By sheer volume, Way more really good music came out of the 1960's than any other decade. And by sheer volume, All of the music of the 60's is still immensely more popular.
As a teenage girl at that time I was annoyed at the screamers!!! I wanted to hear the music and admire the grown men on stage!! I never understood the need to scream and cry! And I loved all of them...American and Brits...good music is universal! :-)
The Byrds covered 7 of Dylan's songs and while the late Gene Clark was the father of The Byrds, it was the synergy of Clark, Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn that was the beating heart while McGuinn's 12 string electric Rickenbacker and their great harmony created the signature sound. Along the way came David Crosby and later, in the Rockabilly years, Graham Parsons. Many, including myself, believe that they were the best 60's band to ever originate out of L.A.
On this day in 1965 {May 11th} the Byrds made their national TV debut and performed this song on NBC's "Hullabaloo"... Four days later on May 15th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100... And on July 22nd it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... "Hullabaloo" aired for 20 months; from January 12th, 1965 through August 29th, 1966... *** "In the jingle, jangle morning!" ***
God's own music. God's own group. God was I lucky to have been a teen at that time. God awful the music of today and the idiots think it's great. Poor fools.
my mum has just passed over and this was the first record she bought for me, along with a dansette record player. i played it every night for ages. thanks mum. love you so much.
The first time I saw the Byrds was at a small informal event, at a catering hall called the Carolina Pines, off Beverly Blvd in Hollywood. It was a small party/event. I was a senior high school. This was 1965, sometime in May. I remember how different they sounded. I had never hear 12 string guitars before. I was mostly into jazz and classical music and didn't pay a lot a attention to them.Bbut, i liked them. in was only a few years latter when i realized i they were the Byrds.
One of the most important things the Byrds did back then, in performances like this one, was to bring the new styles of hair, clothes, and music back to the US. Before this, all of that was an English thing. Soon after this, young men all over the US started growing their hair long and being freaky, and the true sixties got underway, in '65 or so. Jim McGuinn was SO cool at that time, and the Byrds were America's first true answer to the Beatles. Of course, we loved all the bands back then, nobody much cared where they were from. It was such an ecstatic time to be alive, there was so much happening that was new, and we were acutely aware that we were making history. It used to be a lot of fun to be with a group of longhairs passing thru a small town in the Midwest or wherever: "Hey girls! Y'all sure look perty!" They didn't mess with us too much, though, because we started standing up to these bullies by '66 or so. Most of us knew how to fight from going to high school in the early 60s, but we didn't want to fight if we could avoid it. Cops never protected us.
@SgtPepper9537 thats because the group broke up very early. perhaps youve heard of a little project called crosby stills nash and young. theyre still not the beatles but give credit where credit is due.
I love this song and i love also seeing all those teenagers going crazy for this high quality music. It seems so strange if we take in consideration all the shit our teenagers listen to today
Horrible person and drug addict that killed most of his friendships. He pushed Gene Clark out of the Byrds (the one holding the tambourine in the video) and a lot more ever since the 60s. Most recently, on his twitter he said "meh" about Eddie Van Halen dying.
@@QueenFan12 Jeez what a shame seemed liked a likeable person.. been getting into the Byrds recently and heard he's a douche. Just needed some clarity on the situation. Thanks.
@according2ed They are kids having FUN! Their personalities were just great! And the West is leading the world...to liberal democracy...and FUN! Get a grip.
@SgtPepper9537 There was not a war. The Byrds which was a great band was good. It did not matter if you think the british bands were better. But look at other bands also.
The Byrds didn't even come close to touching The Beatles. British Invasion... America Fights Back! I think England won that war. I mean come on not only The Beatles, but The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Animals, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds, and The Hollies, etc.
@LTF6161 A good Marxist would redact everything to economics. Every political thing happening is just a consequense of the economic basis. Saying that man is a political animal is the Aristotelian view (man is a 'zôon politikòn'). Although Aristotle also said that man is a two-legged featherless animal :)...
@DoctorBohr And a sexual animal, and a violent animal, and a peaceful animal, and a fun animal, and a hateful...You get the point. Of course if you want to redact everything to politics like a good Marxist that is your choice and on your own ideological grounds I won't argue w/ you;>)
Chris Hillman really seems to be carrying the rhythm with his bass playing. Crosby barely seems to play at all. I suspect this was an example of live singing over a piped in instrumental. Not uncommon for the time.
+DoctorBohr SiBorg Jonnie wasn't referring to the harmonies when focussing on the soloist. Oddly enough, you are actually agreeing about their poor performance! And what exactly was so bad about the Beatles' harmonies?
DoctorBohr Point taken about the 'can't sing' excessive claim. But then ditto excessive "shame" harmonies claim. The Byrds had a particular style/sound around their harmonies for their style of songs -- which was not what the Beatles were generally after -- it wouldn't have suited their songs. But the harmonies that they did use -- seem similarly effective. And I couldn't see anything the Byrds did 'shaming' or even outshining songs such as 'She Loves You' and 'Because' (spanning their early and later periods).
Best American band
My God, Gene Clark was beautiful.
the 60s were wonderful such a delight xxx jo

Ron Cromer I’m gonna vote for Love, but I hear you
You left out Clarence White.
@Musical Box I never said that. You’re replying to the wrong guy 😀
The Byrds make me so happy! :)
Just love the audience shots of everyone grooving to the music. Music that stirs the soul indeed.

today 1965 - still groovy
my mum has just passed over and this was the first record she bought for me, along with a dansette record player. i played it every night for ages. thanks mum. love you so much.
Gotta love that Rickenbacker 12-string!
If you did not live to experince the time when these guys were making their hit records it will be hard to explain the power their music had.

I think this performance was on the "Big TNT Show".
i love this song--
don't want to know how the blonde applause girl on 2:20 looks nowalive :D
but in the the 60's she was pretty sweet :))
Why all the hate on Crosby?? Can someone pls elaborate?
Horrible person and drug addict that killed most of his friendships. He pushed Gene Clark out of the Byrds (the one holding the tambourine in the video) and a lot more ever since the 60s. Most recently, on his twitter he said "meh" about Eddie Van Halen dying.

@CodeTwo2 I was not around but I see where you are coming from.Sorry i missed it though , looks like a more fulfilling age!
@JonaraDV well stated! :-))
I agree the Byrds don't touch the Beatles...or the Stones but they do beat Manfred Mann, the Yardbird, and the Hollies for crying out loud!
yes, convenience comes at a high price.
@Rubenbaraja333
Politics is economics by other means...or is it vice versa...or is that war? Or "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar":)

@according2ed
They are kids having FUN! Their personalities were just great! And the West is leading the world...to liberal democracy...and FUN! Get a grip.
@SgtPepper9537 There was not a war. The Byrds which was a great band was good. It did not matter if you think the british bands were better. But look at other bands also.
They did not write the song nor did they play on it & still got a record contract!
Momonoski ... idiot! McGuinn arranged the song the intro etc and plays the 12 string on the record! Get the facts right
Que música mais linda
The Byrds didn't even come close to touching The Beatles. British Invasion... America Fights Back! I think England won that war. I mean come on not only The Beatles, but The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Animals, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds, and The Hollies, etc.
the byrds and hollies both produced crosby stills and nash
Of course the Byrds were great! 8 miles high way better than any of the British Bands songs

Essa música do Bob Dylan é linda! O que aconteceu naquela época?
Era comum todas as bandas imitarem o estilo dos Beatles? kkkk
SEI LÁ SÓ NÃO ME TRAZ BOAS RECODAÇOES NÃO!
Good but no Beatles
I love this song but live it seems no one can sing really in this group.
MrHelios12 You shitting me??? Jim McGuinn is perfect in this version!
So sad these chicks that are screaming could care less about listenig to the band. It's a little distracting.
@dharmashooter Oh my god... they really don't make girls like that anymore. It's terrible.
@DoctorBohr
MIC? You been spendin' way too much time in school. Enjoy the babes and leave the politics behind...or you really will be Doctor Bore
Chris Hillman really seems to be carrying the rhythm with his bass playing. Crosby barely seems to play at all.
I suspect this was an example of live singing over a piped in instrumental. Not uncommon for the time.
Wrong, totally live
Oh goosh those girls are annoying lol, they're wasting their money if they're not going to shut their mouths and listen.
Hullabaloo live performance was better than this performance...i must say!!
an ego maniac. Can't stand that guy
I like the Byrds but the vocals on this video are terrible.
Superb song - but i just realised... they cannot actually sing at all - or at least the dude in the square glasses can't !
+DoctorBohr SiBorg Jonnie wasn't referring to the harmonies when focussing on the soloist. Oddly enough, you are actually agreeing about their poor performance! And what exactly was so bad about the Beatles' harmonies?

I honestly think this version is terrible, and bobs original is so much better
Don't like the Bryds for they just made the Dylan song become a quite cheap one, totally messed up.
Beautiful Americans.
