  • Being poor and on benefits in the UK can mean surviving on very little money - now the United Nations rapporteur on poverty has come to the country to investigate just how severe a problem it is.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The United Nations rapporteur on poverty has, in recent times, reported on extreme poverty in countries including Ghana, China, Mauritania and the USA. At the end of this week, Philip Alston will conclude a 12-day, fact-finding mission to the UK to see for himself what it means to survive on very little money in modern-day Britain. Here at a standing invitation from the government, he is hearing accounts of food banks, benefit delays and low pay. We have been to the north east of England and Essex to meet some of the people for whom making ends meet is a difficult and daily struggle.

Millions of people are living in medieval of type poverty in UK. They cannot afford new clothes , shoes and healthy food anymore. The landlords are ripping off the poor tenants and extortionate public transport fares have forced many people into using bicycles for commuting to work. The level of people’s happiness and feeling of security has reached its lowest level and eveyone is worried about the future. Housing prices have gone up so absurdly that owning your own property has become a dream. Everyday the situation is becoming worse and worse and more and more people are falling below poverty line. This situation cannot carry on any more.

Well said. If the wealth is not enough to sustain everyone, maybe rich people could start working to help and spending a little less. We need to make a worldwide strike of a month, and while that, get things free in the great shops, Walmarts and others. One of the problems is that the capitalism is synchronized in stock markets and fluxes of capital at the bank and financial system, but the indignation of people is fragmented and disconnected: now Hungarians are in the streets to fight slave work, but Gilets Jaunes are losing force in the French streets. We are very out of rhythm, we really need a worldwide synchronized, organized and cheerful demonstration to the corporations and their politicians that we, the people, have the power, like an Olympic Games of Citizenry and Ambiental Defence. Waiting for the Progressive Alliance, Diem 25, Sanders and Corbyn all take to the power and not have fear of the radical changes will be needed to save us all.

It’s happening everywhere in the English-speaking world.
A person on minimum wage in the States has to work 16 hours a day, 6 days a week just to pay the rent on a modest 1 bedroom apartment. 63% of people couldn’t find a thousand dollars in an emergency, 50% earn less than thirty thousand dollars a year and hundreds of thousands of working people have to live in their cars, tents, vans etc.
What’s it going to be like in another ten years? Better or worse?
And all the while, the gap between rich and poor will have grown immeasurably bigger than the current obscene level.
And Jeff Bezos will be worth 300 billion dollars by then while many of his fulfilment centre workers will still be on food stamps.
    Disgusting.

It takes the right kind of leadership, wanting to help humanity and not just make deals that enriches only themselves . Working is not always an option for some people , there are many obstacles , still they should have access to fullfilling basic needs . 1. I work full-time (40+ hours)
    2. My missus works part-time (20+) and full-time mum on top of that.
Yet we struggle to meet all the bills (and we're modest creatures) universal credit tops us up! Just think about that! What more can we possibly do yet we're seen by the government as needing help. This system is ridiculous!
Surely the answer is in the wage gap, how can 1 man/women be worth 10 of someone else? Well that's what is reflected in pay.
But no need to worrie if you're lucky enough to be part of other half, the system is working great! 👍👍

As I was forced to take advances which I'm still paying back monthly, whilst waiting for the benefit to be processed and paid, there was nothing DWP could do to help me to survive the month! I've had to beg and borrow from family & friends. My kids didnt get xmas presents this year.....how can this be right?

One thing we simple cannot ignore. The U.K has the the Number ONE richest city in the WHOLE of Northern Europe and at the same time it has the poorest NINE out of Ten, honestly just think about that, out of all of the Northern European countries we have the top nine worse off areas while having the richest. There is enough money to go around we just need more distribution and to stop companies who don't pay there fair share - Amazon, Google, Caffe Nero, Vodafone, Gap, Waterstones, EE, Boots, Apple, McDonald’s, Vision Express, Starbucks, THOMAS COOK, They all pay little to none Tax into the U.K Economy and make Millions and some cases Billions of profit here.
There is enough to go around just need a Policy in place and someone who isn't in the pocket to actually start making a difference in the country or the people of the U.K Will continue in this disaster.

When you don't have a job whether it is because you are lazy or because of bad decisions or because of medical, you have to accept that things are going to change and you will have to give up certain luxuries and most everything today that you think is a necessity is actually a luxury. The UN is neither use nor ornament. Unless of cause it's allowing illegal immigrants to enter other people's countries. In December, Theresa May will sign the UN Migration Pact: the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. This means the UK will not have full power to decide who comes into our country. The US, Austria, Poland and Hungary have refused to sign. The UK should do the same.

Equality was not mentioned once in this entire report. The fact the majority of assets are owned by a smaller and smaller number of people every year is why every country is facing these exact same issues. Economic Power, Politics and the manner in which governments and their idea factories (NGO, Think Tanks, Policy Institutes) measure and divide responsibilities (tax/regulations) and success is in complete imbalance. If the 'systems' we look to saw a greater value in people (and families) and governments actually seriously looked to items such as safety nets and infrastructure with an eye on ensuring equality was something taken seriously there would be much less poverty and stories of individual and community successes than we currently have in the world.
When is enough actually enough. GDP, you're having a laugh. Profit over people and a fidicuary obligation to shareholders over communities in which companies operate needs to be addressed. But no, let's blame the 2008 crash, caused by whom and what again? And how many people went to gaol for those predatory profit making practices...well yeah we see the problem. Money speaks louder to power than people.

No heating little food clothes rotting etc. Electric cut off regularly. No food banks back then, no one to help. Even social services didn't help and I had a baby sleeping in a damp flat with thick mold all over the walls, and I just kept getting one infection after another. We all had chillblanes all over our hands and feet. I'm glad that there are at least food banks nowadays. We were the hidden poor back then.
