Going Off Grid Ep11 - Shed Cabin Build Pt2

  • In the first video Judy and I built the steel Portal frame. In this video we finish the structure to Lock Up stage. Fit out is next. This is will be our tiny house/ cabin for at least the time it takes us to build an actual house. We have all our Owner Builder approvals in place. As far as shed kits go, I am very happy with the everything despite having minor issues. The supplier was great. Total build time was around 18 solid days. Elapsed time was longer due to weather and life.
    Shed colour Monument.
    Size 8m x 6m with a 3m verandah.
    Height 3.9m
    Thanks for watching!
    Regards Scott

  • @TheCaptainbeefylog
    @TheCaptainbeefylog Год назад +2

    I'm really looking forward to and ultimately dreading building something like this. The hardest part for me was getting together enough stand-alone power to live off-grid. Unless you have a spare $20k handy, nobody wants to talk to you about rural off-grid. If I lived in a metro area and wanted to do a feed-back-to-grid system then it'd be almost free, by comparison lol.
    I wish I had your rainfall lol. I run to town about every fortnight to haul water from the public bore, but you get used to it. Slowly getting enough roof-space for usefull run-off. Living in a tent teaches you a lot about tarps. Soon I'll have saved enough for a caravan and then I can get started on a pad and some hard panel annex for more roof and living space. The insulation will be welcome for winter too.
    My main issue (I think) for putting up a structure like this will be getting the main frames in place on my own. Lots of ropes and pulleys by the look of things. Might all get a bit ancient Egypt here for a bit.
    I'm loving the look of the place already and you haven't even begun the interior!

    • @ScottTurnerformeindustrious
      @ScottTurnerformeindustrious  Год назад +1

      Thanks for your comment CB! Building by your self would be tough. Yes lots of cunning plans you must hatch. A caravan would be a good base. Off the ground and built in storage etc. We were really glad when we set up the water tanks. Before that we hauled the water in 20 l jerry cans. Getting your power is easier nowadays with DIY but still is an investment, particularly if you need high wattage for cooking etc. If you don't need high wattage you can build a much smaller, cheaper system I guess. Thanks again and all the best!

    • @TheCaptainbeefylog
      @TheCaptainbeefylog Год назад

      @@ScottTurnerformeindustrious power was a real worry until I figured out that I could start with a cheap generator and some small stand-alone panel/battery sets. I then slowly expanded them until I had enough power for my 24/7 needs then a little extra. Rarely need the gennie now.

    Scott, I love the way you go through each stage of the build and how you discuss how and why you are doing certain things. Even the attention to detail of protecting the fascia as not to scratch it at your awning. Any other tradie would have just forced it in and left it. I envy the peacefulness and the surroundings of nature you will enjoy, I love the water tanks and the other bits and pieces that we take for granted living in our concrete suburbia.
    I’m looking forward to your heating set up and power set up for the new build, you gotta build a nice big wood stove in there Scott! One that you cook on and heat the home. Just some advice.
    The ends of the roof sheets should have the valleys folded up and the ridge cap should be flat on the peaks with the lower lip cut to the contour of the roof to prevent strong winds pushing rain underneath it.
    Same for awning. Folded valleys and then shed roof over top. :)
    PS : love your videos.
    You build some cool stuff.

    • @ScottTurnerformeindustrious
      @ScottTurnerformeindustrious  Год назад +3
