Why Are Splatoon Fans So Gay?

- I’ve always found it interesting that Splatoon has so many LGBTQ+ people in its community, especially online. So I wanted to get into why I think that is.
I want to clarify I discovered Jack Penaloza’s video right after I finished editing this video. It’s a really great video and I recommend checking it out! • Why Splatoon 3 is SO GAY

people commenting with their stories on how they realized they were a part of the LGBTQ community because of this game makes me so emotional it makes me so happy
(and thank you for proving my point that splatoon fans are gay af)
Because they're allowed to, jeez bruh way to get cancelled.( Also if you're talking about Asriel from Undertale that game is very gay and has wonderful representation of the LGBTQ+ community.) And not all members of the LGBTQ+ community are gay, it's not rocket science.
@OctopusOdditySangoyou no what else isn't rocket science understanding that the term gay is also used to describe everyone who is part of the LGBTQ community ok it's a bit stupid but why are you so mad and what do u mean because they are allowed to like yes they are but why are there so many drawn to this game like if I asked multiple gay and straight people if they prefer spicy or sweet flavour and more of the percentage of gay people preferred sweet(let's say 95%) but only 80% of straight men said they liked sweet over spicy why would u not ask why like calm the hell down it's not that deep(idk why the @ didn't work lol)
I had a splatoon phase for like 3 months and then realized I was gay a month later tho I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with splatoon tbh

How? They're just weird for assuming that lol
Both of u are so right that’s why I keep secret
Im gay, and i still have people assume im gay right away when i say i like Splatoon 😭
Same. I just keep the fact i play this game a secret atp
It's kind of a shame. I think people would like it, the music is cool (though a bit strange), the stories are great, the lore massive, the gameplay fun, but people have to keep it a secret because of these assumptions.
splatoon did not make me gay but hanging out with a lesbian couple cosplaying as pearl and marina at comic con did make me a splatoon fan. being gay made me a splatoon fan.
real..
having a 90% female cast also really helps, the only 3 not side characters and not villain of one specific game characters are Cuttlefish, DJ Octavio, and big man, and in 90% of Promotional Material the protagonists are female so you can say Canonically all protagonists are most likely female, especially agent 8 because she is an ex Octoling soldier which are clearly almost all female
Splatoon is very punk inspired. And punk has been an open space since it's origins!
Even funnier Pearlina evidence. Marina drew a Shoujo manga where she was described as an stereotypical clumsy girl with Pearl being her saviour. And in Three Wishes, the lyrics say some things like "Having you by my side makes today perfect" and "My heart's synched up, a satellite, orbiting wherever you are." (Great video by the way)

As a straight Splatoon fan, I just liked how colorful the franchise is, how adaptable the controls are, Callie and Marie's entire existence, and the character design of the Inklings in general. I just mostly loved how Nintendo gave us a new franchise since the Wii/Mii/Tomodachi Collection franchise back in 2015 and how different of a game it is compared to your Mario, your Zelda, your Metroid, and your Animal Crossing games.
Also, there is a lot of romantic tension between Ryley and Mizo from Wet Floor when you look at their lore. Enemies to lovers, indeed. Just a small side note for those of us who know that Splatoon didn’t make us gay.
As a trans guy, I love splatoon. It is very safe and welcoming to people like me.
Also the "Splatoon very clearly is a game for kids" Omg no it's not. It's a game for everyone. Just because it's cartoony and colorful doesn't mean it's FOR kids. It was created with kids in mind, but it isn't FOR kids. Nintendo of America just made it that way when actually, it was intended to be marketed towards teens. I mean, the inklings and octolings are literally teens
Splatoon made me a nonbinary lesbian
So they turned you into deadf1sh

i’m one of you i promise haha
I've seen a lot of people try to answer this but i think its a lot more simple then people think. splatoon is just one of those series that tends to attract outcasts weather gay disabled or religious. we were all just the weird kid in school that played splatoon over cod and Fortnite.
Don’t say we this “splatoon is gay” bs was not a thing until like splatoon 3

i think another factor is actually the lack of in game voice chat. without the ability to communicate directly with your team, the game avoids a lot of the rampant toxicity and bigotry that other shooters have.
I'll always hold dear the fact that this franchise was the main reason I started questionning my gender in the first place, Splatoon genuinely turned me gay and I think thats awesome
The first time I payed as a boy in a game was splatoon
Splatoon was my 8 yearold selfs first step to being trans
NO BUT SAME just the other way around, i only played as the girl since i was smol
honestly splatoon 1 was the first game that I really used to explore being trans in a safe way, being able to choose to be a boy and to express my sense of style in that way really went a long way in cementing the idea of being trans for me like "yeah I can just Be a Guy if I wanna. this rules actually."
Splatoon is the first game where I presented myself as a girl (and had gender euphoria)
game extremely themed about counterculture natrually attracts members of a counterculturegame, and also it lacks the toxicity of a lot of shooters
Hard to be toxic with no ingame chat feature. The best thing, Nintendo could ever do for their games.
@@LG555 as a semi-casual smash, splatoon, and pokemon unite player, people have their ways.
@@Pyrote-xg9zi heard about the friend requests getting used, but at least, Nintendo also seems to aware of this, since you can report people for doing this.
Oh hi Ti_Mona!
@SHEEAAGH oh hey!!
I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I actually like the fact that the octolings have different eyes based on their sex. When i got into the series during Splatoon 2, I hadnt realized i was nonbinary transmasc yet and played as an octoling girl. Now in Splatoon 3, my player character dresses more masculine, has short hair, but still has the "girl" eyes. I like to think of it as a visual indicator that my octoling is trans.
I remember seeing these cool Inkling characters when Splat2 was about to release all those years ago and my Primary-School brain was amazed, but alongside all those years up until my current Splat3 years, Splatoon has been a cool blanket that shielded me from loved ones and a world that despised me for liking guys... Splatoon 2 and the nostalgia it holds in my heart today has been by my side and has not only inspired me to be myself, but to also be the coolest non-squid kid I can be irl. Thank you Splatoon🤍
Bro that’s so relatable🥹🥹🥹

Better question is why are Splatoon fans so incredibly toxic? Never seen a more unwelcoming, unfriendly fandom out there. Not even being limited to just video games.
True
It's pretty alarming. Weren't their actual death threats going around over shiver's gender? How do you get so bent out of shape because you misunderstood a fictional anthropomorphic magical squid's gender? You can get frustrated at a game but spreading genuine hate is unacceptable.
I've genuinely not seen anything really toxic bout splatoon, but I'm also not on stuff like Twitter. Where are you finding these toxic fans? XD
@@readyplayerthree3I've found these people on Twitter, Reddit, BlueSky, and Discord. It's just anywhere that the fandom is talked

@@unl3ash3d95theres straight relationships in kids games all the time. look at like mario and peach or link and zelda or whatever. why would the fact that splatoon is a kids game be a barrier to depicting a relationship?
@@unl3ash3d95 a lot of people... thats why there are art books for every installation that go in-depth about the story modes. saying no one gaf is simply wrong cuz if no one cared, the games and franchise would be dry asf. no one really cared that much abt pearl and/or marina UNTIL octo expansion, ie their storymode.
5:47 THIS SOUNDS SO FUNNY WHEN YOU ARENT LOOKING AT THE VIDEO
the lovestory of pearl in marina both in and out of the game it'self is so fucking wholesome and I love it. the power of lesbianism has saved the day time and time again (also in JP pearlina is way more ehavily implied, obvious, and basiclal confirmed just without them litterally saying "btw we're gay" the localization has fucked with a lot of the lore stuff too but its not THAT bad)
“Queer” and “Splatoon Player” is more of circle than a venn diagram. I’m in the circle too 😭
The atypical approach to violence is a big thing, it was for me. It wasn’t about killing people in replayed wars, and the “weapons” were hilarious and didn’t take themselves seriously at all. When I saw Splatoon 3 in a direct some years ago it was eye opening. A fresh, fun game with otherworldly music and style and a thoughtful underlying story. I felt like I could be myself.
Yeah, the objective not being to actually kill the others directly was always what made Splatoon cool (it won best shooter of 2015 for a reason), and also why Splatoon 3 is so much worse than the other two games with how it forces splatting other players to be the direct course of action
@ Ah interesting! I haven’t played the other two games (have watched only) - my interest keeps increasing for the first two
I really love how a lot of the points can be carried over to many other Nintendo games in general. Nintendo as a company has always been know for experimenting with new, creative, and strange ideas along with making things for not just kids but really anyone of any age and gender to enjoy so it makes a lot of sense for them to support us in the way that they have. Even so, every game is unique in its own way and Splatoon has many things that stick out about it compared to any other game so I also like how this is speaking about Splatoon specifically first and not making comparisons.
@@Sonias_Alive_Counterpart ur very right id love to make a video of exploring other forms of representation (including LGBTQ) across nintendo games because i think its very interesting!
This is one of those things in the community that everyone acknowledges but doesn't really question lol. The point about creating your own character is so true! Since protagonists tend to fit a preestablished mold, creating a character if your own to identify with allows for each person to feel represented. I think Nintendo knows this by now, and the way they've embraced it in Splatoon 3 is the best case scenario considering how it's not widely accepted in some places. Great video!
thank you!
Someone in the bus saw me play Splatoon and asked me "are you gay"... I was like "da fuq are you asking, no" at that moment I didn't realize why he asked me since I don't look gay in the slightest and then later I realized it was because i was playing Splatoon and my Nintendo case is also Splatoon 2

Splatoon did not make me gay, I knew I was pan before playing it. What got me into Splatoon was the fact that Im autistic and the universe decided that Splatoon would be my biggest, most long-lasting hyper fixation. (Also, Acht and Orion being non binary were mistranslations from Japanese to english. However, if you still want to believe they are, I understand why, but it"s not canon. There's a lot of mistranslations and localization in these games that game me trust issues. It's something to look out for.)

Because it’s colorful, has a lot of character customization, and doesn’t have voice chat.
I can't point out hard enough, how much more welcoming Splatoon is, because it forgoes any form of communication, though this goes for a lot of Nintendo's online games.
i cracked up when i red that title
I remember when Splatoon 1 came out, it actually did help me work through my gender/sexuality when it came out. And then not having to pick a gendered option in Splatoon 3 felt so liberating! ❤
woah, I had no idea. I do engage with the fandom but not that much, I actually spend most of the time inking XD
however, I did notice that people are very supportive, like, in the plaza and stuff.
and not surprisingly I'm trans and gay haha
With all honesty i'm still in a dillema if i consider myself bisexual or straight, because i'll be sincere, i can get attracted to males but like i only want to get romantically envolved with women and not men as an gay couple (If anybody gets confused i'm a man)
I remember when I first played splatoon 1 and didn’t like the male inkling so I played as a female inkling knowing that I was a guy, and then later on I realized I was gay lol
4:18 Do not tell this to Rorschach!
"Black and white moving. Changing shape… but not mixing. No gray. Very, very beautiful."
Not to nitpick, but since the interface centers behind the character, it is actually a "2nd Person" shooter, combining the 1st person perspective with a 3rd person perspective for a more "action/adventure" interface. This is actually my favorite style of shooter, & ironically iconic of Rockstar games, who utilize it in games like Grand Theft Auto & Red Dead Redemption
I'm bi and I got into splatoon with the first game. Absolutely nothing to do with lgbt obviously, it was honestly just sheer coincidence the fandom ended up also being very queer hehe. But as a kid growing up in a pretty unaccepting home (online environment in the 2010s didn't help), I do remember finding a ton of peace and comfort in the community
Man, internet culture back then is very different from today. It was like a wild west where people could say things that would be insane to say irl and that included using the word "gay" as an insult not to mention the that other word to describe gay people that starts with "fa-". The 2010s was a transition period where things may have been funny to say in some circles are now taboo and no longer acceptable to slur out pretty much anywhere on the internet. Safe to say, the wild west days of the internet have come to an end.
I first got into splatoon with splatoon 2.
at the time, I was a cishet boy just enjoying the fun paint game
Fast forward to today:
I am now a Transbian playing splatoon 3 :3
Splatoon made me subconsiously realise I was trans when octo expansion dropped.
I kept seeing octolings in the lobby and wanted to be one myself. And so, noticing that the majority of the octolings I saw were fem, I changed my inkling's character from male to female in the hopes that I could somehow be an octoling. Of course I didn't become one... but I stayed playing with the female inkling, and when I eventually brought octo expansion, I played with a female octoling too.
and then, a few years later, the pieces just clicked in my brain and I was just like: "ooohhhhh it all makes sense now."
Great video :3

For some reason almost everything I like has a primarily gay audience. I'm not sure what that says about me or the media I consume.
It also clear the game has an urban bend (urban as in city life) and punk culture, which has always been far left and queer accepting.
I make animations based off the game and I love it!
i got into splatoon when i was 14 when splatoon 3 was announced and have been obsessed with it since. i think one thing i love so much is how artistic is
I feel like the biggest and gayest thing in this game is how your gender doesn't matter in this game
wherever you interpret your octo/inkling as a male girl or anything in beetween, the game still gives you the option of having ANY clothes you wanna wear
In older games you needed your ink/octoling to be a girl to have a skirt with the inkling girl amiibo, now anyone can. Same with the win emotes, I personally am a bit more feminin than the average straight men so I like the twirl hoop thingy as a win emote :3

Pearl and marina also share a bed this is said in the side order 😊
I just have a weird history with Splatoon's LGBTQ fandom, simply because I just can't wrap my head around it. I grew up in a purely straight household, at least enough to sorta cement into my head the simple concept "guy loves girl, girl loves guy". Now whenever I see homosexual/lesbian couples I just go "oh ok", but subconsciously, I think I just keep asking myself: "I really did see this?".
And that's why I stop sharing my opinion that Pearlina is overhyped/overrated, because everytime I did, I ended up becoming the controversial target of the post in whichever social I say it on, despite me saying it as politely as possible (thanks for nothing, r/splatoon).
Asking why Splatoon fans are gay is like asking why the Earth is spherical
Splatoon and the community helped me feel better about me being gay
I was a Splatoon fan before i came out as trans and lesbian. So uh... I think I played a lot of Splatoon because uh... Welp im queer now! And i have a girlfriend!
It’s a shame to admit this but nowadays anything colorful is considered gay now and Splatoon is FULL of color which is why I like it as a straight dude, as well as the characters and gameplay, most fun shooter game Ive ever played.
Because they see the true path to the future, the only future worth having, a future that we're not a part of.
I've been playing since Splatoon 1, and *gods* this game and community HELLA GAY.
While I didn't realize I was queer specifically because of the Splatoon series, it was a constant in my life throughout my journey of self discovery. As I grew, so did these characters who I related so much to.
I'm so glad to have seen this community grow and thrive for the past ten years. Hopefully we all get gayer.
