Remembering the Armada 2017 - The Spanish Armada in Sligo

This ceremony provides a fitting end to Remembering the Armada, which takes place annually on Streedagh Beach, which is located along the Wild Atlantic Way in Sligo, Ireland.
Every year, locals and visitors alike assemble at Streedagh to pay tribute to the lives of Spanish Armada sailors, 1,100 of whom died on the beach in 1588.
In recent years, this event has also come to attract many Spanish people who come to connect with their ancestors. The Armada story at Streedagh is a complex one, which brings to mind a time of conflict, deprivation and at every step, a fight for survival.
The account of Captain Francisco de Cuéllar, a Spanish Armada survivor at Streedagh, describes a world which we can scarcely relate to, much less judge. Therefore, by paying tribute to all of the lives lost during those tumultuous days at Streedagh, we respectfully remember those souls who perished, and we hope in some small way that this will help build new friendships between the Irish and Spanish people who come to the event.
Filmed on location at Streedagh Beach, Sligo on September 24th 2017 by local television production company Omedia with soundtrack by Niamh Farrell, who sings the lament "Úna Dheas Ní Niadh".

This is when my Spanish Armada hundreds of years ago great grandfather with wavy dark curls climbed the cliffs to be rescued by the Irish. He married an Irish Catholic and he was Spanish Catholic. He taught his family the dance and hands by side it became the Irish dance. To this day. My brother was born with these beautiful dark curls.

As a Spaniard with Irish DNA I find this moving. Let's not forget that the Celts settled the North of Spain and their blood runs through our veins. Funny thing is that I did a DNA test and fair enough I have a good percentage of Irish DNA and I love it, specially after watching this video.

Siempre me han caído bien los Irlandeses .Cuando estuve de vacaciones en Irlanda conocí gente muy cálida e incluso salí en la Cabalgata del día del Hallowen que me invitaron a salir en ella .Estuve por toda la parte del Sur y es precioso . Son tierras como de Duendes , aunque no son campos como los de España , que son más ricos , allí las tierras son poco productivas.

I was told years ago my ancestors were Spanish. The story is that when Phillip II sent the Armada Grande in 1588 - the family were traders, and provide 4 barques of ships. They were captained by the father and three sons. Then in August or September - the actual date is vague, the father arrived home. The mother evidently died either later that year or early the following year - it is said she died of a broken heart.
At least one of those brothers must have come ashore, and assimilated in to the local population. What I do know is his name was - Juan, or Pedro, or Jaimie, because that is the name of the three sons who sailed with their father.
My paternal grandfather's first name was James - Jaimie, and he asserted he was named after his Spanish great-great- ..... great grand father. He also had some 'treasures,' which he said were off the ship. As a child it did not really register.
Here I am 72 years of age and only recently discovered that my great grandfather was born in Drogheda, married my great grandmother who was born near Belfast, moved to England where my granddad was born, great grand dad died. Great granny remarried and had another son who died in World War 1.
May all who died in the Armada and other conflicts rest in peace.

The Royal Navy was defeated multiple times by the Spanish Navy, but History omits it.
Francis Drake, was defeated in Veracruz in the battle of San Juan de Ulua in 1568.
The Invincible English, invasion fleet sent by Isabel I to defeat to the Spanish navy, was defeated by Spain and its navy in 1589.
Edward Vernon was defeated in Cartagenas De Indias by Blas de Lezo in 1741.
Horacio Nelson, the great victor of Trafalgar, was defeated in Tenerife, Spain, 25 of July of 1797.
Before the Royal Navy was the owner of the seas, its predecessor was the Spanish Navy, who dominated the seas and made Spain the first global empire in world history,
and also has the merit of discovering the American continent.
