  • In this very interesting examination of TCMA vs MMA, we have a Taiwanese self-proclaimed Tai Chi Master named Li Ming 李明 challenging MMA Mad Dog Panda Xu Xiaodong. And what's more: Yang Tai Chi Li Ming actually has footage of himself testing his Tai Chi (and Bagua too) against two different boxers in Taiwan. Let's bring in Rob and analyze how well this Tai Chi master does in the ring. Is there any efficacy in his boxing? Could he really take on Xu Xiaodong? Also, what do you think about Li's interesting approach to holding his hands in the ring.

The so-called Tai Chi master had absolutely no footwork. This allowed the 2 boxers to set their punches eventually knocking down this so-called master. Because the so-called master also had a poor defence and his punches were not technically sound and so comparatively generated very little power, the boxers really had free reign to throw clean shots at will. You have to give the so-called master some credit though for sticking it out for 2 rounds against 2 different fighters who look much younger and have more boxing experience than himself but I think he was too old and unprepared for this type of sparring. In boxing this is called a mismatch. He should stick to what he does best (if he is indeed a tai chi master as claimed) and leave Xu Xiaodong to younger, hungrier and more suitable fighters.

Because Taiwan got compulsory military service and in the army they are trained in TKD, Chinese boxing (which is very similar to MMA) and kick boxing. So, I think he know those boxing skills he just want to use Tai Chi to win to prove it is a valid fighting style. But I think that is going to be very hard, Tai Chi is design mainly for health not combat, you can use it as basic self defense, if you are trained in that manner, but, it won't work very well in the ring.

It’s almost always best to stick to what your good at but know what you’re weak to and try to mitigate those weaknesses, ie if you’re a kickboxer that’s best with punch combinations, stick with those, but know that bjj and wrestling exists, that doesn’t mean you need to learn wrestling, in fact it’s probably a terrible idea to try to just outwrestle someone who specializes in it. but it would be very useful to know how to stuff a guard and keep the fight on your feet

At least this guy had the courage to get up and actually challenge people instead of not showing anything until Xu Xiaodong challenges them. I don't see this guy taking him though, his defense is feeble and he shows little striking power. He does have some good endurance though at least for his age, but he'd need some Homer Simpson level level chin to not get his ass clapped by Xu Xiaodong and looking like he fell off a train afterwards.
