  • Mark Durene, a global worker in Thailand, explains why commonly taught Bible verse are confusing to Buddhists. He takes us through John 3:16 step-by-step and helps us understand the Buddhist perspective of the Good News of the cross. Mark's stories from life in Thailand bring life to the barriers to the Gospel in the Buddhist mindset.

Thank you! This explanation of Buddist beliefs helps me understand why accepting the Gospel is so difficult for them. It also helps to learn how to share the Gospel.

So, your presentation is about Thai Buddhism..
Many types of Buddhists are there. I've met people who've been ardent Buddhists and become followers of Christ. Really there are only a very few who can answer questions about what they believe, just as much as a good number of "Christians". Much academic or intellectual treatise about Buddhism has done little... Buddist people have to be understood as Sinful humans just like any other. I know One man who's a unique Apologist... But he didn't learn his unique mn methods from books or seminaries.. But by talking to people in a way that they understand.

Your understandinging of love in Buddhism is limited. All Buddhist schools praise metta (maîtri in sanskrit), very similar too agape, in contrast to eros.

Buddha's confusion about "SUFFERING" and "DESIRE"
Buddha was in complete error to claim that life is full of suffering.
Because all suffering in this world is any ways not seen/ experienced as bad even by Buddhist, or even by buddha himself. His own experience of penance he claims lead him to a blissful experience of enlightenment!! (So he just contradicted himself about "ALL SUFFERING" )
Moreover, a woman who goes through a pregnancy, however painful or hard the 9 months be, - Do you know of one woman in this whole world who cares about that pain after seeing her child? Do you know of one woman who says that she does not want another child because of the pain she experiences in first? So this suffering is ultimately produces so much of good, that the one who experiences it does love to go through this experience.
Moreover, even in Buddhist country, that had to be at war with raiding neighbors. All citizens, / Leaders, including Buddhists, and THEIR MONKS, celebrate the patriot LOVE of the buddhist young men who went to fight against the invading nation and sacrificed their life for the common good of all other citizens including "BUDDHIST MONKS". Interestingly while celebrating such national heros, not even one monk ever decries the young man who inflicted suffering on his enemies, to sustain freedom for his people!!
So Buddha's claims against suffering is a very ill informed, and foolish interpretation of life.
Buddha was in complete error to claim that "DESIRE" is the cause of all evil. So practicing detachment/ and extinguishing of life is goal. This is a very foolish and fatalistic hopelessness not enlightenment.
Because, even Buddha could not hold back "HIS DESIRE" (Even after enlightenment) to go out and keep telling everyone about "killing desire". He tried to make a joke out of human life and value. "Desire" in itself is a good faculty of human life which can have a good purpose if trained in "good" direction. And the LOVING GOD who created us, - himself had a good desire behind creating us, and he wants to produce that goodness from out of us.
No doubt even the most sophisticated RIMPOCHE/ MONK , still uses the best of the cars, best of the hotel arrangement and best of gadgets for their survival in this current world. But don't these Rimpoches and monks understand this basic one reality -? That these equipment they LIKE USING today is the result of "DESIRE" POPPING UP IN SOME ENTERPREUNERS MIND TO PRODUCE A "GOOD PRODUCT" !!
So these people also demonstrate that they agree there are many products of "GOOD DESIRE" out there useful and to be entertained.
Now any modern monk who brings a twist in interpretation of suffering and desire to justify their life habits, are simply contradicting the CORE OF WHAT BUDDHA said. They are anyways NO MORE following Buddha verbatim.
So by demonstrating these contradictions in life, anyone who follows BUDDHA is living a lie. FOLLOWING AFTER FABLES AND MYTHS.
Turn to JESUS the only hope who both forgives your evil and converts your desire into ability to "desire good" ; Welcome JESUS into your life and see the results.
