Tribute to beauty of Gothic Architecture

- Notre Dame in memoriam ~ Even though I am a pagan I believe Gothic cathedrals are the best buildings in the world. The term Gothic was applied as a pejorative in Italy because the work was associated with the "Germanic barbarians" (actually French) who invented it - comparing them to Goths was to imply they were part of the Germanic cultural sphere and not the Roman. Giorgio Vasari used the term "barbarous German style" in his 1550 Lives of the Artists to describe it. Gothic varied regionally such that English, German and French Gothic are distinct styles.
To me, English Gothic cathedrals are the perfect architectural expression of the Northern soul. They remind me of forests and trees. In this video tribute to the burned Notre Dame cathedral, I show the beauty of four English cathedrals; York Minster, Wells cathedral, Exeter cathedral, and Winchester cathedral. All of them are medieval structures which took centuries to build. All of the quotes in the video come from the famous art critic, John Ruskin, who loved Gothic architecture and promoted its revival in the 19th century. Most of the video is just me reading quotes from Ruskin!

I wish we still build stuff around aesthetics and not grey and functional.
There's some new stuff that I don't mind especially some of it out of Sweden
You can, but on a smaller scale. Make a workshop, get a few old tools, and begin.
The focus of Gothic architecture is both form and function. Notre Dame is easily 10 times more function than any modern church. Do you think that those awful ugly modern churches made of glass steel and drywall will be standing 800 years from now?
@@Mephilis78 Yes I meant only functional like grey apartment blocks. function and aesthetics can work hand in hand . Lived in China for two years and it was so awesome going to small towns and seeing their traditional buildings and temple but when i'd head to ;larger town or cities it wold be grey and industrial.
@@nicholaswebber6694 Yeah. Did you ever see PJW's video about the UK demolishing centuries old buildings to put up more crap apartment buildings? Nothing pisses me off more than needlessly destroying and replacing our heritage.
In the US our historical society actually has enough pull to keep that kind of thing from happening.
"a Symphony in stone..."
~ Victor Hugo on Notre-Dame
And when the palace of juctice burns, what a fire it makes. Do you think the symphony changed with its physical renovation? A screaming symphony perhaps?
That...is a very beautiful quote....it humbles me , knowing the time and faith to build such an incredible piece of masonry and a repository of the western way......
Gothic architecture is poetry in stone.
Those are the best words I’ve seen in a sentence, such a good quote
Beautifully said
I don't love Gothic just because it is Christian. I love the Natural History Museum for the same reason I love Westminster abbey - because Gothic is beautiful. Losing a beautiful European historic building is a terrible thing. You must exist in a cultural void if you don't see this, in which case I pity you.
Did you hear Islam's third holiest mosque burned on the same day?
Mark Baldwin you strike me as an urbanite because you think a building and a forest are equivalent. I was born and raised in the country and still live in a very rural secluded place
@@zrgbrg I had the same thoughts. I'm not happy that it burned, but there are more important things to do and care about. And the fact remains that many churches were built on Pagan sites and that the Christians destroyed many forests to make these buildings possible.
@@zrgbrg human without culture is merely animal that can dwell in forest sleep in cave and fish with hands like gollum. "What is more important, is to perpetuate those things of beauty which are of real value because involving actual sense-impressions rather than vapid theories. "Equality" is a joke - but a great abbey or cathedral, covered with moss, is a poignant reality. If it is for us to safeguard and preserve the conditions which produce great abbeys, and palaces, and picturesque walled town, and vivid sky-lines of steeples and domes, and luxurious tapestries, and fascinating books, paintings and statuary, and colossal organs and noble music, and dramatic deeds on embattled fields - these are all there is of life: take them away and we have nothing which a man of taste or spirit would care to live for. Take them away and our poets have nothing to sing - our dreamers have nothing to dream about. The blood of a million men is well shed in producing one glorious legend which thrills posterity and it is not at all important why it was shed." - h.p lovecraft
@@zrgbrg glad to see another cowardly varg stock account, master h.p lovecraft was cosmicist - cosmic pessimist, atheist would never use witchcraft and spiritualism in his stories, he was more of gnostic who viewed god as demiurge than atheist! you know nothing! i didnt said they brought us culture, i said IT IS OUR CULUTRE THAT WE HAVE TO PRESERVE AND CULTIVATE, watch varg video christianity is 80% pagan and think again, he can think too sometimes but only for manipulative purposes.
When I saw Notre Dame burning I didn't think it would be something people could argue over. But it seems like the only thing people saw in that fire was their own, selfish need to yell at anyone who had an ounce of respect for that masterpeice
Oh, what's been happening?
@@monroecorp9680 Lots of people, at least here where I live have been using the event to promote bad thinking in the form of blatant false dichotomies. The main one that comes to mind that I've seen was "People crying about a burnt building but not about the thousands of kids going hungry here in the U.S.". Or, saying "I hate the catholic church so I'm glad its burnt".
@@markgarrett7428 Fucking Hell, I haven't actually seen any of that kind of thing - I saw the video that documented folks who were clicking happy response options on FB, but they seemed disproportionately muslim.
It's saddening to hear these reactions. These creatures are entirely unbecoming of civilization.
@Mark Garrett I was watching the news before and the usual professionally trained instigative trolls were implying that rebuilding an 850+ year old cathedral is money wasted . The money would be better spend on donating it to poor people in Africa. I shook my head. Why? Last time I checked many people and organisations have donated money to Africa for at least half a century. Particularly sub Saharan Africa. I haven't seen much being built there in all of that time. And that is just in the space of 50 years. The money is more wisely invested in something such as a beautiful cathedral than perpetual donations to people who never seem to improve their situation.
@@crypticclue860 Yeah, that's a lot of the same stuff I heard as well. People in this day and age don't seem to see value in taking care of their own country and culture. And the value of history has gone down dramatically. It's an absolute shame.
Your words echo those of Robert Louis Stevenson;
“Mankind was never so happily inspired as when it made a cathedral: a thing as simple and specious as a statue to the first glance, and yet on examination, as lively and interesting as a forest in detail.”
Mark Baldwin Both are a key part of what makes us European.
Mark Baldwin This building happens to be an incredibly important artefact of European history - why shouldn’t we value it simply due to the fact that nature is being desecrated in favour of profit and third-world industrialisation?
Besides, we whites are pretty much the *only* people that seem to give a shit about environmentalism in the first place, so you’re preaching to the choir.
@@Floral_Green lol wut. ‘We-whites’ began the modern desecration of the natural world.
I almost converted, seeing how pagans treated this beautiful site burning, but seeing this video really helped me remember that if people like you can help us find harmony with christians, and keep respect for all of our history then it is worth it to try to help
paganism is about the gods not the conduct of people who call themselves pagan
@@Survivethejive Can be said of almost all religions and their followers
This moved me greatly, seeing all the beautiful architecture and reflecting upon it. Thank you
Modern architects could never achieve the beauty of any classical architecture, they have been brainwashed with the false idea that anything can be beautiful regardless of the talent or effort applied.
Gothic architecture honours both the innate beauty of nature and the creative ability of man; The ability of both Gods and Men, simultaneously.
It'll survive and so will we.
The White man , when under sufficient pressure, has always pulled through eventually

God shines in his creation, and the beauty of their works. Whatever the faith of the makers, a cathedral or temple is a thing of beauty, and it should be treasured by all. The "pagans" who celebrate its destruction are not believers -- they are empty vessels lost in a void.
No truly spiritual person rejoices in the destruction of art born of faith
That or making a really sad attempt to show how edgy they are- I've known some people like this, Pagans and otherwise, who seem to delight in "rebelling" by going out of their way to mock, insult, or offend Christianity or Christians.
I'm a Pagan myself and it physically hurt to see Notre Dame on fire.
So many wonderful memories by Our Lady, I am glad there is so much that survived. It was like something was being torn out of me, I could not watch the images while she was on fire. Heartbreaking. I look forward to someday returning to a restored center of France.
Same :'( and I'm an orthodox christian, also never been to France. But I'm also studing at an arts high school...
as an Indian Hindu I was unfamiliar , with European architecture, I simply salute to the constructor's of those magnificent churches they are a testament to the human ability and a powerful symbol of culture.
I'm impressed. This is a whole declaration of love to what I'd call the visible soul of a nation: the architecture.
Thank you.
Never forget the need for beauty to inspire us. And, never forget Notre Dame.
Stent a chill down my spine. Thank you for honoring our magnificent heritage!
I love Gothic architecture. I'm fortunate to live near Exeter Cathedral. I find them far from grotesque but totally beautiful and very humbling to behold.
gargoyles and grotesques were intended to be grotesque, hence the name! Seems they failed on you though
@@Survivethejive Yes indeed the gargoyles had slipped my mind.
Thank you for showing how Gothic architecture is inspired by the forest. Truly it represents the soul of Northern Europe. I hope to one day build my home inspired by it too
It was a majestic building. A pinnacle of my first visit to Paris. In my top 5 must-see in this lifetime list. Later, hearing a Mozart concert performed in a Medieval Cathedral in Vienna was sublime.
What a lovely voice. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I am so sorry for the loss that we all have experienced, the only solace I find in such a loss is that we bond and come together to take back what is ours and never forget what has been taken from us. 💜
As a non-Christian, I find this video quite refreshing, especially after the destructive idiocy put out by that Varg character.
I’m also a non-Christian (an atheist) and I respect these beautiful masterpieces of European architecture, made to show respect to something higher than oneself.
Varg is... Varg. He has his own mind. It doesn't make sense to complain about him. Pick out the good stuff he says and ignore the bullshit.
Varg's paganism is actually barbarism
You all blindly weep for the destruction of our ancestors spiritual cage, this is not destruction, it's freedom
@@cothromgrimr161 You are aware how toxic you are, don’t you? How about we destroy all the other ‘trappings’ of civilisation, too? Let’s burn down the town halls. Let’s destroy the railways. Destroy the water works! Then call it ‘freedom’. :-/
Transcendent and spiritual beauty is always something that should be protected, and universally mourned when lost.
beautiful, people who don't mourn notre dame don't possess human soul.
As I said in Varg's slander video about this, I can trace my family lineage back to Roderic, King of the Visigoths and I have the documents to prove it. And since that time my family has been catholic, so to me and my ancestors it is NOTRE Dame.
Btw Tom, have you seen the video of what it looks like a Muslim walking around the cathedral when it should've been closed?
Allahisgay Mohammedthefalseprophet It was posted on twitter by several people.
It shouldn’t be hard to find.
Allahisgay Mohammedthefalseprophet Yes! I did not reply with the link because I’m working but yes that’s the video
Allahisgay Mohammedthefalseprophet just wait for the amout of muslims who will donate money to the rebuild.
I’ll never forgive them actually cheering on the live feed and the jews right after saying that there were anti semitic statues so it was good riddance
@@honourandtradition8078 really Laughing? Fu*king dirt bags! Take care at work. Greetings from Uppsala, Blood and soil 14
Allahisgay Mohammedthefalseprophet Look up Paul Joseph Watson he did a video on it.
Several of them making fun of the fire (possible arson). The slamic state even put out a note saying that the fire was a blow at the heart of the crusaders.
Thx my brother, blood and soil!
Beauty to the senses helps one's mind to transcend towards the divine.
Beautiful Tribute. Beautiful thoughts and explanations. You made a statement, that Paganism and Christianity can and did combine their souls in this magnificent Architecture.
We never should be enemies. Christianity vs Pagansim was just a war in our souls, because we want to understand the world better. We strive upwards and always questioning ourself, to become better. No more brother wars. No more wars over faith. Let us explore Logos together, my Christian Brothers!
That's pretty much Roman Catholicism for you
I often say that the Protestant Reformation was the true ending of most of Europe's pagan past, as the reformers systematically wiped out the pagan elements that Roman Catholicism preserved by "Christianising" pagan beliefs and structures
I love Gothic architecture and I love Notre Dame. Such a pity.
I actually felt true sorrow when Notre Dame burned in April of last year. Coming from an American who was an atheist when it burned
I love this video. Replayed it, I don't know how many times. What an education. I'm Catholic, and should have already known all of this, but I didn't. Thank you! Oh to go back in time to watch the builders in action, what a sight that would be! Yep, no pagan here, but I find your channel very informative. Glad I subscribed.
Such a beautiful look into Gothic architecture, thank you. All of us know in our hearts that Nature is Beauty. A sacred grove of trees burning down calls for mourning, but does not mean the spirit of forests will not continue to bless us forever. Let us hope the spirit of great Western architecture perseveres in the same way.
Used to visit Paris routinely as our family holiday in the early nineties when I was a boy, before the real lass immigration, when you could still get an appreciation of French culture...not that they were welcoming 😂 but Notre dam was always a big visit we’d always go there and spend a while looking around...seeing it in flames felt like a loss of an old friend or family member, like my childhood memories had just been ripped away...weird emotional feeling
Thank You for such a beautifully creative heartfelt commentary video. I loved it.
Reactionary Pagans who applaud the destruction of these grand monuments would do well to read von List and study the secret ways in which our Pagan symbols were preserved for the initiate and rendered invisible to the layman. These stones were not raised by Semitic craftsmen, and there is nothing in the architecture or aesthetic details which could be described as holy from a Semitic perspective. Gothic architecture is among the highest artistic expressions of the divine longing of our people. They are a salute from the Earth to the cosmos - symbolic antennae to the galactic expanse and eternity, itself.
They weren't secret
The pagan elements within various Gothic churches weren't hidden from the churchmen or the bishops
These pagan elements had the Church's blessings because they were essentially "christianised"
This wasn't a problem until the Protestant Reformation put an end to this idea and the Catholic Church, in trying to fight back on the inroads made by the Protestants, went on it's own clean up, which meant a lot of these pagan elements were systematically downplayed, destroyed or forgotten amongst the populace, so as to ensure they wouldn't leave for the "purity" of the Protestant faith
The men who envisioned and laid the foundations for these structures did so knowing they wouldn’t live long enough to relish the fruits of their labor. I’m not sure men like that even exist anymore.
A REPRESENTATION OF THE UNIQUENESS OF THE PEOPLE THAT BUILT EACH BUILDING...
Another superb video. Truly glad to have kindred spirits in this disconnected world.
Notre Dame should be restored as faithfully as possible.
Gothic looks otherworldly. Amazing.
Fantastic. Europe is the most beautiful thing in the world.
In any case, may the flames of Notre Dame light the way to a renewed sense of awareness in who we are, and where we can find it.
A recent article about Notre Dame said "a new spire, adapted to the techniques and challenges of our time," will be added to the building after the roof is complete. I hope to god that they don't ruin another great piece of architecture with their warped and selfish perceptions of beauty. Modern architects are some of the least creative since the stone ages despite their technological innovations. They are completely out of touch with classical architecture and therefore have no right to modify it in any way!
Well done, thank you. You are going a great work for our people.
You’ve given me a new perspective of this amazing form of architecture
Touching and beautiful. Continue the great work my brother.
I just discovered your channel. ❤️
Notre Dame fires were not an accident.
I'm Brazilian and lived in Paris for one year back in the 80ies.
It was close to the cathedral and I looked her every day.
Many churches were burned.
No, not Islamic people's work but it was planned.
In my opinion that's you're best video to date, and stands out in dazzling contrast to the absolute bilge spewed out by Varg on this subject.
THANK YOU so much for this video. These are exactly my thoughts. I was growing sick and tired of all the people saying that they don't care about this stunning example of gothic architecture burning down because is "christian". Even getting happy. It took me on my nerves seeing all that people not thinking about how many years of art history, human history and culture had been destroyed in just minutes.
They're so blinded by their "christian hatred" that they can't see the big picture. They aren't capable of thinking above all of that, and that's very sad, because one more time, that's another example of mankind destroying itself based on a radical mindset.
Thank you again for this video, it made my day and I truly and wholeheartedly -as an artist and art lover to the core- support your opinion.
Well done brother. I now regret not waiting the obscene amount of time to go inside the cathedral when in Paris two years back.
Wow, didn't know hardly any of this, thanks!
Beautifully narrated. Thank you.
Thank you! This exactly how I feel about this architecture! Sacred geometry, nature, and the human connection to the Divine created in stone and wood. My passion is medieval history and architecture and watching this fire hurt my heart. I don’t know how people can politicize this, but somehow they do, which makes my heart break even more. They can’t see the beauty and the history, they only see their own petty problems.
Gothic Architecture has clear germanic pagan influences. the sacred germanic forest in stone
Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for this.
hello Sir!
A. L. Hello brother, I hope you are in good health.
Gothic architecture epitomises the Burkean conception of society as a partnership between the living, the dead, and those yet to be born.
Ive stood in awe at these buildings all my life when I walked in york minster it took my breath away lets keep our past dont allow the flag of the cresent moon to wave above our proud history we need walls built around them in light of paris do you not think
Missed this when it came out. Thanks.
I think you have shown me how to appreciate gothic architecture and a reason to mourn the Notre Dame’s burning, besides the simple fact that it is history damaged (something I always mourn for)
I also would like to formally apologize for claiming that the bell beaker were celts as I did before, but I do believe that they were some closely related people, that likely spoke a language close to the Italo-celtic branch.
I would like you to go into the celts from the west theory a bit more, as not only does it appear to be a more valid theory than the Hallstatt/La Tene theory (which doesn’t explain how the language and culture could’ve so quickly and so permanently become a integral part of the isles’ culture) and I feel that you don’t shed enough light on the celts of old on this channel, as they were the indo-european masters of western & Central Europe for nearly a thousand years
(if you subscribe to the celts from the west theory that is).
Yes the English are Germanic, but they are also Celtic, and they are just as integral if not more so to Europe’s history as the Germanic peoples...
No offense to you of course, I love this channel, I simply feel you’ve near completely overlooked a very important part of the story you try to tell here
In 0:33 it's 21st century my dear friend. Your videos are well informative and I admire them!
Love from Iraq 🇮🇶
My dad's first reaction was that place might have been full of too much sin. He went on to say this is a sign of bad and dark times. True that sad day indeed.
Would find a video about the work of Ruskin, Morris and Steiner very interesting. Straddles the intersections of this video and think it would pay homage to some common strains in their thought.
Excellent video once again
Love your work man
GOOD ONE Survive the Jive. GOOD ON YOU.
Good points. This architecture though it can be fascinating does also strike me as dark, foreboding and at times menacing.
You're the best Tom, you and I are kindred souls. If I ever had the chance I'd love to buy you a few beers and spend a few hours talking about the proto-Indo European language and our ancestral history
Divine architecture nourishes the mind, body and spirit.
Garish slabs of concrete embolden humanities flaws. It helps manifest the kind of chaos both the Bible and Poetic Edda warned us about via its sensory deprivation and a general feeling of unease.
Prisons look the way they do for a very good reason.
I hope to see the day when modern architecture and all it's soulless ugliness is replaced with a revival of our beautiful traditional architecture

Thank you for this video. I've visited there and it was a very spiritual experience. If I am not mistaken, people gathered and worshiped there before Christianity.
I'm pretty sure Ctesiphon would have been a good example of Aryan architecture, had it not been erased by Moslems. All of the post-Islamic mosques (and churches) in the former realms of Persian speaking world were based on Zoroastrian architecture.
Now that's why I follow pagans, to get montages of beautiful christian cathedrals...
Thank you so much for this.
I love the Cathedrals in Europe. I have seen the two German cathedrals and Portugal.
Wonderful!
thank you.
Oft I go to Lichfield cathedral to stand below her glorious westwerk or to Letocetum and walk midst roman ruins, now shadowed beneath St Johns', where once sat a temple to Minerva. In such places gaze I an hour or two so then for a while modernity's burden dissipates and my senses tune to that which was before these bastard and sterile times.
The whole continent of Europe is one great big giant museum
The Gothic style has strong elements of Mudejar architecture from Spain
I believe these are not churches or cathedrals, but energy centers with cymatics for the harmonising of energies from the great Tartaria empire and they are worldwide?
Gothic architecture might be really rooted in pre-christian wooden architecture of the actual Goths.
@Asier Linazasoro Not so sure, you are only talking about the Visigoths there were also Goths in France. Also "medieval french catholic" is only a culture but not a people they have to get it from somewhere. Maybe Vasari wasn't so wrong after all.
Sorry this is off the topic Tom but can you make a video which discusses Tyr/Tiwaz?
What the hell happened to the fragments of the stained glass windows. Did they collect and save them, or did they label them as racist garbage and throw them away

I was crying all throughout this video.
Great video!
It’s amazing seeing fundapagans sperging our on how this is a good thing etc
It shows a stunning ignorance of the influences and reality of gothic architecture. The influence of ancient European history on the various facades, ancient symbolism in the fundamental designs of the churches. It is beyond Christian in my view. Much of this naughty, often pagan or alchemical symbolic material was hidden right under then churches nose and was documented to be in a way a place where he peoples of Europe would often stick it to the clergy. Since in Europe they still practiced pagan rights at these times and these are shown clearly in the statue scenes or the bas-reliefs that are replete with pagan and alchemical symbology. These structures represent the truly ancient in the European mind and thus the culmination of this rich tradition. They are in my view the high point of our crumbling civilisation.
The left I can understand in their celebrations. Since they are spiteful mutants and hate the beautiful. European pagans and nationalists should educate themselves before they sperg out in such a cretinous way.
Lol... they weren't sticking it to the clergy
The Church and the clergy was fully aware and fully participating in this act
In the period when these Gothic churches were erected, the pagan elements had merely been "christianised" as was the tradition in the West for centuries by the Catholic church
After the Protestant Reformation though, the Catholic Church got a lot more stricter, enforcing a more "purified" and "orthodox" belief structure
They still got mocked by the Protestants for being too pagan though (and still do)
In a near future we shall build pagan gothic sites with the forest as motive that will be admired world wide.
Greetings from the north.
Did the gothic tribes really invent it? Can’t seem to find information that confirms this. Would make me appreciate it even more in that case as a swede.
No
Almost shed a tear.. thank you for this, StJ.
