer Final Hallway over this game

    • @iamLI3
      @iamLI3 Год назад

      bullshit , firstly the game does tell you almost everything except for what the elemental weaknesses of each enemy is and what the bond trails will do
      second , it does have a speedrun , because i have speedrun it , i am the only person in the world to have done so , and no you can't beat it in under 6 hours
      excellent point about final hallways 13 though , i literally made that same point in my review of shining :O

      @@iamLI3 pretty sure it does not tell you elemental weaknesses or type weaknesses, if it does then i definitely missed that somewhere even in my first playthrough before i figured out how to skip the tutorial messages which was my 3rd playthrough that i figured out how.
      And maybe not under but at the least at least on the switch i am sure it would be around 6 hours bare minimum unless skips are found if you abuse breaks plus shining dragon and enemy weaknesses and the band thingy so early on the dragon does not go out of control as the Dragon is broken. Plus 2k gold for 10 Marga stones so you don't have to waste time to backtrack till the game forces you to like in chapter 4's end boss Trishula which you can get to and beat via stunlock in 2 hours and 50min using the best form of the Shining Dragon the first one as long as you don't inter the shining dragon mode while the band session is going as then you lose that form and get the next one which Trishula is immune to fire damage and guess what damage it does.
      Sure there are some RNG in hoping you don't instantly go berserk in that fight which can happen forcing you to use a band session then instantly turning it off so you can cheese that annoying fight. And another annoying thing is if you die in that fight you lose the first form instantly so reload the save instead of clicking continue.
      And if i recall correctly you don't actually use Yuma and the Shining dragon in your runs or run the full game. Also the comment you are replying to was before i seen your channel which is why i said there are no speedruns as google did not show your stuff to me at the time or i was forgetting and only counting full runs of the game.

      @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena Год назад +1

      @@iamLI3 Honestly i would need very good RNG and if you were to ask me last year i would say the most i can personally do is 8 hours due to dying too much and the shining dragon instantly going berserk outside of band sessions before the end of chapter 4 as i had very bad rng and Yuma had full mp when i did it so yeah abysmal rng. As early on i spammed it to fight the first few bosses before having to grind a bit to fight Jinas 1 as he is annoying.
      Now there are some annoying fights that having the first form shining dragon would have been great on as stunlock but you would need to get Dragon Reverse aspect which you get after chapter 5 if you went berserk before the end of chapter 4 and calmed him with the band session then you have to complete Rapple's 4 quests that gives alchemic recipes which then you have to rely on RNG to get the items to make it
      And to top it all off you have to rely on more rng to not go berserk as you are reverting back to the first form. So yeah 6 hours would rely on a lot of RNG as i am sure breaking does more than elemental weaknesses but i could be mistaken
      But no matter what the most annoying boss and time sink is Gungnir as i forget his elemental weakness and he is just a fucking damage sponge that really hurts. After that all the other bosses actually feels like a breeze even without the Dragon Revert aspect

  • @shadowmaksim
    @shadowmaksim 6 лет назад

    Yeah, those are generally my thoughts.
    There are just so many odd design decisions that make the game feel rather dated, past the fact that it's a port of a 4 year old game. I could go on and on with the mechanic issues and lack of general quality-of-life aspects I noticed. Not to mention, despite not being technically impressive, the performance suffers in ways that it really shouldn't have.
    That said, it's really not a terrible game, there is still plenty to like about the game. But it isn't exactly a truly good game either as the issues notably stand out. It's right down the middle of being average and barely being noteworthy. Standard gameplay, standard story and characters, standard aesthetic, etc.
    Either way, after a very rough start, I got into the grove of things and ended up enjoying the game well enough for what it was.
    4:36 - I know this is very disdainful but I just can't help but laugh at one particular grinding wall scenario the game had regardless. I mean, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why this forced sortie would cause people issues. But the fact that it has been an issue for so many people on top of the game having the reputation of being a waifu game prior to launching...I guess most people just didn't bother on ever using those specific characters that were needed. I almost want to say the developers purposely did this as it lined up far too perfectly.
    9:15 - Speaking of costumes, this game unfortunately falls right in with this trend that's been going on for a couple years now that I've slowly been growing to dislike more and more. At least in my opinion, the additional outfits are just...so...typically boring.
    Swimsuits, maid/butler uniforms, various school related outfits, idol clothes, various other fetish/cosplay wear, etc.
    This game lines up with those complains I've had to the tee, even having several swimsuits for every female character. Outside of the Idol outfits which I thought were decent, main issue being there's only two variants shared across the entire cast, and one particular character's special outfit...none of them looked remotely good to me. I stuck with everyone's default outfits through the entire game. The fact that this was, presumingly DLC, both saddens and infuriates me.
    There's like barely any creativity anymore for additional outfits. All the effort is put in the characters' default looks and that's usually almost just it most of the time.

    • @TarksGauntlet

      All true. Thankfully the costumes are free at least. I'm a sucker for the maid uniforms though haha. And yes.. THAT grind wall... ugh.A few hours in the grimoire egg hunts took care of the problem, but if I didn't have what I needed for egg hunts I would have been there for days.

    I just recently finished this, skipped side content and plowed the story stuff in 20 hours. This game sucks, generic as hell and boring. The worse thing is the abundance of backtracking and going through the same 4 areas over and over again. That being said it has a ton of great stuff they never fully utilized and left things half done. The biggest disappointment was the hype of Zest that due to the lack of cutscenes and more Visual Novel story telling really made his character look weaker than they hyped him up to be since they never actually showed it but just faded to black when something cool was supposed to happen. And for anyone wanting to try it out just go in with little expectation and do yourself a favor and play Refrain mode since it offers more content and such without changing the main story at all. So in shorter words Original mode is useless
