Fantastic interview. Johnny Vegas/Michael Pennington has such a talent for being at once raucously funny and debauched and incredibly sensitive all at the same time. Its a shame so few people have bothered to pay attention for more than 5 minutes to realize Johnny is actually a brilliant performance and not just some rambling drunk having a breakdown, even if that line is blurred. So many people are apt to write Johnny off on first appearances, but listening to Michael talk for 5 minutes its obvious what a razor sharp mind he has.
This was absolutely wonderful to watch. So honest, sometimes tragic, and really funny, too. I'd genuinely love to see Michael Pennington do a show about Johnny Vegas and all the emotional issues he had with the character. He could call it "Fear and Loathing in Johnny Vegas". (You're welcome.) Going to watch this through again. Brilliant.
That was brilliant, found out loads I didn't know about JV and also laughed numerous times. Thumbs up to Herr Herring for interesting questions and letting Vegas speak at length. Great stuff.
Funny, I just said exactly the same things sharing it on Facebook. I love them all, but this is Herring's best interview by a mile, leaving perfect space for his thinking and freewheeling. Much more interest in MP after watching this, I never really knew Vegas was a character. So odd, like listening to a schizophrenic.
I have just laughed harder watching this than when I watch actual comedy shows that i love. His real life should be made into a series, he is a wonderful raconteur . Thanks to Richard for just allowing Johnny to do his thing.
don't worry Rich we all skip straight to the 7- 8 minute mark, thanks for the handy tip though, love the series so far it really cheers me up for an hour and 20 minutes of my depressingly monotonous life. :-D
Has to be my Favourite session yet (followed by Bob Mortimer, Simon Munnery, Steve Coogan then Louis Theroux in 2, 3, 4 and 5) Mike/Johnny is Fantastic in this, had me laughing throughout the entire legnth: Really a Brilliant, genuine Comic Soul. - Really enjoyed Riches courage in just sitting back without attempting to mould a false cohesion to the proceedings. NiceOne!
I knew Johnny/Michael briefly during his sojourns in Ireland during the '90s/20s... (Very nice, kind bloke, totally devoid of any obvious ego, which is unusual with comedians... And, for a lot of performers, ego is a necessary 'tool' to channel a certain energy.) Johnny, as I remember him, suffered really seriously from pre-stage nerves. He was often terrified before going on... Any indication of that vanished once he stepped onto a stage. Indeed, I thought he used that 'nervous energy' in a very unique way. (I think the heavy drinking, a trait we shared, was an attempt to calm his nervousness more than anything else.) He seems over that now? Brilliant to see him here in a great interview by RH. xx SF
I went to school with Mike, and 6th form, and art college. he is WAY funnier as himself than he ever was as his alter ego. when he told me he'd created this character for comparing at the Citadel in St. Helens. I was like, thats not going to work. but what do I know hahaha
Just found these interviews and have been binge watching! Fantastic talk with Johnny Vegas/Michael Pennington, a great insight into the man, I like him even more than before!
I love Johny so much. His honesty and transparency is so refreshing. And the way he talks about himself in the 3rd person.not many people realise that this is the comedians comedian
Loved this one well like them all but Johnny is great just watching his Ideal box set for like the 5th time not including when it was shown and repeated on the TV, and this was brilliant thanks for the upload
I love Jonny Vegas, best comical commentator about, well in my opinion he is #lovelightlaughter/movement, self deprecating humour is one of the most difficult sense of humour u adjust to, its nothing u can teach its inbreed, simple positive behaviour in a sarcastic yet truthful observations with no perceptions of others just reacting to them and taking the piss, love it

Thanks for putting something good on the wwweb! .....For FREE!!
A surprisingly serious RHLSTP (RHLSTP) given the guest. With a little bit of poo thrown in for good measure. That's what I love about this podcast. That's why I'm a fucking idiot.
Fantastic interview. Well done Richard Herring. I bet you'd have loved to have asked George Carlin the "HYETTSYOC" (as the cool kids are calling it) question?
So interesting and funny! I didn't realise Johnny wasn't his real name (I guessed the second name was made up). And only one emergency question used right at the end, impressive lol
Emergency Questions are worst part of the show ,try harder R.H. THEY ARE ALL COMICS GET THEM TO TELL JOKES if your stuck . still love the show though .
Yeah, maybe he's reaching some point of personal synthesis about the Mike / Johnny thing now, at this mid-point in his life. I really hope so - good for him, he's always been a real comic original, and seems like a genuine decent Human being, imo this interview was so moving, AND funny! 😸_👍
so interesting , I never knew all this , I feel like he created Jonnie to help him deal with what happened at school , and he still seems to be dealing with it , well done for getting sober and best of luck for the future , I cant think of another way you would get all of this from someone like Jonnie , great interview RH
He's not 'got sober', It's a character that he plays brilliantly. I think it's quite disrespectful to him and his comedic creation to suggest he was an alcoholic.
@@samgarrod4781 took me 5 seconds to find this quote "Back in the late 90s the St Helen's native would down two bottles of vodka a day to bring out his inner Johnny and tipped the scales at 18st."
@@StellaKnights Yes. I apologize. I've read his autobiography twice and I looked at the pictures. But he still drinks. I should perhaps have said is an alcoholic. Sorry.
Johnny has something that a few comedians don't or didn't seem to have. And that is an awareness of where 'the line'actually is. Doing offensive things on stage that only impact on yourself, is never going to be anywhere near as career fatal as abusing someone else for laughs. However funny that joke may be. Frankie Boyle and Julian Clary take note.

At secondary school I had a bag that had Mobil Oil written on it that my grandad got free with something. I had the piss taken out of me every single day until i wrecked it and eventually got a new one.
Fantastic show and I'm glad he is loving on from the "Johnny" character. Michael Pennington is naturally very funny and Johnny Vegas is (having seen a display of him abusing an audience member during a stand-up set) cringeworthy and embarassing.
Odd to call him JV at the end, after everything Michael said about putting him away and wanting to be done with him , but a really enjoyable conversation nonetheless.
