    The biggest problem I have from standing up from turtle, having transitioned from wrestling to jits, is that there's never any forward pressure from turtle. By the time I defend the attacks, everyone just kinda falls off of turtle and I end up with a reversal.
    In jits, unlike in wrestling or mma, people will just fall back and literally pull you on top of them, which is a monumentally stupid idea in any rule set except for a jiujitsu tournament.

    In wrestling we focus on getting that inside leg out once we get to that forward sit out position. That’s the most important thing. The powerhalf is useless once you get that leg out. He shouldn’t be able to pull you back from that position unless you’re a total scrub.
    Also, first escape should be to get that inside elbow between you and “swim” him off. The way homeboy was hanging off the side with that leg in, you wouldn’t need to do the forward sit…he is more than halfway to his own him. The top man needs to ride him like a horse or he will fall off (his powerhalf was the only thing keeping him from falling off)

    • @JewishBettor

      You also dont have to worry about getting choked

    • @duketea_
      @duketea_ 9 месяцев назад

      The power half is definitely not useless once you get the leg out. He still has control of your neck (and shoulder) and can attack several submissions if you don’t clear that elbow.
      This is bias from learning wrestling first, and part of the point of this video is to show that different grappling styles complement each other, there is no one perfect system.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 9 месяцев назад

      @@duketea_ I always get a good laugh when people try to shame me for my time wrestling when I literally have trained Judo and Jiu Jitsu for years. There are successful ways to control people on the mat and unsuccessful ways to control people on the mat. A basic understanding of wrestling escapes and he is out of there. If someone is absolutely flat and you cover them with your hips, then the power half is ok. But if they have a base, you can so easily head shrug or swim out of it. Heavyweight wrestlers use a powerhalf all the time without legs, and as soon as the bottom man gets his base, he is out. It’s literally one of the first things that we teach wrestlers. A powerhalf or seatbelt grip without legs in is not a ride. You first stay under the arms and secure legs in. Then you can work the powerhalf or seatbelt. Without legs and it’s a joke to escape. Position before submission as the saying goes and without control (position) you have more prayer in submission. Several well known catch wrestlers talk about this exact thing. Barnett is one of them. Again this is from the knees. If he sits out, that’s a bit different because you can go to the bulldog choke, but my original reply on this post addressed the position being shown here, which is a person in turtle

  • @fightbreakdown885
    @fightbreakdown885 Год назад +44

    The "problem" is that BJJ should never be separated from Judo in the first place. For example there are many takedowns and PINS (to keep you from just standing up). The time for having all of these different grappling arts is over. There is only one grappling art which combines all of the most effective techniques of freestyle wrestling, greco, catch wrestling, sambo, etc etc you get the point. When I first started in BJJ (Im only purple belt), i thought it was funny that there are no take downs. All of the takedowns come from Judo or other martial arts. Then I learned the history of BJJ and realized why this was so, and at the same time how silly it is to limit your move selection to one martial art. Take from greco, take from sumo if you can find something and try it. No matter what don`t be limited. I love college wrestling; so I figured out how to turn single leg takedowns and leg laces into leg locks and knee bars, my own system. That's what this journey is about really. Find what works for your body type and your temperament. Just stand up works until you have a strong wrestler on top holding you down or a Judoka who has strong ground game and Pins. Great video, big fan, and would love to see this in practice from you Craig soon.

    The window of opportunity for top man is when he reaches back to secure arm.
    I was a leg rider my whole wrestling career.
    At that point, you'd simply take tour free arm to spear through the arm he's reach back with to break his grip, place that wrist behind you head and swim you near arm under his arm pit and pick up the head ....locking hands together for guillotine pinning combination.
    Eddie Bravo calls this the Twister.

When I first started attending Brazilian jiu-jitsu clubs I already had Decades of experience in wrestling and Judo so I would often just stand up then the BJJ guy would stop grappling and instruct me to come back down to the ground and continue grappling on my knees... it was many years ago when I figured out sport Brazilian jiu-jitsu was ridiculous yet for some reason people still think rolling around on the ground is awesome way to practice martial arts

      @@kallepikku4991 Wrestling works pretty well as a way to avoid jiu-jitsu, and either stand up or not go to the ground in the first place. Wrestlers are generally dopey, and don't perceive the sadness or irony in their grappling art being used merely as a method to avoid another grappling art, and to avoid grappling generally.
