Saw you ran fiberglass first - I approves. :-) If it's a weld - bang on glass. No weld is ever 100% sealed, fiberglass seals 'em. Grab a 12" mirror tile from B&Q or wherever (or just a normal shiny tile) - bang, best mixing board ever & you can clean it with a swish of thinners so it stays spotless - no more mucking about looking for a mixing surface - also non absorbent so none of the juicyness leaks out of your filler. Lovely work btw - primer turned out mint.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration 12" mirror tile - thank me later - took 80% of the "PITA" out of mixing/cleaning up filler. Use the applicator to swish it off with some thinners - it'll come up spotless every time for years. Nothing sticks to it & you get close to no wasted material - mixing filler used do my head in as I'd always be hunting a fresh clean surface. :-)
Yes you are correct. If you watch the previous video to this you will see it’s bonded on to the inner arch and we advise that inside is waxoiled as well :)
really enjoying this channel! You make it look easy but I love these how to guides that show you just need to think about what your doing and take some pride in your work. love it!
Great work, I’ve learnt a lot from your videos 👍 I know this is an old one but hopefully you still see it. I see a mixture of people using epoxy primer or fibre glass first. Have you tried both and why is your preference fibre glass or do they both have their place for different applications?
Hi YCR fantastic video. really good wish Id discovered your channel years ago. keep them coming especially MK1 MX5 as I have one!!! where would I get the tiger paste, the rust treatment and zinc primer. got the gravi-tex sorted now cheers
any thoughts on using wurth Rust converter on metal before fillers/priming. Talking about phosporic acid based converter which has some polymer in it, when it dries it changes colour and leaves thin plastic like finish
Is there any chance I can get in contact with you please because I love my MX-5 and it needs some work doing on the arches and seals and I don't feel confident doing it myself but I'm amazed by the work you do and if you could do it I'd have peace at mind knowing it's been done properly and it's been done with care
Great job on this! one question do you mix once and then apply 3 coats of 2 pack primer in short succession from the same batch of paint, or do you have keep re mixing new paint to go in the bottle as you apply and re clean it if you get me ? cheers
What’s the relative cost of replacing a front wing vs the replacement of the wheel arch? Love watching you do this repair but it’s time consuming. Aren’t wings quite cheap? Edit: different question for front v rear wings, as latter is a complex thing that isn’t bolt on & off.
Would it be considered a better way to seal the bare metal and weld seam, from moisture, with an epoxy primer sprayed first and prior to using the short strand fiberglass filler? As a minimum, spraying self etching primer on the bare metal? Please offer an explanation of laying down the fiberglass filler first. Thank you.
Absolutely love your work but please use an airfed maskgloves. and plastic suit/. An element filter will not prevent the absorbtion of cyanide by your lungs eyes and skin.
Hate to be downer. Masks and if possible extraction. I am sure loads of young apprentices watch your channel and we won't them to pick up the good habits now.
great tips!
Thank you :)
What a wonderful way to fill an evening! - it's wonderful to watch filler being applied and used correctly - excellent video guys
Thank you Colin :)
Love the work you guys do and the Attention to detail is amazing 👍

Didn,t know there was water proof filler before , except resin and fibreglass on Boats ! Cheers yes enjoying !

Keep it up guys :D
😁👍
Thanks for showing the products you use...it really makes a difference to us ammeters
Hi Ian , we are glad our videos help :)
Superb profiling! Can’t tell it’s been done!
Lovely seeing it take shape, can't wait to see the difference from when I dropped it off to you! Thanks for all your work on it mate!
It will be a different car Dan :)
Remember to seal it from inside the arch... Many people forgets it, and the rust always starts from inside and out... 😊
Yes you are correct. If you watch the previous video to this you will see it’s bonded on to the inner arch and we advise that inside is waxoiled as well :)
He makes it look so easy...
Haha thank you Neil :)

Hi John :) you hit the nail on the head :) that is exactly what we are about :)
Excellent work and tutorial Steve... and boy, don't those MX5's rot away..😳🤔
Yes they do but we always get the worst as nobody else will tackle them and when they do they charge a fortune :)
Putty and Paint makes me the welder I ain't.
Just kidding, you are doing a great job 👍

Great tips, Sir. Thank You :)
No problems :) 👍

Yes Wurth rust converter is good :)
Do you also apply some filled, or corrosion protection on the inside of the wheelarch?
Is it also ok to first spray epoxy primer on the bear metal surfaces before beginning filler?
Yes I would use two pack epoxy, you would also have to sand down after it’s applied.

Hi yes you can contact us on instagram just search for Yorkshire _car_restoration. :)

Yes we do :) while it’s in a sealed paint gun it won’t go off for a few hrs.
Each layer is left to dry for about 20 mins :)

Edit: different question for front v rear wings, as latter is a complex thing that isn’t bolt on & off.
This isn't a front wing. This is a rear arch and it's not bolt on.
What gauge sheet metal do you gentleman use to fabricate panels for the miata?
We usually use 1mm for most applications but on structural sections can be up to 1.4mm

Because that’s how it’s done :)
Absolutely love your work but please use an airfed maskgloves. and plastic suit/. An element filter will not prevent the absorbtion of cyanide by your lungs eyes and skin.
what type of primer was that? etch, epoxy, or just some regular primer?
Epoxy 2 pack primer :)
Tozzing job
Dunno what that means but thank you :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Ha! It’s Yorkshire for good work.
