That really helped me understand meta modernism. Do we loose the narrative thread if there are too many alternatives pursued? I found 'Everthing everywhere...' a bit too much. I liked the way 'Spiderman No Way home' brought in all the old villains and alternative film versions of Spiderman and 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' met other versions of himself and other universes. Are we 'going Meta' because we realise we aren't going to meet aliens as they are too far away if they exist at all, so all we have are the other universes reflections of ourselves?
Damien I’ve really appreciated all of the videos I’ve watched of yours since discovering you a little over a week ago, but this one might just be my favorite so far. I’ve been writing a character since 2015 and never quite knew where he fit in literature, but after watching this I’m beginning to think he might just be meta-modern. I’ve found loads of insight in your work, but it’s particularly nice to be able to see what it is I myself have been trying to get at, since the awareness of it makes it a conscious act rather than an accidental one. Thanks for that.
Thanks. It's fascinating that metaverse type movies are coming in twos these days. Last year it was The Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All at Once. This year Across The Spiderverse and The Flash.
I’m struggling a little with this post-modern to meta-modern thing. If there are multiple narratives, but we don’t say they are all equal, so we have to choose a good one, how do we determine what is good? It seems to me either we come up with some unifying theory of what is good, which seems a pre-modern grand narrative in its own right, or, we pick one just because we happen to like it, but that then seems relativistic and therefore post-modern?
I think about it as a return to pre-modern meaning with a healthy amount of postmodern self-awareness. Like a mechanic who deconstructs a car, fixes some issues, and then reconstructs the same car with better performance.
I loved this movie it gave me everything I ever wanted and seeing my girl mayday Parker spidergirl finally adapted in animation makes me so happy that I am super excited to see more of her in the future also yay seeing Miles Morales Spider-Man and spidergwen become a couple in the future is really awesome that I cannot wait for beyond the spiderverse it’s going to be amazing at least in my opinion, also another bonus seeing miles morales Spider-Man prove everyone they are wrong is really awesome and of course another thing i love about this movie is that i got to see peter parker and mary jane have there daughter mayday parker spider-girl and having her help her dad made me so happy that i cannot wait to see her and spider-Gwen try to save Miles Morales is going to be really awesome and badass in my opinion.
As a fan of Integral theory it's so great to hear about metamodernism. I wish more resentful modernists of whom despise post modernism could learn about metamodernism. Then you can discern the high and low sides to these value systems.
Love this one ❤❤ the integral reflection and modern myth are the best content I always look for in this channel. I think this is your niche in RUclips commentary and you do it so well 👍 keep it coming ❤️❤️
I wonder if Marvel are going to do this again with a meta-modern live-action X-Men film by integrating the old X-Men 97 cartoon into MCU canon. And given what you're getting at here Sony blew it with Madam Web. At least they did not use Jessica Drew the first and best Spider-woman.
Metamodernism: We choose our stories, so we better choose a good one. This is a good move, not unlike Glasser’s “Reality Therapy” applied to narrative. The problem, however, is in the word “good”. What publicly agreed criteria do we have for “good” which will allow our stories to be good for our society, and not merely for selfish individuals? If my “good” entails your harm, and I have the power to enforce my good over yours, what can arbitrate that? Is goodness merely measured by who has the biggest gun?
Great Essay... HAHAHA Meta-Modernism easy explained... Kudos... // Spider-Verse was Mind blowing... A Bildersturm... a iconoclastic piece of Art... because they were not after our Money... like Bird's "My Iron Giant" before or everything by Studio Ghibli's Miyazaki-san... or everything by LAIKA of Kubo and the two strings.... (A must see btw.) I subscribed to your Podcast on Apple IOS... thanks for your Work... to educated...
Modern is narrative blind. It sees no value or importance in narratives. Metamodern is narrative aware, like pomo, but sees the possibility to choose optimal narratives and honour them.
Modernism is simple. A rebellion against the complexity of the past and the rules set by our predecessors. think Jazz compared to Classical. Post-Modern is a rebellion against the rebellion taking the absence of structure to it's conclusion, exposing the structure and purpose still present in modernism. Jazz plays with timing, but it's still adhering to rhythmic structures. 3/4, 4/4, 6/4, and playing between them. Postmodernist music might throw that out the window entirely. 4 instruments on disconnected solos. japanese bands recording albums out of burps and groans. Modernism still had a destination in mind, but suggested the straightest path might not be the best, and that it was about the journey. post-modernism suggests, if it's about the journey, we dont' need a destination, we can just drive for hours in circles and still enjoy ourselves. meta-modernism is a return to form, we're bringing back destinations and rhythm. we need direction in life. but we are no longer blinded. where classical had erased the past by preaching the pure and the correct, modernism's rebellion was unaware of WHY it needed to play with rhythms and routes. modern says "i am the captain of my soul" as a clap back to classicalism. meta-modern says it because it's the only truth there is.

Yes, that's part of it. Our imagination is adapting to no longer having a "future". We can't go forwards, we have to go sideways.
What a great explanation of Meta modernism and great movie choice!
This video is something else alright... You've been killing it lately!

Criminally underrated essay. Commenting and sharing for the algorithm.
Keep up yhe good work, sir! Im.on love with your channel!

I enjoyed your video, such great insights but it left me on the edge of my chair as if you almost solved the meaning of life! lol
I would love to hear your proposition how Star Trek could transition to a meta-modern narrative.
If this doesn't get 100,000 views than we need to have an excorcism of the Algorithm
Does Bruce sterling touch on this concept with his notions of atemporality because to my ear they sound similar
Lay out the case for it
Another trait of our meta modern world is how we tend to way overuse particular words... like take the word meta for example....
I’ll wait till it streams and definitely curious about this one
It's very worth seeing on a big screen.
EXCELLENT

That is the central question dogging our entire civilization. Answers on a postcard.

You really should have 1M subs, if you were a stock, I'd invest! Great stuff. Thank you, Professor.
Look again in about...18 months ;)
Amazing
Best movie ever.
I'm biased
they tear down your heros because the real controllers dont want you getting any ideas
I don't understand the functional difference between modern and metamodern. Don't both conclude that "I am the captain of my soul"?

@@patrickparadis8623 A poetic description, thank you!
The question is; what makes a good story?
Is that the question?
