  • Tool Reaction. Sober Reaction.
Perfection. Just because I sit there straight-faced does not mean I'm not feeling anything.
This song goes in the Got Me in the Feels category of reactions alongside Chevelle's "Remember When," Type O's "Anesthesia," and Nothing More's acoustic version of "This is the Time." Bravo, Tool. Bravo.

Yes! Personally I usually don't even like knowing what the actual meaning of a song is, as I find it more satisfying to discuss theories of what the song might potentially be about. Unless it's like a story where knowing enhances the listen. Otherwise I like to apply my own interpretations based on how it relates to me and my experiences. This is one of the many reason I love tool. Most of their songs have lyrics that are very subjective and can have different meanings and interpretations depending on the listener.

This song was sung about a friend of Maynard and his fight with alcohol. Which has become an iconic song for anyone with any form of addiction except. Paul's wonderful and brutal bass playing at it's finest. Almost all just open Ds and D played as an Octave at the same time...just pure D goodness with masterful muting and picking. So much tension in this song and it's mostly the bass.

Your interpretation is correct, of course, because it is yours. For me, I go back and forth between your interpretation and one in which the "I am just a worthless liar" bit is the addict himself, in how he deals with the people close to him.

I love the reaction and I got the same meaning out of it that you did. At the same time, I have thought that the "I am just a worthless liar" section could also be the addict speaking. Maybe the first time it's the substance and the second time it's the addict because of the effects of the substance? There are so many ways to take the song, but whatever works for the listener is the right one! Also, BASS. I think I said it before, but Tool was one of the first bands that made me realize that the bass could be cooler than the guitar and it was thanks to this song.

The hardest part of the Tool library to me, is I put all their music up against the Undertow album

I don't know what it is. I tried multiple times to grow into Tool. Nothing works. And that while I know that Opeth fans mostly like Tool too. It's such a different approach to music that I don't see the similarities. Someone help me out. What is it I do wrong? Tool's music just doesn't fit me (until now)....

I know a guy who’s a big Opeth fan that hates Tool. Says they’re too boring. I’m a big fan of both. You can’t force yourself to like something.

@@dutchmastah07 🙂 Given your name I assume you're a Dutchman. 😉🤘🍺

If you don't like them then you don't like them, no big deal. Tool isn't for everyone.

Dear awesomely, outstandingly neurotic nerd, is it that straightforward? How about the double negative in the chorus? “Why can’t we not be sober...”

    • @MusicCatsandCoffee

Straightforward and perfect. Not to be overdramatic, but the double negative is everything. :)
