Why the Yamaha FZ6 is Still Relevant Today

  • If you're blazing fast on the track, buy an R6 or bigger. If not, don't bother.
    In this video, I make a case as to why the outdated FZ6 is still perfectly relevant today. Its inline-4 powerplant is plenty fast for most riders, yet it is perfectly comfortable for street riding and commuting.
    Riding was done through Santiago Canyon & Trabuco Canyon in Orange County, CA.

    Bought my FZ6 here in the UK IN 2005. I had her for 15 years until i had to stop riding due to having a minor stroke and started having blackouts. Broke my heart when i sold her. She was a brilliant bike for me to ride to work and ride outs around the UK and in other parts of Europe.

    I am also bought new FZ6 14 years ago brand new, it was my first step from owning 50cc to 600cc, absolutely no problem, bike drives itself, at first one needs to get used to its weight 200kg to not drop it on lights etc. always driver needs to focus to hold it firmly with steady feet on the ground. Later it comes automatically. That was just beginners msg.. Now I have 67.000km, engine drives like new, in fact the whole lot drives like new. I dropped it 2 times, replaced all front plastics, new (custom sporty more down facing) handlebars, few dips still on tank but you wear it you tear it like.. drives and looks perfect. I bought LED taillight with integrated indicators (120$) dont buy cheap, buy this more expensive looks and work amazingly.. using michelin pilot road 4, best tyres for this bike in my opinion for road driving like, fitted heated hanldebars and fried my alternator rotor, so dumped them away, bought new alternator rotor part, drives like new again.. I am not planning to get rid of it soon and for sure will stay with me couple more years.. also got scorpion carbon exhaust pipes, when driving in group they tell me, they dont here their noise, they all hear mine 😁✌ so loud.. happy driving!

    I have the same red, grip sticker and similar exhaust (two brothers silver series carbon fibre) really helps the sound and feels 5x better. Not to mention the amount of heads i turn now. Wouldnt trade it for anything else at this point. Not a supersport but all in all best road bike you could ask for. Also my insurance see's it as a 2cyl 599 and not a 4cyl 600cc.

    Not my first bike. More like my 18th bike and I love it. With an exhaust it becomes a musical instrument with all the different wonderful noises it can make Fueling is spot on, no flat spots. It handles ok, but like any bike, you can make adjustments to make it much better. I use it as a daily driver and I alternate between a Superduke and this bike on the weekends in the canyons. The Superduke is night and day better in the canyons but this one is still a lot of fun (mostly seeing how much it can be improved with some fork preload and new oil, rear stock shock is surprisingly good, 2 piston brakes surprisingly good too), The FZ6 is night and day better than the supeduke as a daily driver. Way easier to split lanes with more narrow bars and lower seat height, 98 HP is plenty to do the job yet reserved enough to stay out of big trouble.

    I just picked up a 2008 as my first bike a few weeks ago. Some of my motorhead friends said I'll be wanting something more in six months. I just don't see it. The powerband is really tame down low but I'm not a drag racing idiot. It will go from 60 to 100 in a blink however. It's similar to my Infiniti G37 in that aspect. Drop it into 4th and she screams like a bat out of hell. I almost bought an SV650 and I'm soooo glad I didn't. This bike is much more refined on almost every level.

      @joedanero5360 3 года назад

      @@Paulie1978100 Yes Paul. I've been riding for 15 and own a few bikes. At this point I can't see myself selling the FZ6. It is just such a great all arounder. One could get a specialist bike like a cruiser, touring bike or super sport for all of their specialist functions. The FZ6 does it all well enough for my needs. It isn't the comfiest on 2hr+ jaunts without plush seating or the right set of bars. Not the most convenient on long trips without luggage or full fairings. Not as fast as a super sport, but is enough for those moments you're in the mood to go above its quirky 5-7k rpm "hey you should shift me now, but I'm lying" dead zone. The thing is that it can be adjusted for all of that. It has the power, but a cam and injection system can be done. Front end for added handling at a track(There is a such thing as the FZ6 Cup), Luggage and seating for convenience and comfort. It was a great platform.
      With that, it is a Jekyll and Hyde bike, but I think Yamaha was learning and doing all they could at the time to tame and reuse the engine for a sport entry. Essentially these are 03-05 r6 motors with a different cam, and injection system. I believe the valves were also different. Later on we see the same block on other bikes with more changes focusing on useable torque including with the FZ6R.
      Personally, I don't recommend this as a beginner bike to anyone unless they are 200+lbs and plan on riding it for some years to learn on. A 145lb young new rider might get too confident going too quick and learn a bad lesson. These bikes have very short throw clutches(I found a mod to help a little, touchy throttles, and a sketchy front suspension. And when the kid finds that 8k plus zone it'll likely be too addictive to stay out of. Just my opinion.
      I'm convinced that all of the above is why Yamaha eventually "fazed" them out to be replaced with the FZ6R plus the urge to compete in the 60-80hp market with the other mid-rang bikes of the era like the 650r and SV's.
      Back to your point. Yes. They are plenty enough power to smoke most vehicles on the road and they are not excessive for day to day use by any means. The FZ6 is low maintenance and low cost to purchase and maintain. It has a great sized gas tank. It is easier on the wrists and back. And it is enough of a blast to drive as a daily without being too much to lug around or being under equipped for the task. A true gem of a bike. I wish Yamaha would do a true MT-6 like they did the MT-10. With an R6 transplant. It would sell like hotcakes....Maybe throw in a half fairing though.

    I love mine, it's an 07 red with black frame. I looked up power ratings for the newer naked bikes and the fz6 actually makes 10-18 more hp than most of them. To me that's pretty good for a 2000 dollar bike, you get a lot of grunt for your money. This bike is and will be relevant for years to come just as superbikes from the 80s and 90s will still do the job.

After browsing Craigslist religiously for several weeks, I came across a 2005 FZ6 for under 2 grand that's in really good condition. Based on what you've said, it's the bike I never knew I needed! I love my '09 FZ6 dearly. It's my first bike and an absolute blast with that revvy inline four and eager handling. My one real complaint is the soft, non-adjustable fork. For that, I'm pulling the trigger on an 03/04 R6 fork that I'll get re-sprung/valved for my weight. The other minor annoyance is the back-sweep on the handle bar, which causes a little bit of fatigue in my wrists. I've got an FZ1 bar to take its place to correct that.

    • @FormulaJake
      @FormulaJake  4 года назад +3

      I completely agree! I've heard of quite a few riders making the swap to the R6 forks with good success. Let me know how it goes once you do! I'm really curious to how well it works out, because I may want to do the same thing someday.

      Besides a little 1973 Suzuki GT185 with less than 20hp, my FZ6 is my first "real" bike. I wouldn't recommend anything bigger/faster than it as a first bike. Thankfully it has enough distinction between tame mid-range and fast high-range. But it can be very difficult to avoid revving the crap out of it 😂 for this reason a beginner can really grow into the bike if done so carefully.

    • @davijow200
      @davijow200 4 года назад

      But it isn’t to heavy for a beginner? 220kg is a little bit dangerous for a beginner. I think to buy an FZ6 but I don’t have my first bike and it complains me. Sorry for bad English, bro

    • @Angel-HC
      @Angel-HC 4 года назад

      @@davijow200 I don't think it's too heavy for a beginner at 458 lbs wet. Like pretty much all sport bikes it's a little annoying to pick up if you drop it. Unlike most sport bikes, its power doesn't come on as aggressively. You can go full throttle in most scenarios without fear of picking up the front wheel. It's tuned to be fairly tame in that sense, and thus is fine for a beginner who has some self control.

      The FZ09 has a bit more power than the FZ6, and it rides pretty different. That 3 cylinder 900 is nice and powerful across a greater range of RPMs. And you can always add a windscreen to it if the wind is too much.
      As far as finances go, I'd recommend sticking with the FZ6, because it sure is nice not having a monthly payment! But that's up to you 👌🏼

    I bought my FZ6 new in 2007. Still have it, but at the same time, don't ride it much. It has yet to hit 8k miles and the paint is in great shape being that it's garage kept. I finally went ahead and got new tires this past Saturday as the originals were just too old to use safely. Only other things I've replaced have been oil and batteries. Amazing part is that even after sitting for months without starting, it always cranked right up. Great bike.

    A little strange video, because the FZ6 also had a completely naked version without the half fairing and the FZ07 and 09 both have half fairing version in the Tracer 700 and 900. I owned a 2007 FZ6 naked S2 and a Tracer 700. The FZ6 was the better long distance touring bike and more fun to ride fast. The Tracer 700 was more capable at slower speed (more torque) but worse at long distance riding because it had more vibrations.

      The SV650 is a great bike! It all depends on what you're looking for. I have had minimal time with one, but it is generally preferred to ride an SV for track use due to the plethora of mods available, and compatibility with Gixxer parts. However, the FZ6 is similar, as it is compatible with R6 parts, but generally not as track-worthy. Most prefer the FZ6 for street, as it is very tame under 7-8k RPMs, but is faster in a straight line than the SV, once the engine gets revving. Neither are bad choices!

    These bikes aren't great starter bikes for a number of reasons and that's why I think Yamaha phased them out the way they did with the inferior FZ6R. The FZ6 is the mt06 of its day to its R6 counterpart for the time just as the mt10 is today to the R1. The overlapping phasing out of the FZ6 for the FZ6R was a decision I am still trying to wrap my head around. I currently believe that Yamaha saw trouble with putting a bike like this with it's price range into the hands of new riders in the same market that were buying 650R's and SV650's, which were bikes still deadly enough to get a new rider into a lot of trouble quickly, but were all a recipe for disaster.
    The FZ6 S1 ungoverned can put a good slap down on both of those bikes in high speed highway play. And it still holds it's ground with newer bikes in class today like the MT07.
    As an owner myself and an experienced rider I almost believe that Yamaha made a conscious decision to take these bikes off of the market because they are too good and also too bad to put new riders on. The 250-300 market hadn't taken off at the time like today and the only decent option for a performance small displacement that could cruise at highway speeds at the time was the original ninja 250 which is still a great beginner option if you can snag one up. A lot of Americans couldn't see themselves starting out on a "baby" bike even though the older generations that were now on larger displacement bikes where happy to tell you about and very familiar with their smaller displacement roots of the 60' and 70's. The FZ6 was ready to be infamous for running higher than all other bikes in it's class.
    Unironically, Suzuki came out with a response to the FZ6 with the only true FZ6 competitor the GSR600. In 2006 to the end of its production in 2010 two years after Yamaha cut the production on the FZ6 the GSR600 was the other 600cc Sport class killer.
    For one reason or another both companies decided to tame the HP down on their entry level sports classes to focus on lower top speed yet more torque centric variants for the market.
    In the end I think the idea of high speed deaths on lesser priced machines wasn't a good business model and hence the aboration that is the FZ6. A freak of it's time. Still relevant today.

    When you consider that the FZ07 makes over 20hp less than the fz6 and the fz8 only makes around 10hp (to the wheels) more, you can't really it doesn't feel more like an r6. It definitely feels more like it's Supersport cousin more so than the Bandit or z7 or something.

      I definitely agree with you. It's enough different to know it's not the supersport 600, but still a screaming 4 banger. It isn't even close to the naked bikes in terms of engine characteristics.

    I’m 6’4 with long legs, would this bike be uncomfortable?

      I'm only 5'10, so it's hard for me to say. But you'll have a good idea of how it will feel just by sitting on one. I imagine you'd be fine, though!

    It's down 4 hp vs. the 2003 R6 brother the base motor of the FZ
    ...not FAR LESS

      I know the FZ is based on the 2003 R6, but if you compare the 2004 FZ with a 2004 R6 (123hp) there is a drastic difference in horsepower
