A personal sore spot is the construction workers:
My dad has worked many jobs of a similar nature, toiling for endless hours to provide enough for my mom, siblings, and I.
My dad has been a hard laborer his entire life, and I've always held immense respect and love for him as his daughter for that.
The arrogance of Hollywood is pitiful.

I'm so sorry. For me, the sore spot was them complaining about being “thin but not too thin”. I live in the South and have seen what the obesity epidemic does to people. So watching the movie disregard society promoting being a healthier size upset me, especially when the USA is the fattest nation.

I very much agree I work similar thankless hard jobs to pay my way through college and to know the contempt and lack of understanding they have in Hollywood for the average working man makes me irate. We work very long hours doing backbreaking labor for not nearly enough pay most of the guys I work with will be stuck there or jobs like it for the rest of their lives because in our society that’s their “place”. It’s no small wonder the male suicide rate is so high. People wonder why men feel isolated and hopeless it’s because for many of us we are. The types of people who make these productions will not understand until the infrastructure they depend upon starts collapsing when enough men take the comfort of a grave over the pain of life.

Im sure your dad was a fine man. The trope of a construction worker shouting sexist comments to women is nothing more than an old comedy stereotype. Although it's long established and shorthand for a certain type of bad behavior I don't think anyone really believes all construction workers behave like this. It's a cartoon style joke that belongs in this movie because it ia also a ridiculous cartoon like parody. Lighten up. You are the only person offended by this. The movie was not a personal attack on your father. It's an old trope that helps writers set up punchlines and nothing more. Hollywood is pitiful? wow.

As an anecdote from an all-female workplace, I used to work part time at a research lab where all of the staff except me were women. Everyone of them talked shit about each other behind their backs, and especially of the research head who in turn treated her underlings like an absolute tyrant. I was present in one occasion where she ran into the darkroom where a girl had been measuring the breathing of bean weevils for the last 18 hours without sleep. She didn't notice me because we had partitioned the room and I was on the other side hidden from the door. She started screeching how the measuring results were garbage, how the girl is a worthless piece of shit and is actively trying to ruin her project. It went way beyond just reprimanding an employee. Also slammed the door as hard as she could for a finish. As soon as she was gone the girl cried for like 15 minutes straight and said this happened all the time. I told her maybe she should look for a project from another department, and lo and behold the next day she'd quit and the research head was crawling all over the walls panicking because now she had nobody to take the measurements 18 hours straight in a darkroom. Local man ruins everything, and I don't regret it. By the way everybody treated me like a king and I got a big box of chocolates from the research head at the end of my stint.
Later in life I've ran into a lot of women who have worked in women-only environments and all of them have said those places desperately need men around in the mix to prevent the infighting and tyranny.

that's sad. the only place with all women I worked at which was conflict free, was a research lab. it was nice and calm, the head researcher was very thoughtful and considerate. There was this problematic girl but even that wasn't an issue since the other ladies didn't play into her toxicity. But I do agree, most women at workplaces can become like this, they (or, we) are conflicting and backstabbers. They'll be the ones who judge you, envy you, betray you, be hypocrites to... I much rather be around men,,they're more straightforward and relaxed.

I never worked in a women olny place, so I can't exactly say anything about that kind of situation. Altough so far in all of my jobs majority of workers are women. While it's true that some of them afe rather ficle with who is their bestie of the month, I consider most of them rather good co-workers. With the exception of two of the laziest people I've met so far - one of them was a woman, the other a man. I must admit though that my previous boss was the most viscious woman I've ever met. The kind that kindly smiles at you while stabbing you in the back multiple times. She was tormenting her employees and after a few months almost ten people resigned because of a break down or simply because they couldn't stand her. She was the single worst boss I had so far and I had a few. Most of them were men and they were descent or good people and easy to work with. The lady I mentioned before was the opposite. While I do belive there are a lot of competent women easy to work with I also admit that most of them are not in the highest position. From my experience women who want power are often willing to sacrifice others to achive their goal. That's why with my current work experience I prefer if my boss is a man. Not to mention that women sometimes take forever to make a decision. A worst type of boss is one who can't make his or her mind. And I am a woman myself, so I know what I'm taking about - at least where indecision is a factor 🙂

So a thought has occurred to me. If the positions of the Ken dolls is supposed to be a comparison to what real world women go through, doesn't that mean the message of the movie is that we should remove women's rights?
According to the plot's own logic the Kens rising up against the barbies is a bad thing. But the Kens are supposed to be a representation of the oppression women face. More over its considered a happy ending when the kens are repressed. So following the internal logic of the movie leads to the idea that oppressed groups should continue to be suppressed and leave the group majority in complete control.

I keep hearing over and over that it’s a parody, that it’s my fault that I just don’t understand that it’s parody. Why can’t all these people who agree with you and I not see that it’s parody? The issue with that statement (besides how ridiculously condescending it is) is that if a parody cannot make its jokes clear, then it has failed to be a parody. It has failed to deliver any kind of biting or even minorly impactful commentary on the subject it parodies. So either this movie is the product of a comedically inept director not understanding how to execute a parody, or it is the result of a director not knowing how to form proper propaganda because of how contradictory her ideology is. Barbie is seen both as a feminist icon for her numerous careers, or a misogynistic icon because she’s a literal female object. Greta doesn’t seem to know whether to go the “women being objectified is sexually empowering” route or the “her sexual objectification belittles her achievements” route. Either way, her movie is not a parody of either one, or anything at all. It’s just a mess.

Also, the whole power=happiness thing completely cuts out the fact that some people, men and women both, can find happiness in many ways, including by being mothers and/or fathers while their partners are the ones who go out and work a day job. Some even split the responsibilities half-and-half, working part-time jobs and taking care of their children when not at work. Some people are perfectly happy to take up these roles and no one should be judged or shamed for that.

On a related note, the russian book “envy” was a really good read. It’s from soviet times and it’s a dark comedy about a sausage factory entrepeneur who takes in a drifter/layabout to inspire him to become a model soviet citizen. The layabout ends up ruining the benefactor’s career. Why? Envy. It’s a tale about what happens when you don’t understand the driving force of Lumpenproletarian politics- it’s the politics of envy, and the riot/theft/graffiti/robbery is not a byproduct of being Wokeist, it is the goal, which they hide under a veneer of wanting Justice.

It would go to show that despite how she feels about Barbie, Raquelle does, deep down, care about her to know the one thing that means a lot.
Giving Raquelle a bit of growth and showing how her antagonism of Barbie is what will lead to her downfall. Have the two have a heart-to-heart in the conclusion of one of the seasons finally making peace with each other, Raquelle putting their differences aside, seeing that fighting Barbie is pointless. But it was the episode where I realized how hilarious Raquelle is (shoutout to the line right after Barbie spells out the moral), so I have a soft spot for it. That, and it ends with a (comedic) win for Ken, as he's the one who answers the question no one can answer.

What is truly disturbing and disgusting is to see real woman in the real-world act like Barbie in the Barbie movie and then find a guy, after rejecting many men, or a guy like Ken who is perfect for her, and to see the guy she chooses, who if we go in depth, we'll see how horrible of a choice that guy really is. She wants a Minion, not a Man, not a 'real man', as she says, 'I want a real man'. She is not saying what she actually wants, and what she wants is conditioned by her PERCEPTION. These movies, like Barbie are designed to CONDITION the PERCEPTION of the perspective of the audience members, woman, but also males who view it. This movie is purely a Propaganda Film.

Also, from what I've read, Greta Gerwig depicts a caricature of the world as it was thought of 70 to a 100 years ago. Greta Gerwig is 40. She never even knew the world she depicts in her film. Even if we're generous in saying that her film tries to create empathy for women in men by reversing the roles... Things haven't been close to being like this in 100 years. If her social commentary is "look at how women have it hard", she's 100 years too late. Not only has this message been regurgitated over and over again in all media possible over the last 80 years, but it fails to account for today's challenges. She completely lacks understanding of the male psyche and modern men's issues. In targeting an adult audience (more precisely, people her age and older), she also selects the wrong audience for a political commentary. People her age and older already have ossified beliefs that are REALLY hard to change and adapt. As far as women are concerned, she fails to address what really eats away at modern women: being asked to perform like men, at the risk of denying their own femininity both in biology and in mindset, the slow realization that career is a useless rat race, defining a new paradigm for dating with the age of digitalization and its consequences,.. It would resonate with women in oppressive patriarchal structures... That is if the men allow their women to go to the movies in the first place.
Also to my point about her message being vastly outdated: we're talking about a movie primarily made, planned and conceived by strong, independent, successful women, for women. Then you'll have women point out that there hasn't been a female president yet, and the answer is obvious: culturally, we're there already. Clinton almost made it (she wouldn't have been allowed to even compete in a "man's world", see how many prominent female politicians exist in Egypt...), and even some of the most patriarchal societies in Western Europe have elected female leaders, especially (interestingly) from conservative or far-right movements.
And so rather than regurgitate that tired old tripe, she could go on about how, despite obvious progress in that department, the legal system still doesn't do justice to our collective lofty ideals. Or how the workplace is still plagued by a small, but extremely toxic minority. But they said "Nah, it'll be fine".

    • @vde1846
      @vde1846 Год назад

Worth noting further is that even the patriarchal world of yesteryear and far yonder that she imagines is modern America, is not anything like what she excoriates. This is one of the fundamental problems with all forms of feminism: their frankly insane conspiracy theory conception of patriarchy and "female subjugation." They'd have you believe that past societies where ruled by naked and brute male force and that women where seen as subhuman and basically enslaved. This description fits literally 0 societies and civilizations; *all* human societies are ruled by customs and and taboos that are primarily enforced by women, *all* human societies value the safety and sanctity of women highly and patriarchal structures exist precisely in order to ensure that. Depending on how much women can safely contribute they may have more or less overt influence; so arctic whale hunters or nomadic herders, where women simply cannot help with food gathering without risking death and kidnaping, have narrower roles for women and tropical hunter-gatherers or temperate semi-agriculturalists, where food gathering is basically 50-50, have much broader ones; but they all value and seek to protect women. In primitive and harsh societies, constantly facing famine and war, this protection may often *look* like subjugation from the outside, but only when one ignores the extreme danger and toil that the vast majority of men in such societies face.

I've seen a lot of animated Barbie movies and shows with my girls. Barbie is pretty, smart, kind, resourceful, and will rise to the challenge under difficult circumstances. Usually the adversary is a power hungry evil woman, often with some magical powers. None of them have a "oh it's so hard to be a woman" rant that went on and on and sucked all the energy out of the film. Otherwise I thought the movie was colorful, creative, and funny. The exploration of how the Ken's feel at being so peripheral in Barbie world was fun. They are peripheral, it's Barbie world after all.

Despot is again spot on. However we must admit the movie has been wildly popular with good word of mouth. I believe there are several reasons why. 1. The initial marketing, as Despot explained, downplayed the radical political views, and played on legitimate nostalgia among women for the toy Barbie. 2. Women are hungry for a movie that isn't a rom-com aimed squarely at them - that they can make "theirs". Thus, Barbie has become an event that you dress up for and go to see with your buds. 3. The film is actually well made, with beautiful colors and sets, elaborate wardrobe and practical effects. 4. The main characters are good looking and not androgynous ciphers - people like to see good looking feminine and masculine actors on the big screen. 5. The political messaging is so on the nose, so ludicrously exaggerated, and the Ken's so obviously oppressed, that, perhaps, it comes off as farce.

One thing I have to say about this movie and its future though... This was lightning in a bottle. It came out at the right time, where everything else is so incredibly boring. People are just desperate to have some fun, and the marketing made this look legit just fun and a relaxed time.
Now WB is busy greenlighting a ton of stuff to recapture this, including a Polly Pocket movie directed by Lena Dunham, and a Barney movie as an adult comedy.... None of these movies are going to earn money. This is not going to happen again.
They will chase the buzz of Barbie endlessly and loose an incredible amount of money. they will probably make a Barbie sequel with a higher budget, around 200 mio dollars, but only earn 500-600 mio on the sequel, which isn't bad, but will be diminishing returns.
Of course, all of this assumes that Hollywood will still exist in a year which is not a guarantee. WB had this ONE box office hit in a year where everything else failed horribly, they are all big money pits where money goes to vanish and has been for a long time, so now it's finally just headed for collapse, which made the actors and writers panic, why they are not striking to ensure job security... Job security in a failing market where they need to cut so much stuff just to stay above water and cut down in budget on everything.
The giga structure that could protect these things and push them forward is crumbling, it has been for a long time, but we are at a critical point, and it is entirely possible it is all just going to fall down and collapse within a year.
Giving the perfect opportunity for alternative sources of media and entertainment to step in and pick up the slack, Anime, k-Drama, RUclipsrs, and independent studios such as Angel Studios are there and ready for their moment. And while they are not as huge as Hollywood, they have a solid foundation making them so much more robust.
So yeah... While this Barbie movie maybe saved WB from its immediate collapse, the aftermath of chasing this buzz is assured to bring them a slower more desperate collapse in the coming years.

Just finished the video on 1.5x speed while feeding and changing my baby, as a man. Much patriarchy. This video is excellent but I have tow points I feel are worth raising:
    1) I absolutely cannot wait until this film gets a home release. I am willing to bet money that within one month, there will be multiple "fan" edits that even further cement that Ken is the hero of the film and Barbie the villain. I may or may not be one of the people making that edit
    2) The screed. The rant about "Barbie's" role as a woman strikes me really as a rant about "barbie" not knowing her place or station in the world and society. And I can't help but think that all of the problems that she has such as women having to be careerists and mothers at the same time is a self inflicted wound created by feminism itself. My wife, who is a Doctor herself for what it is worth, was quick to point out about her experience when we were watching reviews of the Barbie movie that never ever at any point ever has it been men that she has seen judging women about their life and career choices, only other women.

Women seem to think that every one of them will get to be a girlboss or something. It's almost painful to think of them discovering, as men do, that those top spots too often go, not to the worthy, but the most amoral, vicious and manipulative among us. Painful, but also funny.

It is satire! 😇 The plight of the Kens is designed to be an exaggerated version of what happens to women who are treated as accessories... but the film is also self-aware enough that it says in as many words that the real world isn't that sexist... which is why there is literally a scene where Ken gets schooled that in the real world, being a man doesn't entitle him to be a doctor unless he is actually qualified and a woman who is qualified CAN be a doctor or anything else. I'm not doing it justice because its really funny but it deliberately rebutts the idea that being a man is a cheatcode for life.
Likewise, the character of Sasha (the hateful girl who calls Barbie a "fascist" is SUPPOSED to be off-base. She's a satire of a certain type of angry gender-Maoist who is literally so stupid and woke that she berates her own white father for daring to speak Spanish, a language that literally comes from Europe in the first place.

You nailed it. This was a grotesque watch. This is the most transed, anti-straight, anti-nuclear family propaganda piece I've ever seen. There is no shred of passion or romance in here. Not one frame sincerely depicting a man and a woman getting along - they're always turned against each other. Ken is very blatantly set up to be Barbie's foe - the toxic man standing in the way, who apologizes by the end and admits he didn't even know what he was pushing for. If the narrative has a bad guy, it's all men in the world added up to one - one problem. A problem that needed to be "fixed", going by the dialogue of the film. Any kind of passionate writing in a modern narrative where men and women end up on the same page at the end is deemed toxic and dangerous in 2023.
Notice how the actual ending of Barbie hammers its anti-straight, pro-trans message home by saying that anyone can be a woman - even a doll with nothing down there (a detail that is fully established within the narrative) can carve out the right looking parts and that's all there is to it. Before you get to leave, Mattel's multi-million dollar motion picture Barbie smacks you and your family in the face with these words: "TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN!"

    A new synopsis for the Barbie movie, which in my mind I have now renamed Ken's Journey;
"A story of a man trapped not just in a misandrist, profoundly unjust Matriarchal dystopia, but also in a relationship with a manipulative, narcissistic, borderline psychotic abuser. It all seems so bleak, and yet this man, so downtrodden, mocked and marginalised, sees a glimpse into another way of life. He sees what an equal society could be, and finds the inner strength to defy the culture which victimised him, and the woman who rejected his love and abused his good character, to break free and take back control of his life. Inspiring, uplifting, life-affirming - Ken is a new kind of hero for 2023. He is... Kenough!"
I love it when fanatics go so far off the deep end that they accidentally highlight all the glaring flaws in their own delusional beliefs, and it seems Barbie has emerged as pretty much the Mount Everest of self-owns.
