A tribute video to the ‘King of the Roads’ Joey Dunlop OBE MBE. Joey first saw the course in 1976 as he set off for his first practice - he went home with two replicas. The first of his record breaking 26 wins came in the 1977 Jubilee Classic Race.
He won the TT Formula 1 Race six years in a row between 1983 and 1988 and was Formula 1 World Champion five times.
He is the only rider to have three hat-tricks to his name - 1985 F1, Senior and Junior, 1988 F1, Senior and Junior and in 2000 the Formula One, Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight.
He has lapped the course at over 110 mph in races 256 times and has more 120mph plus laps to his credit than any other rider in the history of the races. He started in 100 races on the TT course, 98 TT and two Classic MGP Junior Races.
His astounding record of successes speak for themselves. Altogether Joey’s 26 TT wins include 7 Formula 1, 4 Senior, 3 Junior, 5 Lightweight and 5 UltraLightweight Races, plus the 1977 Jubilee Race and the 1980 Classic 1000.
During TT2000, at the age of 48, Joey counted the magnificent win in the Duke Formula One as one of his most rewarding. In his final lap of the TT circuit - the sixth lap of the Senior Race - he set his fastest ever lap at 123.87mph to become joint fourth fastest man around the course.
Joey was killed in a racing accident in Estonia in July 2000 and the world mourned the passing of one of the greatest motorcycling legends of all time.
He will be remembered for his skill and determination to win, his humility and kindness, and his warmth and sense of fun. The flash of that famous yellow helmet as he raced by is gone but the legend of Joey Dunlop will live forever.

He'd be 70 this year. I don't care what anyone says, we will never see his like again. Born to race the roads. Humble and not seeking fame, he was the smoothest , most consistent rider ever. Talent beyond words, and a true gentleman.
Jesus you have said that so well I am honestly in tears A TRUE GENTLEMAN A real human without any bullshit such a shame many more so called super sports men/women don't follow his example !!
Michael Dunlop
I went to TT in the mid 90's and after about 20 bikes had passed I said to the couple of blokes standing next to me ," He was definitely faster than the others" .... to which one of the guys replied,"Aye that was Joey Dunlop". .... that was the first time I had ever heard the name and over years has researched and watched videos and what a remarkable man he was. His legacy will live forever.
From a 250 2 stroke, to the 500 2 stroke, to the 1000 4 stroke, he owned the roads, he owned the competition,he was the master. HE WAS THE KING of the road courses. Balls the size of a whale, the HEART that was even bigger. RIP JOEY we miss men like you, they just do not make them like you anymore, they lost the die to cast men like you today. DUNLOP FOREVER
So sadly missed. 14 Years ago still seems like yesterday. Was always a privilege to watch him race. Didn't matter what he raced or what position he was in, if you saw that yellow helmet flash by, you somehow cheered more for him than the race leader. Feeling those tiny little butterflies in your stomach every time..
The best video of the world...Joey dunlop ...
They broke the mould after Joey was born. A man of distinction, ride forever Joey.
You might want to check out Robert, William and Michael as well... None of them, or anyone else has surpassed him - but I would like to think they have/had the same drive, and once someone like Joey set the standard, it would be hard to beat, both on and off the circuit. His family has been going strong ever since, though, so I would like to think that the mould is not completely broken after all. I think of all the Dunlops as top class racers, and top class guys otherwise - just normal, down to earth lads giving it all they've got.
The man was bigger than the sport itself. He was, is my hero.
Joey was unique in sport. He went to the top of his sport and remained the same quiet humble man he had been from the beginning. He was as happy testing a bike on the roads around Armoy as he was standing on the TT rostrum. Unfortunately, we will never see his like again.
I've posted this comment elsewhere, but I'll happily re-state it...
"Ah, the immortal Joey Dunlop. The wizard. The legend. The master. The quiet genius. Never forgotten".
1.06min-1.09min dressing his own pistons. What a legend
Sat beside his 250cc the other week and it felt so nostalgic but amazing R.I.P joey
22 years today, 2/7/22 road racing lost the king of the mountain, a true humanitarian as well as a demon road racer, we miss you Joey x

I just saw that movie, before then I'd never heard of the Dunlop's. What an absolutely fascinating story!
+Charles Anderson sounds like I know what I'm watching tonight.
speedyboolooks Me also. I've been a big fan of road racing since I was 12yrs old. I'm 27 now enjoy watching Joey on DVD reviews. I've got every tt review from 1985 to the present day, but my favourites are 1985-2000
they did a great job with 'road' to those who haven't seen it look for it it is on netflix
Legends never really die, they find a special place in everyone's heart and live forever
How very true !
'legend' is too small a word.
Hero icon goat best great it's the only word we humans can muster for a hero that gave all to the pinnacle of the greatest show on earth legendary stellar incredible impossible I agree legend is too small great champion the only word truly fitting for the life long legacy of a hero champion is LEGEND he is LEGEND RIP brother thank you for your inspiration and expression of love
Joe Dunlop, what a guy. He's still talked about all over the world, I was talking to an old buddy of mine at Road America back in June and Joe's name cropped up. Boy you sure didn't ever know how many lives you touched and continue to influence. RIP 3

Number 3 on the bike but number 1 to all his fans and people who got inspiration from him... Yer man
1:20 says it all about the passion!!! Don't see these nails anymore.
Very very true
I thought the exact same thing, as l watched it.
Words cannot explain the love for this man. Race in paradise road legend. ... go michael dunlop md racing
joey Dunlop was a legend in every sense of the word, a very quiet man but when he was racing he had a skill that was extraordinary, I was fortunate to see him race at the skerries road races like many other people not forgetting Robert Dunlop either, when the 125 race was on both joey and Robert would be battling it out, it is good to see the legacy continue with William and Michael Dunlop and joeys son Gary taking up racing as well,
Joey, poetry in motion.
Joey and Steve Hislop, my two favourite Racers, both Gentlemen in the paddock and away from.
A pure sports man not like todays lot "just a joke" R.I.P Mr Dunlop hope the racing is still as good where you are !!!
Was there ever a rider more loved than Joey? Sorely missed. So nice to see this footage.
Their hasn't been or will never be another rider like Joey Dunlop .
JOEY DUNLOP FOR EVER!!!!!
I've typed it before and I'll do it here-----I'm twice as tall as HE is, and 1/4th the man!!!! ( i think i typed half the man, anyway...) If i could be just a little bit as nice and kool and as good of a person and rider, WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD I WOULD LIVE IN!!! I never met him or knew him, AND STILL I MISS HIM EVERY DAY----and STEVIE RAY VAUGHN!!
Cheers to all good people!!! From 'trapped in north Dallas Texas' July 14, 2019
The King
What a great man and racer
There will never be another
Joey dunlop
Joey will always be my hero....
There are a handful of certain people who elevate motorsport past technical advancements and fast lap times and make it into a true work of art, Joey Dunlop is one of the few on that list for me
I play Suzuki TT Superbikes in my old PS2 and I'm gonna use Honda VTR 1000 SP1 in Formula 1 TT race because of Joey. It's gonna be tough against younger and more powerful bikes but it should be fun lol just a little tribute to the King of Road.
If Michael Dunlop was to break Joeys record this year I would still think Joey will always be the king of the mountain he was just yer man. For ever long live the king.
didn't see like this legend till now it seems he will never repeat
23 years today……. What a loss to our sport and to his family, we will never forget you Joey ❤

An amazing life, true legend.
No me canso de ver este vídeo...si ,dicen q el destino de cada persona está escrito, ese día la muerte tenía q haber mirado en otra dirección y haber podido seguir viendo a este rey de la velocidad...
Many riders today would shun the little machines like the 125/250 but this man made em fly. He's probably quicker than a average Joe on a litre twist and go.
Respect.Brave Man.
One of the best riders ever and nobody will better his records
Lovely tribute
Joey will never be surpassed. There has been many one off road racers including a favourite of mine David Jefferies he set the new style for the TT he was unbelieveable on the R1 and Gsxr 1000 immense ability but Joey was a one off there will never be another like him again. Fixing his own bikes driving to meetings and being humble. As goes for DJ he was also one off and legendary two of the best there ever was or will be no matter what RIP JOEY AND DAVID
