  • Hello everyone, Welcome to the Mountaineer Mall in Morgantown West Virginia. Opening in 1975, Mountaineer Mall would finally bring modern shopping to Morgantown West Virginia, and would be a major success! With anchors, such as JCPenney, Murphy’s Mart, and Montgomery Ward, Mountaineer Mall would the prime destination with several small shops through its halls. It would be doing so well, that it would get expanded in 1987, adding a Stone & Thomas anchor store, and a new wing. However, 1990 saw the opening of Morgantown Mall just 5 miles away, and it would really damage Mountaineer Mall. JCPenney would abandoned Mountaineer Mall for the new mall, and other anchors would also leave around this time. However, Walmart would come to Mountaineer Mall in 1994, and start a new era to make mountaineer mall more of a discount mall. However, that was short-lived, as would Walmart close in the mid 2000s, and mountaineer mall would basically be a ghost town. By 2008 Elder Bierman, the final anchor store would close. This would leave a very uncertain future on the property, until many of the spaces we get converted into office space, or used in many new uses. The mall would now be operated more as a business center, with many community services inside. Let’s take a walk through Mountaineer Mall and appreciate it 70s architecture!

What are your thoughts on Mountaineer Mall, and what do you think its future holds?

The doorway/corridor thing at 4:30 looks like an expansion almost (I haven't finished watching yet). But it reminds me of the transition between expansion and old on my high school. The store fronts immediately beyond the doors reminds me of Diagonal Plaza in Boulder Colorado.

Christmas time there was the best. They had the little train that went around in the middle where Santa was and Rudolph the giant talking head in the back that was actually kinda creepy yet we all loved it. lol We also saw E.T when it came out in the small theater. Ah the golden days!! The place was so packed with people back then it was hard to walk without bumping into people. Oh and can't forget Hot Sams.....The pizza pretzel was the best! lol

Yeah, they are interesting ways to repurpose vacancies.

Ngl, was kinda surprised seeing TeleTech in that mall. That call center anchors quite a few malls here in the Philippines both alive and struggling.
Nice video as always! I'm so glad it's getting some use rather than sitting there rotting away and under constant threat of the wrecking ball. I especially love that mirror ceiling fixture.

Yeah, it’s an interesting way to repurpose the vacancies, but I’m glad it’s working! Now the mall doesn’t have to sit vacant!

Since I've placed most of my comments related to the Mountaineer Mall, below you video about the Mountaineer Mall, let me add here that in the late 1980s, the restaurant inside the Mountaineer Mall was converted to a Western Sizzlin steak house....... also, the Social Security Service office was located inside the Mountaineer Mall ......I always thought that in the end someone was going to level the Mountaineer Mall and build a subdivision of detached family homes, the view is nice after all from the Mall's location ....but it never happened .......Mylan, a defunct and formerly mighty generic drugs Pharmaceutical company, placed their IT operation at the spot that was occupied by Walmart .......but I also noticed from a floor plan that you showed in this video, that Mylan had also taken over the spot that used to be JC Penney's and later Gabriel Brothers (the latter is a local off-price chain, like a local version of TJ-Maxx) ........overall, I'd like to say that it's not only the Mountaineer Mall that died, when Morgantown Mall opened its doors .......there are many other spots in Morgantown with empty retail or office space, because developers keep building new commercial facilities without bringing in too many new business to fill up the new space ......as a result, the existing business keep moving around, from the older to the newer and fancier looking commercial facilities, leaving usable commercial space empty, behind them .......Morgantown has 30,000 permanent residents, and 25,000 students ........in my view, this town needs to have 50,000 permanent residents and new business coming in, to take advantage of the available commercial space ......older is not necessarily ugly or bad .......the Mountaineer Mall is a good example ......it has lots of clean and well maintained empty commercial space that goes wasted

    Green Bag Rd, Morgantown
This mall was built around the time the interstate was put thru. Prior to then, the traffick flowed thru the cities and towns, supplying places like this mall, and main street shops, with a steady flow of customers. Unfortunately for the mountaineer mall, it came about in the midst of a changing time, which ultimately led to its failure. However, being situated so near Morgantown (the city has expanded and essentially encompasses the mall area now), it makes perfect sense for a small business center and office space.
Right down the highway, in Fairmont, they have converted the defunct Middletown Mall into a plaza, with storefronts having direct access to the parking lot, rather than foot traffick. It seems to be quite a success.

Ok, in 2019 I took a road trip from PA to CA and passed through Morgantown and picked up a postcard from there.
Yesterday I found that postcard and 'SILENTLY' put it on my fridge. I never spoke the name, no sound came out of my mouth.
Today I'm getting a Morgantown video in my recommendations. Google and RUclips have continually made creepy recommendations for things they Shouldn't know.

That’s actually quite odd. But I’ve had similar stuff like that happen to me as well. That’s interesting.
