I’m friends with one of Shirley’s sons, Zach. He left the cult many years ago and hasn’t talked to her for years. He expressed to me how toxic, controlling, and pessimistic she was. She was also physically abusive to him and his siblings growing up. When he announced he was leaving, Shirley cried hysterically all night and begged him not to leave. As a young man who is gay, Shirley and the Westboro Baptist Church used to really offend me. I’m friends with one of Shirley’s sons, Zach. He left the cult many years ago and hasn’t talked to her for years. He expressed to me how toxic, controlling, and pessimistic she was. She was also physically abusive to him and his siblings growing up. When he announced he was leaving, Shirley cried hysterically all night and begged him not to leave. He said he was done with hatred, he was done with the cult, and he was done with her. He now advocates love, peace, and acceptance. He’s very compassionate, soft spoken, and empathetic. Shirley is devoid of those things. He’s a wonderful person and it’s her loss. She’s a dark, dysfunctional person.
