- In 1588, 3 ships of the Spanish Armada, La Lavia, La Santa María de Visión and La Juliana, were wrecked at Streedagh Beach in Sligo, Ireland, as they retreated following defeat to the English. Over 1,100 men died at Streedagh as a result.
In 2016 a Spanish navy vessel, the OPV Centinela, made the return trip to the shores of Sligo to honour the memory of the fallen Armada soldiers. This video was produced by Omedia to mark this historic event.
To view the recovery of cannon by the Underwater Archaeology Unit from one of these galleons - La Juliana - visit • Spanish Armada in Slig... .

Other Spanish drama against the English in Ireland some years later...: "Spanish forces invaded the Co Cork harbour town of Kinsale in response to a plea for help from Irish insurgents.
What followed was one of the greatest siege dramas in world history - an epic confrontation that deserves to rank alongside The Alamo and Rorke’s Drift.
The Spanish troops _(33 men) held out for 100 days - enduring a crippling siege, ravaged by hunger and dysentery, and shivering through the harshest winter in living memory - before sailing home undefeated.":

When Russia sorts the Syrian, Libya and Iraq problem from NATO/ISIS we could ask Mr Putin to send over a wee fleet of modern nuclear ships and ground troops to free the last 6 counties from the left over Tans.
Interesting my mother was born in Sligo my dad is English my sisters and I have English / Irish DNA and … Spanish and Portuguese 😲🤷♀️
Bet Tha would not be done in the north for the girona wreck
Pike. Yes the same was done for the Girona. Why so bitter.?!
There were more "english armadas" trying to conquist Spain than vice-versa.
Is it true that the dark haired and brown eyed people (Black Irish) in Ireland came from the Armada?
@Sergi González No. Most sailors were captured or killed and any survivors would not have impacted the Irish DNA. Also ‘Black Irish’ is an old American term used to describe Irish people with black hair. A young Pierce Brosnan being a prime example.
No. Sergius. Any Dark eyed Irish go much further back than that.
