  • As Donald Trump returns to the White House, many are raising concerns about the possible decline of liberal democracy.
What then would a second Trump term mean for the next four years for the United States? And what impact will the president's foreign policy have on the Middle East?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill discusses these issues with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and former war correspondent Chris Hedges.

@@HernandogreensOrg I agree. It was an outstanding interview. Chris is passionate and articulate. Marc challenged him several times and Chris became even more articulate and incisive and persuasive. Chris Hedges is one of the most important advocates regarding social justice in the USA today. He educates my moral reasoning and his views guide my understanding of the actions that we need to take as a society. Thank you for this interview. "We need to save our soul." 🙏🏻😥

BOTH literally spoke to the truth of our perpetuated DETRIMENT under this, the literal bread and circus version of having been shocked by the revelation we are already in Rome-
As the Rubicon was crossed by the last generation's commitment to their own version of project 2025, the so called "project for a new American century ", SO imperative to their Cold War mindedness, the literal absence of Democratic function was ushered forth in the y2k election, actively stolen via their megaphone, Fox "news", having not yet become apparent for this antagonist mission of misinformation strategy, when they'd recognized Bush as the winner, ahead of time, while Florida's election workers were deciphering the result.
Then, our 2016 societal pariah, Roger Stone, engaged in the Brooks Brothers riots, astro turfing a faux outcry of Bush supporters that sped up the scotus getting involved, as Brett Kavanaugh and others, argued for Bush & co., therefore, writing what is now history..
Not quite as well k own, the fact that Gore won.
Also, Harris was found to have had over 4million ballots ILLEGALLY PURGED by the injection of wealthy conservative activist types, using the vigilante tactics afforded them by conservative lawmakers in swing states passing the framework to make it possible for them to affect our votes' validity..
      In swing states...
Remember how small the margins of fewer people gave Trump the win?
Greg Pallast (sp?) Is the reporter behind this review of course.
      Either way..
The dems of course, react belated to the pardoned 1500+ behind that actual attempted coup , on the day that every state's Medicaid portals were shut down...
As though forming a message to oppose last week's news, after what feels like last year, given the amount of money, energy, organization and more, just to cause the degree of chaos abounding..
News cycles can't keep up, by design, and Democrat "leadership" were opposed to even AOC being afforded the position to communicate a meaningful message to the greater amount of eyes, in exchange for preserving their generational representation?
As Republicans actually have the power, because their population of reps includes more younger people to be able to cover the media that's becoming more important than the cable industry and other older modes.
In this effort, we will lose even more bandwidth, FASTER.
As we see the CNN and others ALL preemptively surrender to allowing the most dysfunctional of lies and blatant liars,to join their reporting personnel.
Thereby having broadly NORMALIZED , and degraded our entire nation's ability to think in any way that's good for our mental, social or physical health ..

We don't have a "Democratic" party and a Republican party. We have two Republican parties. The corporate Republicans versus the crazy Christo fascist Republicans. One wants to preserve decorum and the Constitution, the other doesn't. Democracy is just a veneer. We've had Oligarchy this whole time. Thank you for opening my eyes to this reality.

  • @efortune357

    Quotes and Notes:
5:22 Chris: “Does democracy exist? I don’t think it exists. It’s a veneer. It’s the end of the Roman Empire. You have the symbols, the iconography, and the language of a democracy. But internally corporations and oligarchs have seized all the levers of power. I looked at this election as a battle corporatists and oligarchs.”
7:28 Chris: “As Aristotle wrote, once you create an oligarchic system with those kinds of inequities then your only two choices are tyranny or revolution.”
9:47 Chris: “All the writers of totalitarianism ground the rise of totalitarian movements: Hannah Arendt, Fritz, all of them, in despair, which is what’s happened to a significant part of the country, then you reach out for magical thinking. That’s what Trump offers.”
    11:59 Wokeness vs Class war
***13:15 March: Why has Liberalism failed?
Chris: “I would go back to the Cold War. So what you did is you created the Cold War Liberal. The Cold War Liberal was used to eviscerate the Left. And remember, with the breakdown of capitalism in the 1930s you had powerful, especially Union movements, the old CIO, the Wobblies, the Communist Party, which we’ve written out of our history.
We were just talking about the great W.E.B. Du Bois, and he was persecuted and stripped of his passport, and arguably America’s greatest intellectual, I would say. So the distortion of liberalism, and when Chomsky writes about Liberalism correctly, he says Liberalism is allowed to exist within a capitalist order because it’s a safety valve. It ameliorates the suffering enough to allow capitalism to go forward which is what FDR did. FDR was pressured into the New Deal reforms by the Left. And that’s not conjecture because I’ve read his private letters to his brother where he says, ‘If we don’t push through these kinds of reforms, including providing employment for 12 million Americans, public works, Social Security, 8 hour workday’, all of that was being pushed by sit-down strikes, radical unions. He said, ‘If we don’t carry out these reforms we will get Revolution.’ Those are his words. That was the fear, the spectre of the 1917 Revolution loomed large even in the 1930s over the Western World.”
14:55 creation of the faux Liberals, Clintons are classic example, political engine behind corporate oppression, while also using woke garbage
15:15 Woke Garbage? The corporations love it! Superficial. Identity politics furthering goals of the corporate State.
16:25 Chirs: “Wokeness in the hands of the ruling class has been used as a cudgel to punish and scold the working class.”
16:50 CIA ad, trans, binary can torture people too.
17:15 Identity politics does not deal with the mechanism of oppression which are primarily economic.
22:08 Mega churches bankrolled by the billionaire class. Because with Magic Jesus, you don’t need a labor union.
***33:19 Marc: Does it demand a more radical response than what we’ve traditionally done?
Chris: “Yeah. It demands a more radical response because we have to destroy the system. We have to destroy the ruling class. And the only mechanism we have to destroy the ruling class is by disrupting economic, social, and political life. That comes through mass mobilization, primarily through Labor and especially through the strike. We have to rebuild militant labor movements that shut the country down. That’s the only way out of this. And the oligarchs have understood this for a long time. It’s why they have made war against organized labor for a long time. Only 11% of the US workforce is unionized but we have to regain that militancy.
We have to understand who our enemy is and that if we don’t break the back of that enemy things are going to get worse, and worse, and worse. And we have to understand the only power we have is collective and it will require sacrifice. We had the bloodiest labor wars of any industrialized country. Hundreds of American workers were killed. Thousands, probably tens of thousands were blacklisted. We’ve got to look back. Because the capitalist class, they’re going to use every vicious mechanism they have.
You saw, without that corporate money Bernie Sanders would’ve run against Trump the first time around and I believe he would’ve won. But they destroyed it. They destroyed that possibility.
34:50 Marc: Are you hopeful? Are we on the precipice of a radical moment of resistance? Are we on the verge of toppling power?
Chris: “No. Because the Left has been so decimated. So we don’t have the Left we had in the 1930s.”

Wow I have to say: this my first introduction to Chris and I am completely impressed. As a black queer woman began organizing after the murder of Trayvon martin as a college kid, he spoke directly to me.
    1. Identity politics will not save us and actually it is a divisive strategy that is keeping us distracted.
    2. Radical revolution is needed and labor movements must happen. So when I witness Tabitha brown defend target or other liberal agendas, I am exhausted by our lack of discipline and commitment.
    3. As someone who is always optimistic, I fear, as Chris mention, we are headed through dark times bc of our unwillingly to organize and break the back of the oligarchs.
Lastly, the soul is real. I believe in our goodness and divine power. Dr MLK said “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
And I believe in my heart of hearts even though these days will be dark, the good will win again even if it is not in my lifetime.

"The rise of oligarchy has left society with two choices: tyranny or revolution, as Aristotle warned. History shows that democracies often drift into oligarchy through wealth concentration and corporate influence.
