On the subject of GPU upgrades, I have seen threads online that mention that Apple GPU BIOS files are available to download. Using a "Raspberry PI", you can flash a GPU card so that the imac will recognise that card as whatever BIOS you flashed it as. This will give you the boot screen, brightness controls etc. The problem is, I've only seen BIOS for the apple cards up to and including the Radeon 6970 2GB graphics card. If you want a GPU with higher specs than that AND you want the boot screen etc, then you somehow need to get a BIOS file for one of the later Apple cards. I know there was at least one macbook pro from 2018 that had an 8gb card - if someone can get a download of that BIOS then that would open up a whole range of possible GPU upgrades!
NicVandEmZ okay so I did some research on this and found out that from 2012 onwards, the iMacs used integrated GPUs instead of cards. The mid-2010 21.5” can accommodate an i7. It has to be either the 860S or 870S because their low power consumption is compatible with the power supply in this machine. Most people go for the 860S because of the price difference You also can put up to 32 Gb of RAM in these machines with those processors. There an extremely documented guide for this particular model. To my knowledge with the Late 2009/mid 2010 27" iMacs - 11,1 & 11,3 you can actually go up to i7 880 chips @ 3.06GHz. Several people have done this swap online and I'm about to do it myself!
@@arthurspringthorpe Thats very interesting, could you tell me please what imac you were upgrading to an i7 880? Was it a 2009 EMC 2374 27" imac by any chance?
@@Rendell001 Indeed! It's a 27" late 2009 iMac - 11,1- EMC 2374. It previously had the i5-750 installed from factory. A few other people have done this swap online too! Great video! My mid 2011 27” iMac AMD graphics card just went out (it was already replaced a time before, at an Apple store. This time I want to do it myself). I just need to get my machine back up into High Sierra, don’t care about Mojave or Catalina. And with one of these, I can boot back up into High Sierra with any black screen or problems. Also, if I just go in and replace the card do I have to worry about my data or do I have to figure out how to get my data onto another drive first. Your answers are much appreciated.
If you can get another AMD 5000 or 6000 Series card out of another iMac, then it will be just plug and play. No cutting, no bootscreen loss nothing. Also don't worry about data because it is stored on the HDD, so the graphics card has nothing to do with it. Your system should just boot up normally with the new GPU.

Hi guys, second question. I got a Imac 21,5 inch late 2009 and i want to upgrade my GPU. What is the max that I can go to. And what are the negative parts of it (and also the positive).
Max GPU for a 2009 is probably 765M. I say probably because in theory you could put in much faster cards such as 770M, 870M, etc but there have been reports of kernel panics because of the card's power draw being too high. The only downside is that you can't flash any of them for Mac on your system because the custom vbios needs core i3 or later.

Sounds like your GPU is failing; some people managed to get them back to life by baking them but that's only a temporary fix. For 25-inch iMac in mid-2010, what would be the best CPU and GPU upgrade? Thank you. You're the best
You probably mean 27". Best CPU is Core i7 870s (like I said in the video) and best GPU is a GTX 880M, but the 770M and 780M are already pretty fast.
I have a 27” mid 2011 and for GPU change you DO Need to remove motherboard because screw bolts are facing inside, so cannot remove from the front side. Greetings!!
Yes I know that now ;) If you like you can watch me struggle at exactly this with my latest 2011 iMac project.

Well that's great then. What do you plan on upgrading?
@@MacintoshMen ram is enough it came with 20gb ram but the i5 is ok but the graphics are getting for sure an upgrade

@@dnovom Not only can it fit just fine, but it runs great too. Better than any Novideo card. However the backlight is stuck at 0% so you have to mod that but you do get the EFI bootscreen with a VBIOS/BootROM mod (however now there is VBIOS only mod for the 765M/770M/780M cards)
I like the video, well done. What I like even more are the people asking questions you answer in the video :-D
Well that's because people are lazy and don't watch the actual videos. I'll stop answering these questions soon, because I am tired of telling people the same stuff I say in the vid and wrote down on the website.
It is now 2023. I have a mid-2011 27” iMac on high sierra with the i5 and 6750 graphics, SSD, and 32 Gb ram. Absolutely Love this machine. Am more than a bit pissed off lately because the graphics is super slow and “pagey”. I am learning this is a Mac ox software update issue. So am looking at GPU upgrade or a new machine.
I do not plan to change the OS.
Can I simply put in the 770m graphics and problem goes away? The machine is flawless otherwise.
I gues you can, yes. Maybe flash the vbios regardless.

To my knowledge with the Late 2009/mid 2010 27" iMacs - 11,1 & 11,3 you can actually go up to i7 880 chips @ 3.06GHz. Several people have done this swap online and I'm about to do it myself!

So my questions are: the two cards you showed on the screen would fit and work simply without any cutting etc.?

No, you can't install it from the App Store because you still have a officially unsupported iMac. You need to patch the install on there and it's a very tedious process without the bootscreen.
2 more questions: I read you can flash this card through Kepler beta3 VBios release by @Nick? And do you think can this machine run Catalina without any inconvenience? I got the iMAC27” Mid 2010 A1312, i7CPU, 1TB SSD, Nvidia GTX 765M, 32GB Memory Ran?
@@Colourlinetv If you can pull the vbios flash off, then yes it will run it pretty fast
Thank you to share with me your point of views!
Brilliant! Subscribed :)
hi, I upgraded my chip (CPU), added 16GB of Ram and changed the memory into SSD 500GB. I didn't expect to loose my boot screen and with that the boot loader. What can I do to solve that?
Hi.... Is posible changing logic board to imac 1312 core 2 to imac 1312 i7??
What is better for my 27" Mid 2011 GPU upgrade "Dell Alienware 17 R1" "Dell Alienware M17x R1"
"Dell Alienware 18 R1" "Dell Alienware M18x R1" or does it matter? Thank you
It doesn’t matter, as long it’s the same socket connector
Great informative video! I didn’t see you address any Mac fan control program questions. Would you be able to recommend what fan control program to use? I’m preparing to do and SSD upgrade and would like to know how to use the fan program in case it’s needed. Thanks.
I used a program called "SSD Fan Control". It's easy to use and it does the job just fine.
muchas gracias por la informacion
Can I use imac 2009 gpu for imac 2011?.
My imac 2011 gpu is dead and I wonder if AMD 4850m from imac 2009 will Work directly on imac 2011 without any modifications
Hi just I have a question? I watched the GPU upgrade tutorial what you did with the iMac mid 2010 but you choose a not flash nvidia GPU card, can I upgrade with a flash Ati Radeon 6970 2 GB card? is more expensive but I feel more comfortable with a flash card, my iMAC is the same model you used; iMAC 11,3 (Mid 2010) 27'' i7-870 @ 2.93GHz
The flashed card will just work plug and play, you'll have bootscreen and everything, however the Radeon 6970 does not support Metal. I upgraded to the nvidia because of Metal support.

Thank you!
I appreciate your advice, so there is not a metal support flash card for this unit to upgrade??
@@Colourlinetv If you can deal with a missing bootscreen, there are plenty like Nvidia Gtx 765M, 770M, 780M.. etc.
Can i put a 3GZ procressor in imac 9.1 in a 2009 model?
No
is my mid 2010 21.5inch imac campatible with just the i7 860 (not S!)
Im thinking about getting a 2011 imac do you think i can use imovie on it to video edit ?
Absoluteley
I have 2011 21.5 inch imac and make simple videos with imovie, publish to youtube weekly
It came with the computer, and I didn't really start using it until last year. I only added 4 gb of ram, although you can add up to 32 gb of ram even though apple says 16 gb ram
if you want to video edit, probably 8 gb ram is minimum ... when i had 4 gb, it was not best
last year i had to do video conferencing and videos ... one of those required ram upgrade, after that i was ok with 8 gb
but i'm probably going to upgrade to 32 because i can
Hi, i7 870s, is same i7 870? . I want upgrade iMac 21.5 2010. But im confused, im try to buy one. Tell me please thanks
No, it’s not the same. The 21.5 only works with 870S
Any updates on a late 2009 27 inch I want the best cpu and gpu I can get
It’s a 10,1
hey, is it possible to use GTX770M on bootcamp windows? you noted that after replacement there will be no boot screen. i think that bootcamp doesn't require boot screen, because you can choose booting drive while the system is still operating. does it work different when you replace apple's GPU with GTX?
and what about cooling and power consumption? have you notices anything that's worth keeping in mind? like overheating during certain process, crashing, going to safe mode or PCU failure?
It's a lot easier to upgrade these things on PC's. Me & my dad upgraded the RAM on our mac minis, & swapped the working hard drive from a mac mini with a broken motherboard with the hard drive from a mac mini with a broken hard drive(we had 3 mac minis, 1 had a broken hard drive & 1 had a broken motherboard, then we swapped hard drives, & we had 2 working mac minis & 1 with a broken motherboard & hard drive.
Mac minis were more upgradable from about 2009-2012.
HI I have imac 27 inch gpu failed , want to upgrade , is there any card for upgrade that does not need a flash to work?
Hi i have a late 2010 Imac 27" can you please assist with possible upgrades on that
