- Photographer Kevin Carter took a photo of a young girl during a period of intense national famine in Sudan. The sudan famine would reveal many horrors in the country. The photo had a deep affect on him which would eventually cost him his life. This is the story behind that photograph.

Henry Kissinger, a man who wasn't known for being soft-hearted, said "America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests." The US Government thought it was in their best interests to give food aid to African nations because an unstable government full of millions of starving, desperate people is definitely everyone's problem. North Korea is another example of that. The North Koreans will go along with anything their government tells them to do, and their government is currently trying to build missiles loaded with nuclear warheads that can reach the continental United States. Even if you lack basic human empathy, you might be intelligent enough to understand that nations like this, regardless of where they are, are indeed everyone's problem.

I've heard people deride him for not helping the child in the photo, and call him heartless for leaving her, but it wasn't a Hollywood movie and there were tens of thousands of little children just like the child in the photograph. It is an intensely sad story.

@@agbonungozi7861 The problem there is systemic. It's not just one starving child, it's thousands of starving children. If they had given the child food, chances are they would have just kept her alive for a few days more and prolonged her suffering. Giving the child a bit of food once wouldn't have solved the problem, not for that particular child nor for the society.
You don't have to save 1,000 people. To help whoever you CAN help, is better than CHOOSING not to help any one of them. He felt guilty, because he knew for a FACT, that he could've done SOMETHING. But he CHOSE to do NOTHING.
@@thatfirstone what did you expect him to do, pick the child up, walk past the dozens of children in a similar situation, all in a country with zero infrastructure and while under military supervision?
Kevin is NOT alone. Many of us have seen and done things in our career that the average person would shutter. Mental health is so important yet sadly no help exists. I myself suffer from extreme PTSD and guilt all from doing my job and trying to help others. I have the utmost compassion for that man.
The world is filled with nightmares and unfortunely you don't have to be asleep to experience them

Schindler was haunted by the little girl in the red coat, and Kevin was haunted by the little girl next to the vulture. Tragic, needless, senseless suffering.

I’ve been waiting and hoping someone would soon cover Kevin and the little girls story. I could never have dreamed it would be done with a level of journalism and compassion that Kevin would be proud of.
The world tutted their fingers at him- yet failed to act. They judged with such absolute venom, from the comfort of their homes, paid for with their 9-5 jobs, and reassured themselves “I could never” while they silently flicked the occasional dollar into a homeless persons hat, without ever so much as making eye contact with them.
I wish Kevin had understood that even if he had plucked this little girl off the street and sped her to the nearest hospital, she would have still died. The world isn’t a Hollywood movie.
There are no miracles to be found when a child’s organs have systematically shut down from abject starvation, HIV, parasites, dehydration.
But even if Kevin had appreciated that (which I’m sure he did to some level, he was hardly wet behind the ears)- there is something to be said for the weight of the worlds gaze. Especially when it gazes upon you with such a dispirited absence of compassion.
It’s what the world accused Kevin himself of doing.
All I know is that one looked toward, and another looked away.
Kevin’s gaze never lowered.
My eternal love and compassion to all who love Kevin, and to all who love the nameless little girl.

@@PeakedInterest I just happened to stumble across this channel and I’m absolutely astounded by the level of professionalism and compassion that fill most of your documentaries. DON’T EVER feel bad for doing this. Sane people realize how much effort has been put towards making these videos while others are no different from that hungry vulture.
It’s absolutely normal to feel the pressure so damn hard while juggling with mixed emotions from the fact that this type of content is being monetized along with haters that trash on you for doing this.
When things get tough, just take a step back and remember that you’re doing this to educate people on matters that will most likely never see the pages of a history book and you ABSOLUTELY DESERVE to be compensated for it!!!

While it can be challenging discerning when or if taking photos of tragedies becomes exploitative it’s pertinent to consider that an image such as Carter’s played a large part in alerting the world of what was occurring and motivated other countries to step up and help in a way that a written report would never have done. People who judged him likely couldn’t comprehend the scale of suffering that he was witnessing or the overwhelming sense of powerlessness he must of felt at the all encompassing tragedy surrounding him. It’s obvious he felt strongly about humanity and justice by the choices he made throughout his life and eventually the burden became too great.
Thank you for this documentary. I think Kevin was a good man in an impossible situation. He wanted so badly to change things, but what can one person do in the face of such violence and hate? I’m heartbroken that he never was able to see the true impact and power his work had. Rest in Peace Kevin, and all those who suffered in this senseless conflict.

My mom would tell me stories about her life during apartheid era, she saw many cruelty and horror during that sad chapter in our country's history. From the police brutality and unjust arrested to necklacing. She Unfortunately loss many family and friends during that period. I'm just extremely fortunate that I was born during the early 00s.
As a foreigner I heard stories on the news but it really never conveyed just how violent and oppressive it really was

I love how people every time do that - they pretend something does not happen until they see photo or a video. Only then they ask how can they help. But not in general, but for certain individual they see.

I wanted to express thanks for how compassionately you portrayed Kevin Carter in this video. I see so many people show the photo and calously deride him for not helping the child without looking into or adding any context about the fact about him as a person, about the situation and how he was apparently told to directly interfere nor was he allowed to and that there was food tents somewhat near by. But the situation was just so absolutely dire that there this one little girl was a drop in the bucket and this photo did, in fact, take his soul.
I'm an artist myself and so often people project what artists try to convey into the world with what we create/present as a judgement upon our soul, but the connection i feel to my work is really about expressing my view of the world with my soul. That's why terrible people can create such beautiful things and good people can create such terrible (not in quality but like this photo) things. Art is about making people stand up and take attention. Kevin certainly did that, and it cost him everything. It's a sobering reminder to me about the spiritual toll art can take on the artist.
and i know it's morbid to express this here, but i really hope that when more and more info about what actually happened in the delphi indiana murders of 2017 comes out that you'll be able/willing to cover more about it. Not now since everything is still under seal and there hasn't been a trial yet, but they finally made an arrest of a man who is somehow involved and is apparently the man in the final footage that one of the girls managed to capture before she and her friend were murdered. I haven't been following the case closely, knew of it through the stills from what little of the video have been released to the public, but once the arrest was made I quickly saw that there are just a number of people who have made it an absolute circus and have spun elaborate conspiracy theories. This is just to say I appreciate your humanity when approaching a number of these video topics that are used for clickbait with oft-repeated falsehoods.
The Delphi murders is a very common request but I dont cover active cases as I don't have the full information and police typically won't release any (public or private) until they're no longer involved actively. I will cover it eventually though.
This topic in particular really forced me to take a good look at what I have been doing here for the past year and ask myself if I'm a vulture too. It's been an unpleasant thing to live with for a couple of months

Visit an orphanage in a third world. You don't want to live after that. If babies and children can suffer so much. There is no point in life.
I saw people starving in the street in Brasil and it really shook me.

@Purpie Slurpie why would he have gotten shot? I'm seriously lost? He said he had to catch a flight, that's why he didn't help the poor child. Also he could have taken the photo and STILL help thr child.
Thank you for telling Kevin's story. I know that the tug f war between what it feels like to take those pictures and move on is pretty vicious all on its own. No matter how much aid was pushed to a country because of the reaction to the picture, the ones left behind would haunt one no matter what.
I think all we can do through the struggle of that is to remember that the storytellers are also why people are saved.
No matter what telling these kind of stories has a cost, and I don't think there is a way to change that.
Not only did Kevin tell that little girl's story though through his story those who don't or can't understand get another avenue to be better people.

The dual nature of man.. The moment he took the horrific photo, he was just the purest essence of his photographer self.. He wanted a pic that conveys.. That is a very artistic approach.. His passion for capturing that horror well depicted in the pic consumed him.. Once that was done, he moved on to the next area, probably for another equally artsy pic.. His professionalism and passion blinded him from other deterrent thoughts which, if engaged in, would have spoilt the picture.. But later as his heart realized how mechanically he had reacted in that moment and his action in the right way could have possibly saved the child or atleast prolonged her life by a few more hours or days.. That painful realization hit him hard causing him to lose all will to live on in this world.. The albatross around his neck got way too heavy for him to carry forward.. Personally, I feel he became much more human after his death as that proved beyond all possible doubt that he truly repented not saving the famine-struck child when he could have, at least AFTER taking the photo.. May his soul rest in peace.. 🙏🏻😔
I am not really happy with this narrative. Kevin had been struggling with drug addiction, he was also financial destitute and you left that part of his final letter out. Also, his good friend named Ken had died just months before. I’ve read several articles on how Kevin had been depressed for years before he ended things.
This isn’t bad journalism but it paints him as having guilt over his job, which I’m not sure was the reason he ended his life.
The questions Carter asked himself were quite astonishing, he faced and captured the purest forms of hatred and sadness and ended up dealing with the question of how and why.
There is no relating to the internal struggle he faced after what he must have seen but I can understand he could no longer fathom joy. We may never truly know if the tyres would have been lit otherwise or if the view of the vulture was our own, but they are important questions all the more.
You should be happy. The censorship you've had to put in some of your videos has barely affected them. Your story telling is so good that I can leave it running in the background and still pay attention, and even with some censorship its all so concise and informative that the censorship is just about irrelevant. Its all great really.
I try to get a video as unaffected as I can, it's a lot of back forth with RUclips about it but I genuinely fight for every photo and video I use because if I didn't feel they were necessary I wouldn't include them. It's nice to see that the weight of the video isn't lost by the minimal censoring I have to do

Dumb take. A career of taking photos of horrific acts plus mental health issues did it. Makes me angry when people are like oh he was fine then this one thing happened and he killed himself. Doesn’t work that way.
I remember studying this image and the affects of it in CATS (critical and theoretical studies) in university & it stuck with a few of my classmates; the interference in nature rules' when you're documenting something so poignant and real can really fuck with a creative. There's always going to be the argument against us (creatives) of 'then don't just document it, do something' and the very real problem of not being able to DO /anything/ BUT document it to bring to light the messed up parts of our very real existence, because maybe someone who CAN do something can do something.
It genuinely made me feel very uncomfortable with what I do.

We are not stone gods removed from feeling the distress and sobering responsibilities creatives feel as being in this awkward position of life and real ppl intersecting with the sort of hyperreal disassociation of providing information/story piece/filmographers to ppl who more often than not. Will never be as close to each of the potentially dark and horrible things this world bears for us to suffer. Document. See. And hopefully. Stop or solve.
@@PeakedInterest That's understandable, but I haven't seen another RUclipsr cover topics like these with more empathy. You're very careful not to sensationalize real life horrors, and you provide more than enough context so that viewers can understand why these things are important. There are other content creators who cover topics like this as if they're making a horror movie that happens to be based on real life events. You don't do that. You don't present things as if you're saying, "Look at this awful shit! Aren't you glad it didn't happen to you or anyone you actually care about? Sucks to be them!" I had an editor at a paper I worked for who had that attitude and wanted me to cover mainly crime, arrests, car wrecks, and house fires, and I felt horrible going into the county jail to write down the names of everyone who had been arrested and what they'd been arrested for, knowing I was making one of the worst times in someone's life worse by publishing their name next to what they were charged with, no matter how trivial it was. I hated going up to people who'd just been in an awful car crash and asking them questions. I was held up on the road going back to the office by a car accident, and the first thing she asked me when I got back and explained why I was late was "Did you get pictures?" I replied "Yes," and immediately I felt disgusted with myself and what I was doing. So, I understand how this can get to you, but YOU are not one of those people like my editor.

I visited South Africa this summer (or winter in the Southern Hemisphere), and it was beautiful. From the picturesque countrysides, the bustling cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, the wild nature of its national park, and (most importantly) the resilience and hospitality of the people in every corner of the motherland. It's such a shame that the native populations were subjugated to such terrible crimes.
I think the same can be said for many parts of Africa. Beautiful place with so many historical scars

The boy in that picture survived for a longer period of time than Carter did, who committed suicide. He died around 2007 as per his fathers testimonial

Fantastic video, Lee. You recount history very clearly and engaging. I do wonder if the photo at 5.52 is Ken Oosterbroek, please ignore if I am incorrect. I read his biography years ago and it’s so heart breaking how strong these men (photographers) stuck together against what they witnessed. Do those who document history have a moral responsibility to try and change it. Where would we be today without photo journalists? I can ultimately look at this photo and carry on with my day, despite how harrowing it is, where Carter couldn’t and I think it’s easy to blame the documenter and not realise all of our roles in bearing witness. I am always glad for your documentation, your respect and teaching. Have you read In Extremis about Marie Colvin? She certainly struggled in only witnessing and then was killed around it.
It was unclear, I suspected it was ken also since it seemed to resemble him more but the website where I found it was one registered to the bang bang club and they labelled it as Kevin so I went with that even though I thought it was Ken as well.
He committed suicide because of his cruelty towards the child and her failure to help her. I think his life was dark. Of his cruelty and eagerness to catch up with the event for the sake of fame and prize. In the end, the eagle did not eat the child. And Kevin Carter ate himself and destroyed it. He who does not consider people's feelings will not consider his feelings

That photograph is not just heartbreaking and existentially depressing, but it's a reminder of how it personally affected me because it reminded me of how a family member of mine suffered and died, and it reminded me that there are innocent people in this world who did no wrong, did no harm or ill will to anyone, and they ended up suffering and dying for nothing, while at the same time so many wicked people especially those who wear fancy suites are guilty of the most abhorrent of atrocities and they get to walk around free snickering and giggling at the evil acts they committed. It's reminders like that photograph that makes me say. Where is God in all of this? The more I think about it, my sadness turns into anger. I get angry and have so much hatred for God, because it is a testimony to me that God created a giant mess of suffering of what we call a universe on purpose for its own sick games, and it really makes me wish. If I could physically harm God for all the suffering in this universe I would. So many innocent people don't deserve to die from guns, bombs, starvation, all sorts of diseases, and from Human Predators in the halls of Government, Religion, Business, and all other kinds. And God stands silent in all of this is something I can never forgive God for. When I die, I will spit in its many eyes and call out God for what it truly is. A deadbeat parent who never cared about its own creation. I wouldn't care what happens to me, because God has a lot to answer for, and it deserves all the hate and anger that I have for the Creator.

@@PeakedInterest the best thing you can do for someone is bring awareness to their situation. That’s what he did and that’s what you are doing.
but if he didn't take that photo then majority of people in Western countries would've never known how bad it actually was in Sudan.... His photo is what led to a large movement or charitable/aid organizations to help the starving people in Sudan which you can argue spreading awareness at that level is worth a prize

I saw this photo years ago in a collection of photographs in a magazine, but the story as far as I can remember, wasn't included. As someone who has struggled with suicidal thoughts my entire life, for what really amounts to less than what this man went through, hearing his final words really. Struck a chord with me. So much suffering in this world, and for what?

Why blame carter for creating awareness? Gov'ts are at times cruel to humanity and that picture depicts it all.
What a good video; but MAN this one always hits hard.
This video is even more meaningful in light of the movie Civil War, which I watched a couple weeks ago. It definitely sounds like Carter, or photoreporters like him in general, was of inspiration to the movie. One of the photos that Kirsten Dunst's character is shown to have taken in the past is a necklacing photo.
Garland is known to respect journalism so it's probably likely. I want to watch that movie too, garland is such an excellent writer

One was hungry for food and another has the hunger of fame.

The real problems in south africa really started with the brits. Dutch settlers basicly colonized a empty land and had proper relations with the san neighbours. The boer wars drove them north and created conflict with the rapidly expanding and also very brutal zulu's. Most of the modern southafrican population were not enslaved and moved in much later. Apartheid was very convienient not just for white rule but to keep warring tribes seperate. It is not as black and white as portrayed here.
Plus Africans enslaved Africans before.

Growing up in a remote village in northern Ghana, I was often told this very statement in exactly the same words in my native Dagaare language.
To be honest, being horrified at the photographers apathy or questioning why he never helped is really questioning ourselves. Shit happens and we criticise from far in our self righteousness, when truly we are all a bit like the vulture looking on in a dog eats dog world. Sickening thought. may we all strive to be above that!

I don’t know if their is a more powerful photo ever taken than this.
I heard that this little girl did indeed survive but died 14 years later secondary to malaria.

I recall reading the book The Bang Bang Club, incredible brutal read, the movie was also very confronting. I work as a news photographer I've covered some pretty awful situations over the years that absolutely leave a mark, but nothing on the scale of what Kevin witnessed and documented.
Yeah that's the book about him. It was also the name of his photographer group. Being a war photographer isn't for the faint hearted

Admittedly I skipped through a good portion of this to get to the ending, but, geez, how sad for that poor young man. Guess it would/very well could take that sort of toll on someone.
This case annoys the living shit out of me, but I think this is the most credible theory I've heard. It's also really rather obvious as an option once stated, and yet I've never seen anyone else mention it, nor did I ever think of it either. To my mind, you've provided a very viable possibility for a long-standing mystery in fewer than thirteen minutes. Impressive.

He didn't even tried to ask about that girl is alive or not ? If he just took a step to find the answer, he would have not done suicide because that girl was safe and alive .

Heaven help me. He tried to commit suicide by drinking amongst other things rat poison, when he was a DJ - long before he became a photographer. Everything is not the fault of Jan van Riebeeck .

People who were angered on him for not taking action- what did they expect him to do? Save the girl? Dude, you remember South Sudan was in chaos right? Was there really any hospital? Even if there was one, did you think the military would allow him to do so? Those people, did they think they could do something to that poor girl even if they were in that place like Carter?? I doubt so. Not only they were unable to help the poor little girl, they putted pressure on Carter- it was so saddening.
What I have read is, after taking that photo, he shooed away the vulture and just left , without helping that kid, and that guilt he carried lifelong.
How very sad.

Kevin Carter wss only 34yrs old ...im shocked by that. I thought he was a much older man.
I know about the culture .Even taking photos in Germany is taboo .A remarkable story of a sensitive man and so much chaos built from colonial greed .The starvation was and remains to this day a disgrace and yet no world power dealt with it .Much easier to trade in weapons and lucrative .Ironical that US blocked aid after 9:11..That aid would / could have made such a difference .Not one of us can choose where we are born. Unlike online shopping we have no say in it and there is no returns policy The rather well off Western Powers would do well to remember this .A very moving record. Kevin Carter was a good man who knew he could work to change things and as much as he was one person he did ..No politicians could match his humanity ...Thank you..
