OK, you were so right about the LLL Elcan and so right about the Thypoch Eureka that this and the more recent vid on the Thypoch Simera 50 pushed me over the edge. I took your advice and used your discount link to get on the list for this lens when it is produced for sale to the general public. You are batting 1000 so far and I bet you do the same on the 50mm Simera. Thanks for the help and advice.
For anyone interested, the Thypoch Eureka 50mm f2 is on sale here in the UK at WEX for only £443. Not a happy bunny...got mine sent across from B&H in NYC a short while ago and it definitely did not cost £443! I'm sure I checked at WEX at the time, but that's life. Zero regrets...seriously thinking about getting the brass version cos I love the lens so much. That would be a bit self indulgent though.
Man these guys are knocking it out of the park. I really want a 60s summilux but it's hard to ignore this one with so much functionality and when the photos would be almost the same or even better thanks to close focussing!
Nice video Matt. The close-focusing capability on digital mirrorless cameras (assuming the lens performs well close-up and at infinity) is extremely useful. I have the new close-focusing versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 and Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4. They’re outstanding and highly versatile lenses. I love Budapest (it’s one of my favorite European cities too). I’ve been there 4 times, but was only there for a few hours when I was at a meeting in Visograd this past June.
The sample photos, as always, look great, BUT -- suppose my M-mount camera does NOT support an EVF, making the 0.45m minimum focus distance useless. Would there be any other reason to trade in my 50mm f/1.5 Voigtlander Nokton II (which seems to be more compact, and has a more sensibly located focusing ring and a non-gimmicky DOF scale) and get this instead? I seem to recall that Matt didn't like the Nokton much, but I don't remember why...
Hmm yes I skipped the Nokton II but maybe I’ll try it again one day. Yes it was less super sharp wide open but I don’t mind that now. Yes stick with what you have if won’t use 0.45m or get the f2. My favourite.
Thanks, Matt. I plan to get my first Leica M, and I'm trying to decide on which 50mm lens to get. I've narrowed it down to Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar or this 50mm Simera. Which would you select to give the best all round performance and flexibility if you were not getting another 50mm. Many thanks. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Matt. I enjoyed the vidoe. Budapest is a great city. Looks like a great lens. For a fast 50mm I still really on my Voightlander 50mm f1.5 which I love and does quite a nice job also. keep up the good work
Great review Matt, it's a really tempting lens as the 28mm Simera I own is fantastic (and my go to lens 80% of the time). Thypoch are probably my favourite third party for M mount lenses at the moment. You have a lot more experience with lenses, which third party is your favourite?
I love my Simera's,- 28mm 35mm f1.4 I knew this 50mm was a killer and it is on my tobuylist and should join his brothers very soon in my bag. Thanks for the excellent Video
Your Thumbnail says 0.45mm I was really lost until I started watching the video what that figure could mean, didn't think it's about closest focus distance LOL
Matt has reviewed that lens. It’s on his blog and I think there was a video. It’s a good lens based on an old design (pre-aspherical Summilux 35mm I think) with different coatings and great ergonomics.
Some people ask me about them so I started to mention them. Lots of Leica users enjoy both. (Almost all of the Leica UK marketing team are ex-watch co employees) Huge overlap.
Matt, I would not even touch a 50mm lens from an Chinese manufacturer, regardless how good they are. Yes, you can call me sinophobe. I would rather go for Voightländer they don't need to make look-a-like lenses like the Chinese competition.
Voigtländer are made in Japan. I don’t get the ‘I don’t care how good it is/what great value for money it is’ I’d never put a Chinese lens on my Leica’ response. Some of the Thypoch and Light Lens Lab lenses are super….much better than 7Artisans/TTArtisan, and at least as good as Voigtländer to my mind. (There’s no ‘h’ in Voigtländer, by the way).
It’s not an equivalent comparison, nor does everyone with an M camera have an M11. Now, I do and I have a summilux asph 50 but when people say stuff like this you sound like a prick.

Thanks Sandy, yes I love all those mentioned lenses, especially the smaller 2 but the Simera has its own benefits.

Do they have a brass version??
Thanks for info. Great lens for sure!

Yes on digital Ms especially 0.45m is so good and for film it’s sharp enough vs Pre which needs stopping down to f2 for film.
Love the Eureka. On the Zf with the Voigtlander close focus adapter it’s awesome as you get as close as 30cm MFD!
Eureka has more character. Great lens!
Nice video Matt.

Thanks John, agree the 0.45m is a huge benefit.
It looks like a really good lens, well used in the video.
Thanks Sandy, yes nice rendering.
I own both Thypoch 35mm/F1.4 and 50mm/F1.4. I see 50mm with improvement on clearer aperture click, and smoother focus operation
Yes, nice recessed internal focusing too.

I’ve got both, APO is sharper but this does all you need.

Thanks! I like small lenses so LLL, the Eureka as shown and ofc Voigtlander.
I was there the last 2 weeks of October!! Maybe we could've bumped into each other! 😂
I think I just missed you!
I love my Simera's,- 28mm 35mm f1.4
I knew this 50mm was a killer and it is on my tobuylist and should join his brothers very soon in my bag.
Thanks for the excellent Video
Thanks Grom, yes I think you’ll like it!
Beautiful lenses. The models weren't bad either.
Haha thanks! I try to please on all fronts
Hi Matt. How good is this lens?
Watch this video I just made to tell people my thoughts
I went to that store in Budapest. Nice people
Great! He recognised me and said hi.
Hi Matt, which one is a better performer the ttartisan 50 or the thypoch 50/1.4 in 3d Pop, sharpness and Rendering?
Hard to tell without shooting both side by side. TTA looks like the Lux. See that video.
I’ve been thinking of getting the Chinese watch you showed here. What do you think of it?
Great movement for the price. Google it, it’s highly recommended by the watch nerds.
What kind of magnification would you get with close focus adapter on the SL2
Probably twice as close as shown so pretty impressive!
Your Thumbnail says 0.45mm I was really lost until I started watching the video what that figure could mean, didn't think it's about closest focus distance LOL
Sorry! Yes MFD (best feature about this lens verses others)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom All good, just wanted to let you know. I am a noob, I guess people more into photography could have deduced it ;)
What about against the voigtlander 40 f1.4? Limited by the framelines on the m3 but still want a small fast lens
Matt has reviewed that lens. It’s on his blog and I think there was a video. It’s a good lens based on an old design (pre-aspherical Summilux 35mm I think) with different coatings and great ergonomics.
40 wins for size. I still have mine.
How does it compare to the 50 summilux asph v1?
See that video and the TTA 50 video and see what you think. I’ve not shot both side by side yet but the Thypoch has much better bokeh from f2.
IDK it's really long IMO for an EDC 50
Yes I use the f2 as my EDC
What have watches to do with lenses? Pls stay on yr roots.
Some people ask me about them so I started to mention them. Lots of Leica users enjoy both. (Almost all of the Leica UK marketing team are ex-watch co employees) Huge overlap.
That hood isn’t gonna do much!
Not from low sun anyway. Lens is coated so doesn’t really need it.
Matt, I would not even touch a 50mm lens from an Chinese manufacturer, regardless how good they are.

No I book them. See my ebooks. I’ll make a photo book when I find time but all models get all photos.
lets get leica and compliment its history and style with awesome chinese lenses
Haha I did say get a Leica lens if you can afford it.
How do you not fall in love with your models? I would be bashful in their presence.
Perv.
That’s the major difference between a guy with a camera making them uncomfortable and a professional photographer
Haha after 1500+ photoshoots it gets easier
Using a cheap PRC lens on an $8000 Leica M is like mounting economy (?PRC-made) tyres on a Porsche 911.
Yes I did say for those that can afford it buy a Leica lens.
It’s not an equivalent comparison, nor does everyone with an M camera have an M11. Now, I do and I have a summilux asph 50 but when people say stuff like this you sound like a prick.
250g is a "heavy" lens?
Um, maybe Matt should hit the gym a bit more!
Why do you lack education?
@@Zetaphotography
Why do ask incredibly ignorant and stupid questions?
Haha I did explain myself (and yes I train most days). I’m always travelling so small always wins.
Thanks Matt -Thypoch seems to be putting out some nice products. Right now, I’m really thinking about the Eureka. I liked your review on that as well.
