Pioneer Space Sim - Frontier Remake

- Pioneer is a fan remake of Frontier: Elite II, Frontier took major steps forward with its use of procedural content to generate an entire galaxy to explore (except you had to cheat to get to 99.999% of the systems because space is so huge). Most of the design stays true to the original low polygon aesthetics but it extends the galaxy to be more 3D than it was before and of course makes the whole thing run on modern OS's

(and if you're interested in backing the development of Elite: Dangerous then take a look at their site elite.frontier...)
Hi Scott, I'm one of the Pioneer devs. Thanks for the great video!
Yeah. there's a lot wrong with the game. Our people our ugly, ships are overpowered, trade is horked, prices are crap. The whole thing is pretty unbalanced, but we're working on it as our volunteers have time (come join in!)
I took some notes about things you had trouble with, particularly the search (we know). We'll keep working on it!
This box won't let me write much, but email me if you want answers to questions :)
Frontier Elite II had one of the best intros on the amiga
Oh. My. God... I loved Frontier so much I bought it twice, once for My Amiga CDTV when it came out and once for my PC several years later. I still own both copies and still have the PC Box with the galaxy map, story booklet and manual I need this game now! :)
Thats right it had a movie rendered in the game engine. It was also one of the first 3D games that did collision properly - with objects that had 'holes' you could fly through.
I have been with Pioneer Space Sim FOR YEARS!!! (also helped them find bugs lol) ... is nice that at least they are getting the respect they deserve
As a longtime follower of your channel, I wholeheartedly concur that you should give Evochron Mercenary a go. It features all the aspects of combat, trade, mining, interstellar window-washing, a very large universe to explore, seamless planet transitions, extreme customizing of ships, AND online play. Frankly, I'm surprised you haven't tried it yet, it is a very well made and under-rated game.
Are you talking about this game or the actual Elite 4 which you can back.
I used to play Frontier with my 8-year-old son acting as "gunner" on the Amiga A500. Happy memories. I also ran it on the PC, but it never had the same attraction. Question is, whether I as a retiree who has stopped playing games of most kinds can re-discover the magic with this remake. Thanks for your videos, Scott. I love your content and irreverent sense of humour (my daughter used to live in Dumfries, where you have to try really hard to find anything humorous).
Are you a new backer? Are you sure you have LTI? Or did you buy it from another player?
Games worth revisiting, changed quite a lot
Yes, there's an autopilot option to put your ship into orbit.
Dev tip: The star search only looks at the stars in or near you screen, rather than all 100 billion of them, which is why Rigel didn't get found when you searched. It's in the game all right.
Finally a game that works on linux! Thanks for showing this scott!
Ahhh... Bravo for knowing the original title & how epic it was.
This is some of "The very best" Scott manley. simply priceless. 4:40
One trick you can do to make combat extremely easy is to hit pause and find the nearest target, then click on him and set autopilot. No matter how maneuverable or fast he is you'll stick to him like glue, allowing you to take pot shots at him until he's toast (or until he crashes headlong into you, whatever works). Worked like a dream in the original Frontier.
Whoah, it's changed a lot! I played it back in 2012 when it was... different.
I want to tool up my freelancer for deep space exploration.
And parties, I want a soundsystem and a discoball in my cargo bay.
Oh sorry I didn't mean to make you mad, mistakes happen I just want to make sure other people are aware.
I tried going through the RobertsSpaceIndustries site and it has an Amazon payment option, but I'm not sure if amazon gift cards work for that.
Regardless, I'm glad to have you as a citizen, I look forward to seeing people in space.
Hey :) happy to see this here, I was the one who asked you about this in the X-Rebirth thread on frontier forums. While the game is not without its issues, it is still a very beautiful remake of the original Frontier game. Very much looking forward to Elite 4 and your videos of it :)
Wolf 359 is the 359th star listed in Max Wolf's catalog, hence the name.
I really want THIS version!
I remember in the original Frontier you could make a lot of money importing military fuel to Military bases.
I wish more games like this used windows like in FSX, where you can open windows with camera views with either instruments or camera angles. A main monitor for navigation and hull info and such, and then having one or two touch monitors for instruments, trading and whatever would be great.
Hello Scott! They are making an official remake of Elite!
This game is amazing :D Only problem I have is that I rarely encounter anyone and it kind of just feels empty and makes it really difficult to be a pirate. Is there any way to increase the amount of ships flying around?
Yeah....Shoot a base you'll get alot of ships flying around.....lol
Evochron Merc is fantastic, apart from the usual trading, mining, dogfighting that you expect from a space sim; you also have planetary landings and exploration.
It's Eve meets Frontier but with a nicer community of people and a higher focus on exploration than "Hurr mai guns are big".
Just uh.. don't trust the autopilot, it'll slam you into planets for fun.
Return and RIght shift control velocity, f5 changes autopilot modes.
Generations of living on other planets, with different gravitational forces, atmospheric pressures and compositions would certainly have a serious effect on human physiology and thats before one factors in genetic and cybernetic alteration to better suit their new enviroments and occupations
yep, good talking to you scott, keep pumping out the good videos
Damn right you should! The Evochron series has been developed for like 10 years by a single dude!!
Scott makes a Pioneer vid and Elite Dangerous releases an awesome Battleship combat video, This is no accident people This is the internet telling you something - go pledge!!
My plan is to keep the Ukulele for KSP, and then have different intros for other game series.
Yes, although, this very specificly is trying to recreate the UI of a 20 year old game. However I remember a game which let you design your own cockpit layouts 'Academy: Tau Ceti 2' - I played that a ton when I was a kid.
You know another thing about amazon gift cards - you can buy a lot of games for steam using Amazon money, and they have deals that are independent from the deals on steam - today they have a pack with most (all?) of the Hitman games for $8.99.
I found out tonight that I was playing Frontier wrong. Like you, and nearly every other player, I was space jousting and it was frustrating as hell. Turns out you are supposed to turn the engines off for combat, then you can maintain position under 1km from your opponent. Check out the videos from Isinona here on RUclips.
Now I just need a time machine, to go back 20 years and tell young me how to play properly.
I got a digital bounty hunter package on star citizen with LTI on amazon today, SUPER excited!!!
"Glory to Ashoszka! Glory to Ashoszka!" I can't get this out of my head.... in your Voice :D
wow, I had never thought to look. now I have 60 dollars left that actually mean something. thanks for the insight scott. btw, in response to your freelancer comment, I wonder if you can dock two ships together and have a super space party, totally rock out and look like something out of KSP (you know what I mean, I know what I mean, weve all built things like that before). I imagine people with the aurora would have ease because of those super compatible looking doors on the sides.
I love how youtube saves where you last left off in videos longer than 30 minutes.
Honestly, I was (positively) surprised too. I even didn't know that they're doing it trough KS, just browsed for Raspberry Pi news and there it was.
I don't see much missing to be honest, it was always a lonely experience.
Maynardville is a town in east Tennessee, north of Knoxville. I'm not entirely sure how it's supposed to have been transplanted to another star system, but I've little doubt it could occur without notice.
Scot have you heard for Infinity Quest for Earth. It is also made procedural like Privater but it seams incredibly detailed.
All these years later, I have to say that I enjoy Pioneer a bit more than Elite: Dangerous, lol
A lot has changed since the 2013 release. This is still the best Space SimGame to date, next to Oolite, Elite Dangerous is good but it isn't open source
I have actually, I have rebuild for my Nexus 7 - and boy I sometimes wonder why I'd want to save some of those people.
i play this.and its just great.a lot of fun,explore,and sneeking around.great stuff.
No it's a 32bit remake of a 16 bit sequel to a classic 8 bit game.
For over a decade.
I remember playing the original elite. If i remember correctly, i always struggled to dock till i could find and afford a docking computer.
In fact, i was terrible at that game, which BTE i played on a amiga 500 with an additional 500k of ram.
something like that would have to breath 2 CO for every CO2 it expelled, and it would also expel Carbon, and the energy it gets is of course from breaking the bonds between the atoms.
i like how he loads up his ship with liquor. takes off then fly's into a building. i wonder what they were thinking?
It just reminds me of how frustrating Frontier was. I can't go anywhere or do anything because I run out of fuel in seconds. Couldn't even go from Earth to Mars.
Refuel your ship? ;-; Tbh sometimes I forget to refuel and I realize I didn't refuel like halfway on my journey. Then I run out of fuel ;(.
First ship other than your own that you come across, Gandhi's Revenge. This game wins automatically.
I used to play Elite on my big brothers Amstrad 6128
Sound I will give this a go. Was only looking for Frontier for the Amiga a month or so back. Couldn't find it out, so this may be a good option!
Wow they really improved the game since the last time i looked into it.
Duh, yeah you're right. But yeah the point is that I'm sure you could contrive some life form that breaths CO and emits CO2
Fly safe! will never quite be the same after watching this episode :)
In the Elite 'verse, a Jameson is a rookie pilot, named for Commander Jameson.
Great voice for radio.
would be even better if it was on Amiga
Nice intro scott. Like it.
I hope they add research into KSP. After many successful missions you get enough money to upgrade something. Another cool thing would be to add like 2 other star systems that are very far.
Yes I'm a backer, I spent 100 pounds on it - check the description for the chance to join up.
So nostalgic!
I honestly think scott is going through an intro scene mid life crisis here. :)
looks like the avatars are a composite imgname :D I will give this a go ... and most likely donate a bit to these guys :) for the effort
i lost my jaw in first 5 minutes of video, so i cant continue watching until i find it =)
I was ironic :) ED wouldn't be there if there wouldn't be backers. Publishers haven't seen very profitable space sim for years, so they aren't interested. So thanks to people throwing money together.
Make this a series please, Scott!
i was eating and almost choked when i saw all the faces
military fuel is used for military hyperspace drives. i don't think you'll find it on major import list anywhere.
You wanted reason why we have to wait for so long for Elite: Dangerous :)
Oh God, those Avatars.
The marker that you were so scared of was your destination...
this guy's got some pretty good reviews, looks like he bought a bunch of ships early on and is selling them now to people that couldn't get it before. which is good, because CVS wont refund my amazon gift card, and hes my only way out. I put myself in a tight corner, and looked for a flashlight. basically, he emails you the package.
Yes, its pretty awesome. Kinda like X series, but alittle more player friendly.
Love these avatars! lol
I've helped a few people get LTI, but this sounds like an industrial scale profiteering operation.
I made a video about it a long time ago.
Nope, I own it, never had time for it.
Should I make a video about it?
[1 megawatt power cannon]
I want 5 megawatts by mid-May.
I'm from the future, Elite doing well, Roberts went mental.
Should Scott Manley make a video?
YES! :D
Nice game! There is a facegen mod to ""fix"" the funny avatar faces. ^_^
they have a bunch of ships posted, not just one. they seemed pretty public, with so many packages for sale
I'm here any time you need help with this kind of stuff.
WE'VE GONE INTO PLAID!
Skeletor knows how that feels :P
so, are you going to be the daring space explorer, the bright, shining military fighter pilot, or the leader of a cunning band of pirates?
Weapon fire is kind of different here compared to Frontier, atleast the lasers and plasma weaponry there were pretty much instantaneous for combat ranges. Though admittedly that makes combat more dependent on being able to aim I suppose, and not so much dependent on other factors.
If you who is reading this right now are unaware. You may be interested to know that voyager 1 officially left the solar system. Just thought II would share the news.
wtf, there's an Elite 4 coming out after all? So Mr. Braben didn't let us down, he only postponed it ... a lot!
The avartars are not ugly, they just look like normal people and not like plasticky Barbie and Ken.
listening to a lot of drive time recently Scott? Good ole' radio 2
Hey, this video is 5 minutes old. I feel special.
10 years old now. Has anything changed?
@@intrepidis1 I'm 30 now but I still feel special
A billion stars, and the only one i notice is the Faphiho system...
omgfg emragod, holycrap are my ears really hearing a new intro? the old one waas cool tho!!
