I'm not a citizen of any of these 2 countries. But I'd say the blanket tariff imposed by Canada to the US goods is counter-productive. Especially when there are no viable alternative from domestic Canadian manufacturers / producers or from other friendlier countries. It only hurts Canadians consumers. Selective tariff would be a better approach.

As much I hate Tarrifs, and even question retalitory tarrifs, the entire world doing this soft sanction action against the US will hurt the US far far more than it will hurt the rest of the world, the US is actually far easier to replace than it realises, It's going to suck for Canadians (perhaps they could offset the tarrifs with import subsidies for other parts of the world?) a message that Threatening war, especially with your allies, if you don't get your way needs to be punished heavily.

Better a war fought with just money that soldiers dying on the battlefield. I don't like Trump's bullying tactics, it sometimes achieves results, but it also makes it difficult later. I would want to simply invite Canada to join the United States without the "or else!" The EU is taking in new members, I don't see why the United States couldn't also, Trumps bullying has just put Canada's back to the way, and if Canada joined now it would be giving into Trump's threats, My intent is not for Canada to be conquered by the US but for them to join of their own free will, not because the United States will tariff them if they don't! I also don't think we need Greenland so badly that we need to go to war with Denmark to acquire it! It would be nice if Greenland became the 51st state, but I wouldn't want to go to war over it! If Canada really wanted to stop Trump, it could join the United States and vote in the next presidential election.

I agree sort of. The underlining cause is back in 2018/19. Trudeau mocked tRump at a NATO conference. tRump had his feelings hurt and left early because other leaders laughed at him. The US President is mentally incapable of handling even the smallest of perceived slights. tRump has said this term is all about settling scores. So, he does this to all Canadians because Trudeau made fun of him. Congratulation to 50% of people from the States that elected a 78-year-old man baby with mental capacity of 9-year-old.

The tariffs are meant to mitigate the financial loss to the country from the tax cuts to the rich. Americans will pay so that the rich can get richer. It' actually very simple. Trump does not care about the population. Trump's number one motivation was to keep him out of jail and his minions, Musk, MIller, Bannon and the architects of the white supremacists' Project 2025, are the actual rulers. Do you Think Trump wrote, assisted in writing, read or understands the many executive orders that he is signing?

For example, potash mining/production from the province of Saskatchewan makes up 50% of the worlds exports. Give our mines are 1100 km or closer to the U.S. border an American farm isn't going to find cheaper transportation costs than they'll get buying Saskatchewan potash. And with President Trump increase to the cost of potash to the American farm did he just make Saskatchewan exports of cereals, pulses, and oil seed more competitive? How to piss off US farmer. I'm not close enough to the ag world to be able to say how much a 25% increase in the cost potash will increase the cost of a loaf bread but I can say with absolute certainty that it will be the the somebody buying the loaf of bread that pays.

Canadian here. The tariffs will hurt. And this may just be the beginning of a sprawling trade war, but make no mistake, Canada is not for sale, and Canada, despite its soft spoken nature, is determined to keep going on its own way. We have free trade with the EU and Pacific nations. For any US companies who find themselves caught up in tariffs for their export markets, consider setting up your export shop here, to keep your Canadian customers, and continue to have access to European and Asian markets under free trade agreements that are respected, and operate independently of any decision made by President Trump. Businesses need predictability and stability, and your neighbors to the north can provide that to all of your export markets.
