    I discovered a little Fusion 360 hack I wanted to show. In this video I demonstrate how to wrap text around a cylinder using the new Sheet Metal environment. Enjoy!

    Maybe it's a new feature, i wouldn't know cause i'm new to Fusion 360 myself, but there is a more direct way to accomplish this now. You simple make the text sketch, and when you are going to extrude, instead of changing the Extent option, you change the Start option, and select From object. That way you get the same result in one step. The sketch doesn't even have to be in an offset plan or whatever, that doesn't matter, you can do it in the origin if you want.

      When I attempt to do that I get this error:

      What am I doing wrong?

    Vladomir - thisis SO simple. I have been searching for how to do this for ages and ages. Lots of convoluted things like using sheetmetal functions, uncurving surface and so on - this is a simple and great way to do it!!

    I really like your style of presenting. I'm new to Fusion 360. When I do a search for some how to do facet of Fusion 360 I want a short, clear, concise, and focused explanation without other stuff. You did it beautifully. Thank you.

    After the extrusion to object you can use move type "translation" combined with edge axis option and select an edge on your text it is more accurate especially with complexe shapes

    This does not fix the distortion problem with the letters, they are not truly wrapped around, it's just a projection. Try wrapping around the entire circumference of the sphere this way, you simply can't. This is not a genuine solution to this problem.

    • @ericmac564
      @ericmac564 7 лет назад

      create an offset plane to apply letters to, then use this feature.

    • @GregTakacs
      @GregTakacs 7 лет назад +9

      You mean create an offset plane for each letter? That is ridiculous! And it still will not wrap the letters properly, it'll be a "good enough" fix but not a true solution.

    • @valveman12
      @valveman12 6 лет назад +3

      The difference between "good enough" and perfect, is that "good enough" gets the job done!

    • @RockSleeper
      @RockSleeper 6 лет назад +1

      Really though, this is a pretty expected feature to have in a program like this. It matters for certain projects that the sketches can be projected properly to curved surfaces then extruded in the correct direction as well. I don't see what's so hard about having that feature.

    Distortion problem is still unsolved, the letters must be radially extruded reference to center of the circular/ spherical object

    Hi, these are great. have you tried to to do this with split the face of the line drawing or text. it works well if you want a cut shape around a curved surface like a cylinder

  • @legion2k988
    @legion2k988 7 лет назад

    I like you're video. Thank you for it. You might do one on how to wrap text around it so that all the sides point to the center of the circle. While all the lengths were the same so were the angles. Right? Unless I'm missing something.. I think it's project to cylinder or something,

    Hey can you do a video of wrapping a image onto a dome or curved surface. Say I import an stl or dxf and watch to protect it onto a surface but curved with the surface. Raised not cut into the surface. Thanks!

    is there a way to "bend" the text to not distort the spacing or letters? to be able to "wrap" text around a cylinder.

    • @DesktopMakes
      @DesktopMakes  7 лет назад +2

      I'll look into this. I did notice that the closer to the edge the more distorted the letters look. I'll post a follow up video if I can find a way to avoid the distortion. Not sure if you can do it with text yet.

    • @DesktopMakes
      @DesktopMakes  7 лет назад +1

      Not that I know of yet. But there is talk of sheet metal functionality that is supposed to be released soon that is going to allow this.

    • @joeargyle
      @joeargyle 7 лет назад

      You can project to surface but from what I've seen distortion still occurs.
      The best option might be to download and install this plugin which will wrap sketches to a cylinder.
      github.com/hanskellner/Fusion360WrapSketch
      You could draw up a cylinder the same diameter as your sphere. Then wrap your text. That would remove any horizontal distortion.

    please do a tutorial on how to do a curved text inside a circle. let´s say you have a Gas cap and want to do a text on top on the cap that follows the circle around. Not the edge around it but on the top surface. i can´t get it to work in Fusion 360
