I got mine at guitar center for $99 each for the MX5...Very nice monitor, very flat with nice bass and highs, miss are excellent and you won't go wrong with these. They will remain my main monitor.
Got these at a pawn shop for 100 bucks for both. They sound good in my room I didn't know they were any good and could compete with job krk etc very happy to see this video my mixes ARE sounding better
This seems slightly more like an unboxing than a review. Would you recommend them? How about against other monitors in the same price range? I for one would really like to hear your opinions, and not play it safe like virtually everyone does ("I don't know what you think, and I'm not telling you what to do, but you might like these, or maybe you won't, dunno, whatever"). A lot of us are here BECAUSE you have an opinion, and one that is far more informed than most of us. ROCK ON!
Fluff, I own a set of 160W KRK Rokit 8" and they have no such boominess in the low mids. I have them hooked up to a QSC Touchmix 16 and they sound crystal clear for mixing
Thinking about adding these to my setup as a 2nd pair of monitors. But you gotta consider the Tascam VL-S3. Also for another $30 bucks or so you can get the blue tooth model. Subscribe to my channel. To find out what pair of monitors i end up going with. Peace.
Hey Fluff, I"m looking at the Sterlings, JBLs, and Tannoys for new 5" monitors. Any recommendation between the three? Everyone says the JBL's are amazing, but I haven't heard how tthe other two compare against them.
Anyone knows whether the 8" version overheats? A sales rep at Guitar Center claimed another rep from another store said folks were making returns because of it.
thank you fluff, i wanted to get an additional pair; i saw the mx3's and they come as pair. This would help me because can switch between a 5" inch speaker to 3" inch speaker whenever i need a reference. No need for some JLBs to be honest if you have 2 pairs. It would be really helpful if you could recommend a rack that allows me to switch interface speaker output signals since its a pain to plug and unplug every time i need to use different speaker.
Commercial speakers boost/cut certain frequencies for a supposed better sound. Monitors have a very flat frequency response, meaning they put out more accurate, less colored sound
Because they monitor sound. Just like a computer screen is called a “monitor” because it monitors graphics and video. However, searching for “computer speakers” and “studio monitors” will yield drastically different results. It’s more or less just jargon relating to specific applications but all of them are audio drivers.
Owned a set of the m audios before upgrading to Adams. They have some sweet sounding low end but they're mids are very scooped. They sound very much just like a casual hifi speaker you would get for a tv. They make things sound very hyped, but that isn't typically what you want from a main studio monitor. If your planning on using them as references they're passable.. Sort of. But they're lack of mids make it very hard to be accurate when mixing, you'll definitely be scrambling to reference them against other speakers to see if you got your. Levels right. As a mixing engineer your monitors are your lifeblood, I'd really recommend foregoing the m audios and saving for something more accurate. Cheers!
Ghost in the Machine Woah, thanks for the detailed reply! I've actually had the m-audio's for couple of years now, they are my first pair of nearfield monitors, and as I've gotten better with mixing, I've noticed the pretty extreme mid scoop too. The low end goes pretty far and is pretty detailed for a speaker in this price range. I've been on the hunt for better pair somewhere in the near future, as I now have pretty nicely treated room. Until then I'm using couple of different headphones as a reference. And of course, learning to know your room & gear and getting mixes sound good with what you already have is the premise before investing in new hardware.
+Arttu Häkkilä you've definitely got the right idea :) takes a long time to learn that. I saved and bought a pair of Adam p33a's as an upgrade. Biggest thing I've noticed is the mids are crystal clear and balanced. Also the leveling on the Adams is impeccable, I have been mixing on them for about a year now and trust them enough not to have to go out to the car and reference them anymore haha. But your right, above all else, knowing you monitors and your room will do more for you than an expensive upgrade will. And to the m audios credit their bass response is great for the price range their in. I've just noticed that some of the low mid frequencies are literally almost not even represented, which caused me massive headaches when it came to leveling. If you ever have the chance to stop by a store and listen to some high end monitors you try it, the first time I heard the Adam a7x's it was almost awe inspiring in comparison to my bx8s. Anywhere cheers man good luck with your music!
+Tube Screamer I have em at my store and I gotta say...if you can spring for the Yamaha's, get those. I personally have never really been a fan of anything Sterling but that's just me. The Yamaha's have much more clarity and are pretty transparent imo. Also, the HS8's are $100 more than the MX8's here so...ya lol
Maybe this video is sponsored. For $300 per pair, nothing beats the JBL lsr305's. The 5 inch version of these Sterling's are $300 but Jbl's 5 inch version are 82 vs 70 watts rms, clearer and the same price.
Heheheh. Had a guy ask me once if my studio had "any of them Newman mics"...and I mean he pronounced it like two words...New & Man. I had to deadpan my answer to keep from laughing out loud.
errr, no specs? frequency range, response, thd etc are a must for studio monitors. why is no one scientific about monitors? I need facts, numbers, not a description of the sound. muddy, glassy, wooly, shine, garbage. I hear alarm bells.
Sorry fluff but gotta disagree with you here, I have these at my store and aside from how loud they are, I don't really think they're anything special. I would say if you can spring for anything in the Yamaha HS series, go with those. If not, the JBL LSR series are pretty solid as well. Sterling gear has always just felt really cheaply made imo and honestly I don't really trust them.
Appreciate you saying $150 EACH. I've almost been sold on so many speakers before I found out that it was the single price not the pair
I got mine at guitar center for $99 each for the MX5...Very nice monitor, very flat with nice bass and highs, miss are excellent and you won't go wrong with these. They will remain my main monitor.
just bought a pair - Love them - they have a big sound. - got them for $325 on sale
Got these at a pawn shop for 100 bucks for both. They sound good in my room I didn't know they were any good and could compete with job krk etc very happy to see this video my mixes ARE sounding better
These are on sale at the G Center for 79 and 99 right now. I just ordered a pair of X5s.
This seems slightly more like an unboxing than a review. Would you recommend them? How about against other monitors in the same price range? Tried them in a store - the sounded better to my ear than JBL 308. I’m not a audio editor, just love quality sound. These things rock.
Now these mx5 come in black.
Just bought this of guitar center!
Where did you get that awesome ceiling lamp?
Fluff, I own a set of 160W KRK Rokit 8" and they have no such boominess in the low mids. I have them hooked up to a QSC Touchmix 16 and they sound crystal clear for mixing
I got the mx3 they good for $99

Subscribe to my channel. To find out what pair of monitors i end up going with. Peace.
Same here and o really don't have room for anything larger, I couldn't be happier with those speakers the clarity it's amazing.
Fluff...!! Have you tried the Yamaha HS series...?? The 5, 7 or 8??
Hey Fluff, I"m looking at the Sterlings, JBLs, and Tannoys for new 5" monitors. Any recommendation between the three? Everyone says the JBL's are amazing, but I haven't heard how tthe other two compare against them.
Your outro is great tbh, I hate loud outros
Well now i feel a bit awkward of having KRK Rokit 5's. Then again i'm new to this and fairly sure they work decent enough for now. Or??
I just got two Sterling MX5's for $130, brand new off of a dude from Offerup. These are SICK
I found a used pair of the mx8 do I need an audio interface or no ?
Anyone knows whether the 8" version overheats? A sales rep at Guitar Center claimed another rep from another store said folks were making returns because of it.
Short, sweet, and to the point. :)

¿Can you explain the importance of studio monitors, compared to headphones, home regular speakers, car stereo, etc?
+Codex Death Metal More accurate in terms of frequency response and stereo field.
Thanks for the info!
@0:46 When Fluff forgets these aren't M-Audios :)
Hah you called them 'BX5s' and 'BX8s' like the M-Audio range
+Thomas Hennessey lol maybe he's subconsciously dropping hints on himself!
Awesome :) great review
Are these any good for mastering? I'm starting out with it and I'm trying to find a decent set of speakers that won't break my wallet for now.
Sterling Audio MX's or Tannoy Reveal's?
Fluff, did you buy 4 different sizes or did they send each one to you to try? lol
I used to love this channel.
:(
Question. Why are they called 'Monitors' instead of 'Speakers'. Is there a difference other than just what you call em?
Commercial speakers boost/cut certain frequencies for a supposed better sound. Monitors have a very flat frequency response, meaning they put out more accurate, less colored sound
They may sound objectively worse, but will show how the mix really sounds.
Because they monitor sound.
Just like a computer screen is called a “monitor” because it monitors graphics and video.
However, searching for “computer speakers” and “studio monitors” will yield drastically different results. It’s more or less just jargon relating to specific applications but all of them are audio drivers.
Do you have any experince on m-audio bx8 d2 and if so, how do they stand against these? Considering those two are close by specs & price.

+Ghost in the Machine Thanks, I wish you all the best with your music too!
I'm happy with my krks
i love my Sterlings!!
$50 less than yamaha hs8, any thoughts compared to those?
+Tube Screamer I have em at my store and I gotta say...if you can spring for the Yamaha's, get those. I personally have never really been a fan of anything Sterling but that's just me. I'm sure many people pointed this out....but they are MX....not BX model names
Will we ever see Fluff play an 8 string guitar? 🤔
Sterling is just rebranded Nady, right?
it's a proprietary brand for GC and MF
I will give them a lookie-doo, since you said that!
Am I the only one just now realising Neumann isn't pronounced "Newman" but "Noyman"
Yup. The rest of us have known for a while. ;)
Worst part is, I know I've pronounced it incorrectly several times at various studios and retailers.
Heheheh. Had a guy ask me once if my studio had "any of them Newman mics"...and I mean he pronounced it like two words...New & Man. I had to deadpan my answer to keep from laughing out loud.
Almost no one pronounces German names with 'eu" or "ei" correctly lol...
Same goes for Neutrik plugs and sockets.
Is your brother the machine?
Too bad they have a rear-firing bass port. I have to have my monitors very near to a wall behind them.
errr, no specs? frequency range, response, thd etc are a must for studio monitors. why is no one scientific about monitors? I need facts, numbers, not a description of the sound. muddy, glassy, wooly, shine, garbage. I hear alarm bells.
they look massive 0_0
*That's what she said*
Do you mean MX...?
30 hz to 20khz and 118db volume
what u mean by bxa? lol. u didnt practice well for this video shoot.
I'm guessing you mean MX?
BX = M-Audio
GC closeout $79.00 ea.
You started this on a bad note by claiming they were a legit mic company.
😍😍
Español
Mx8 in guitar center for 139/ea thank me later
they are MX nor BX bruh but we get what you mean.. lmao
Sorry fluff but gotta disagree with you here, I have these at my store and aside from how loud they are, I don't really think they're anything special. Colin Myers agree. I went with event 20/30 and used m-audio DSM3. Sterling's just did not cut the mustard for with the imaging. Great mics though!
XDarkstarX Unknown Their mics are spectacular!
