The fact that Detroit took the cup a year prior, just adds to that game saving despiration dive by Fleury, solidifying the cup win.. I have no doubt Fleury had a dream just like that as a child. Pretty awesome feeling I'm sure.
and the fact that Hossa left the pens to play for detroit to have a better chance at a cup; only to lose to the pens the next season while playing for detroit.
boomkilla12345 I was sorta into hockey before that but when my Pens started sucking and it started becoming harder and harder to watch it on TV I fail out of love of the game... the first series changed all that... the second cemented me as a hockey fan
It was like going to war. I remember seeing a video about the red wings/penguins final that showed the two teams just going back and forth. Tons of hits and saves
That crossbar shot by Kronwall made my heart skip several beats. This game was the most anxiety-inducing experience I've ever had as a sports fan. What a series. Note: It's kind of a shame these two teams never had a rubber match final.
Absolutely INSANE! I mean what are the odds?! In 2008, the Wings beat the Pens in Pittsburgh on a last-minute miraculous save. In 2009? Pens pull a reverse card. THAT'S what makes hockey so great!
Even in 2017 my heart fucking stops when that puck rings off the crossbar. I literally know that they don't score a goal and fleury goes off at the end but the fact that it's that close always gets me. LETS GO PENSS
lol hossas luck amazes me 2008: loses final on penguins 2009: switches teams, loses to penguins 2010: finally picked my good boys (the hawks) and wins cup...3 times in 6 seasons
+Ryan Spero As a Pens fan I was a little jacked off how he left and turned down the Pens offer, "for a better chance at winning the cup", and it felt AMAZING to win and see him with his head down on the other bench. That being said, I ended up being happy for the guy winning 3 cups in Chicago. He really was a great player and a good person. 5 trips to the final in 7 years and 3 cups is damn impressive.
Been watching the Pens since I was 5 years old (2000) and to see them win, after 9 years of watching, left me speechless! After seeing flower dive to save the game, its left me with a dream, and a desire to do the same for my team.. He's the reason I play goalie with the number 29 on my back. I have nothing but respect for the Red Wings, this was truly an epic series
We have no depth anymore, there's Crosby, Geno, Letang, and then that about does it for outstanding talent in our skaters (not including Flower, because he's in a different category). We need more depth, like some GOOD wingers! We have decent two way forwards on the wings, but when our only choice is to put Daniel Winnik and Perron on the wings with Crosby... That's a recipe for train wreck. Long story short, depth is what's wrong with the Burgh, in my opinion
Crlongboarder not to mention all the injuries, dupuis and letang are such great players but have had such terrible luck staying healthy, hornqvist is still a really talented player, he's more consistent then say Perron, changes do need to be made, will help if we are getting rid of Downie will cut down our penalty minutes for one thing
Absolutely loved this cup final series for the 2 years they got to the finals together, gutted in 2008 but joyous in 2009. This Detroit team was full of stars and for this young pens side to beat them in the rematch was great to watch. It really was nail biting stuff.
+Ben Jacox Well the Habs don't hate the Hawks or Wings. We used to hate Toronto but they sucked so much it turned to pity. Rangers we hate occasionally, and everyone hates the Bruins anyway, though not nearly as much as they hate us.

I love coming back to watch this vid... as a die hard pens fan since the Lemieux days, I will never forget the feeling I felt in these last 2 minutes. Probably the most anxiety I have ever felt or will ever feel in my life.
FuckingHateTwilight it was rigged. if it wasn’t for the back to back scheduling the wings would had won again. you can thank bettman for the penguins first cup cause he wanted Crosby to get a ring ASAP to get the nhl ratings up.
FuckingHateTwilight it’s the truth. pens didn’t earn their first cup. it was handed to them by the commissioner by fixing the schedule in their favor. he knew the older wings would falter under a back to back playing schedule. that’s straight up fact.
FuckingHateTwilight it’s all good though. wings are going to be back and stronger then before real soon. pens are going to be rebuilding here within a few years. might take a couple more first round exits before their GM wakes up like it took for Ken Holland to wake up. would be nice to see another pens wings final again without any bs going on from the commissioner.
FuckingHateTwilight I explained to you how it was fixed. the wings were a much older team vs a much younger pens team. bettman knew the only way to give the pens the advantage was to ware the older wings down by making them play back to back nights against a much younger pens team. that’s how you turn a underdog into a favorite. the wings were straight up cheated by the league.
FuckingHateTwilight yeah it was your time. sure was. thanks to the league fixing the schedule in your teams favor. I know it’s hard for you to admit that but it’s the truth. I know you don’t want to admit the championship was given to your team cause they won. butt it’s the truth. just saying. what’s done is done. your team won the wings lost. butt let’s not turn a blind eye to the main reason why your team won.
@@killionaire6891 Nope, No Dynasty. The word 'dyanasty' comes from a 'Dyanstic Reign'; Meaning a king or queen at the top for a length of time, not intermittently. The NFL saw dynasties with the packers from 29 - 31, and again in the late 60's. The Steelers of the 70's were NOT a dynasty. There was a break in between their double back to backs. The 49's of the 80's were not either, nor the 90's Cowboys. NOR the Patriots, who were a top team for over 15 years, but never formed a proper dynasty. Watching these two cup runs as a kid in 08’ and 09’ with my dad (I was 6-7 years old) made me love hockey as a sport, but also love the penguins,. My dad is a Detroit fan so I always just went for Detroit, but seeing how the same two teams made it to the cup final and seeing the penguins win it in 09’ made me really like them, plus the facts since I was a kid I loved penguins 😂
I watched this in my room at the group home I was in. I felt like I was out of my body waiting for the end going they won. Just like with the super bowl
Watching this brings back so many great memories. I watched them win in 91' and 92', then started to think I might never see another cup. Then this happened. I was holding my 1 year old son and screaming while watching the TV, while trying not to scare him! Lol. He's 12 now and we got to see 2 more cups. Awesome.
This was probably one of the toughest games I ever watched as a Red Wings fan when Detroit had a chance to end it in game 6, I dont think Detroit was outplayed in this one just that the pens were a bit more hungry then my wings. Gotta give them their props.
+Bobby T. Was an incredible set of games and its even better when Wings fans can admit that instead of making up non existant penalties that went uncalled.
The shot of Hossa there right after the final horn was priceless, lost as a Penguin the year prior to Detroit. Jumped ship only to see the tables turned. I know he won cups with Chicago, but that moment seeing his frustration was priceless!!!
Seriously back to back finals opponents. Each won one. Such a damn good series. I am a die hard Pens fan but ever since this series Detroit is one of my other favorite teams and i always root for them to do good. Great coach, legendary history and players
One of the most memorable moments of my life when this happened. I was 8 years old and I was a huge penguins fan. I remember watching it at my neighbors house and we just went crazy when the final horn sounded. It was awesome, my only wish is either for the steelers or the pens to win another championship. Pens are looking good this year though. Long live the Burgh!
Just great series in back to back years! Congrates to both teams on an awesome series! Just what the sport needed. GO PENS! Congrates to the Hershey Bears for winning the Calder Cup! Great year for sports in PA!
I'm a Penguins fan, and that was a epic series. Over 5 years later, I love to watch re-runs of the games in the series. Both teams played their hearts out, Yzeman, and that's one of those series where it's ashame one team must lose. Based on what you posted, seems like you're a classy fan. Based on what I've seen from both PIT and DET fans in some cases, it's good that we, as fans of opposing teams in that Stanley Cup Final, can have a friendly conversation. :)
TheYzeman Detroit is a great "hockeytown", no doubt about it (coming from a Pens fan). I recently attended the Pens' games against Anaheim, LA, and San Jose last weekend and California fans are pathetic (especially Kings "fans"). Pittsburgh fans filled, at the very least, 40% of the arena in all three cities. I doubt you'd see more than 5-10% of the fans in Detroit or Pittsburgh rooting for the opposing team.
And Marian Hossa was in the wrong end of both of these Previous Two Stanley Cup Finals between Detroit and Pittsburgh. Something most Hockey Fans fail to recognize during 2008 and 2009.
I don't think I've watched the actual final minutes of this game since it happened. I'm never going to get over it. I've seen the save, I've heard the call by the commentators, but I've never watched it all happen again.
I'm not into hockey as much as I am into basketball but I LOVE, and I mean LOVE seeing game 7 championship road wins. I still remember watching this live too
I was actually at this game and it was the greatest hockey game I ever went to despite the red wings losing the game we actually got to see the Stanley cup come out in all its glory over a hard thought series.
game 6 in 2008 ended with a last second save, and to see hossa's shot just trickle across the face of goal in the last second was crushing so glad we got redemption the next year
those two finals with the Pens and Wings...great hockey. just one great moment after another. Glad they split the cups. They both deserved it. Pens fan. I had to watch this game while my newborn and wife were sleeping, trying not to explode. I finally had to go outside and get it out....
as years go by, and i got a little older, still young, 28 now. i remember 94,95,96,97,98 and so on so detailed. and then they won it in 08, and it was all red wings smack talk, which we are 100% entitled to. but this loss hurt so much, and not looking back, i don't care if they don't win for another 40 years. they are on a 23 year playoff streak.... and they're still gooooooood. lgrw!
David Dilaura As a Pens fan, I was appreciative of the comments made by Wings fans after the 07-08 finals. Most were respectful, saying that the young Pens were the team of the future while offering their condolences on such a hard fought defeat. Then, after this win, most Detroit fans became conspiracy theorists and trash talkers who were so disrespectful that I lost any ounce of sympathy for Detroit. Here we are six years later and, though I respect the Wings' historical greatness, I still cannot stand to hear Wings fans whine about this loss.
I really like that Doc Emrick spoke about Dick Irvin Sr. and the Unseen Hand. That's cool history. His son Dick Irvin Jr. was a broadcaster and colour commentator with Danny Gallivan. He wrote several books and mentions the Unseen Hand in his first book, Now Back to you Dick.
09 is still my favorite Cup victory!! It was just too perfect. 08 revenge, Hossa saying he was going to go to Detroit to win a Cup. Everything was just perfect!!
fun fact. the shot off the crossbar with a little over 2 mins to go i literally shit my pants. wet farted and just had to sit in it for the end of the game. i'll never forget this game
Funniest thing about Detroit and Pittsburgh being in the finals back to back years is that marian hossa played for penguins in '08 finals and lost, then next season he switches to Redwings in '09 makes it to the finals again and again he lost lol, what a series of unfortunate events!
@perrlywites ummm didn't we beat you guys in both games this year? when everyone on our team was injured and we had minor league callups? i mean detroit is good but that is some logic.
this ranks as 1 of the sweetest Burgh championship wins due 2 losing the cup 2 Detroit the previous yr then winning it IN Detroit the following yr. 412
Acer Zynxi - 2nd Channel Stop laughing. Hossa wasn't on that Ottawa team that lost to Anaheim in the Finals. He was playing for the Atlanta Thrashers. And Hossa is now 3-2 in the Finals.
Acer Zynxi - 2nd Channel Hossa played for the Thrashers for 2 1/2 years from 2006 until he was dealt to the Pens at the trade deadline in 08, do some research first
Detroit and pittsburgh played back to back cup finals against each other in 2008 n 2009 each winning 1 away from there home ice. Also pens touched the conference trophy in 2009, 2016 and this yr in 2017 and when they did that each time they won the cup except for 2008 when they didn't touch that conference trophy in 2008 and lost the cup finals to Detroit. The red wings were good from 96-97 to 2009 winning 4 Stanley cups in 97,98,02,and 08 but losing the cup finals in 09 and made the playoffs every yr since 90 or 91 but haven't made the playoffs this yr, red wings days of winning the cup are over they're in rebuilding phase now but pens could still be good for another 3 to 5 yrs. Also the nhl moved the red wings to the eastern conference instead of being in the western conference anymore, it never made sense why Detroit was in the western conference anyway when they're closer to the eastern conference.
The fact that Detroit took the cup a year prior, just adds to that game saving despiration dive by Fleury, solidifying the cup win.. I have no doubt Fleury had a dream just like that as a child. Pretty awesome feeling I'm sure.
It's like the equivalent of getting a Stanley Cup overtime goal, but for a goalie.
and the fact that Hossa left the pens to play for detroit to have a better chance at a cup; only to lose to the pens the next season while playing for detroit.
Jason Falcione That's why the people of Pittsburgh will always consider Hossa a JAGOFF 🐧🏒🐧
That's the definition of irony
hossa, he is quite the douche for leaving. he could have done so well with crosby.
Those two Finals between the Wings and Pens were the reasons why I got into hockey. Riveting stuff.

They would of won the cup if they scored those two
Ha ha we felt fine, 4 cups in my lifetime, I ain't greedy and frankly datsyuk played that whole series with a cracked ankle, we had our run, pens had their run, nothing lasts forever.
One of the most stressful penguin games I’ve had the pleasure of watching. The kronwall post hit, and fleury’s last save will always give me chills.
thats gotta be one of the best saves ever
I love coming back to watch this vid... as a die hard pens fan since the Lemieux days, I will never forget the feeling I felt in these last 2 minutes. Probably the most anxiety I have ever felt or will ever feel in my life.

First the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII and now the Penguins in the Stanley Cup 2009. Man 2009 was such a great year to be a Pittsburgh sports fan!

For us Wings fans, this game still stings. Really really tough losing game 7 at home - even after all of the success of the previous 15 years.
Back in 2021, barely able to re-watch this.

Would love to see a Red Wings-Pens Stanley Cup again this year.....What an epic story that would be....to settle all scores.
those two finals with the Pens and Wings...great hockey. just one great moment after another. Glad they split the cups. They both deserved it. Pens fan. I had to watch this game while my newborn and wife were sleeping, trying not to explode. I finally had to go outside and get it out....
man, i miss this :/
This is why I love hockey ... goose bumps still 3 years later !
is the audio fucked up for anyone else?
Ma Jo Ma Jr Yes it keeps going like p-p-penguins it's so bad
one of the most epic endings to a cup finals ever
That was the best night of my life. Until we win another one!
We will soon. It doesn't look like it now, but believe me, we will.
+Bobby T. Yeah well what about now.
+Dollar Bin Gaming Yea what about now? ;)
+Bobby T. What about now? 2 more games to go boys
1 game left and still plenty in the tank!
God, it feels good to watch this again
134 dislikes from Marion Hossa and his family.
These three minutes are the most fond of memories at The Joe.
as years go by, and i got a little older, still young, 28 now. i remember 94,95,96,97,98 and so on so detailed. and then they won it in 08, and it was all red wings smack talk, which we are 100% entitled to. but this loss hurt so much, and not looking back, i don't care if they don't win for another 40 years. they are on a 23 year playoff streak.... and they're still gooooooood. lgrw!
i guess what i'm saying is that i've seen it all, and so happy and content.
Aaaaw Geno looks so happy at the end.
Again this year! Let's go Pens!!!
+Josh Grimes LET'S GO PENS!!!! (SORRY CAPS LOCK BROKEN)
Yeah in about 15 we will have won the Stanley cup finals
+Conzy l 18 l so close boys lets do this!
And again this year!
My team gave me a cup win a few hours after I was born.
One of the best Stanley cup finals ever Crosby first cup
I really like that Doc Emrick spoke about Dick Irvin Sr. and the Unseen Hand. That's cool history. His son Dick Irvin Jr. was a broadcaster and colour commentator with Danny Gallivan. He wrote several books and mentions the Unseen Hand in his first book, Now Back to you Dick.
The Penguins have another shot this year. They won game 1 so far.
The Penguins always make the finals in pairs! Let's Win it again in 2017.
2 of the best endings to The Stanley Cup Finals ever....you win on my rink last year I win on yours this year
The game has changed so much low-key since this game
@joep125 how the hell was the Blackhawks celebration better? No one even knew Kane scored and no one did anything.
Yeah - this was a hell of a game
great year to be a Pittsburgh sports fan
09 is still my favorite Cup victory!! It was just too perfect. 08 revenge, Hossa saying he was going to go to Detroit to win a Cup. Everything was just perfect!!
Interesting trivia - Hossa is the only guy to play in 3 straight Stanley Cup finals with 3 different teams. He went to Chicago the following season
The peak of hockey play by play
fun fact. the shot off the crossbar with a little over 2 mins to go i literally shit my pants. wet farted and just had to sit in it for the end of the game. i'll never forget this game
I really hoped last year could have been the rubber match. Last chance the teams might have ever gotten to play in the finals together.
Wings or Pens fan YOU KNOW wanted to see a 3rd final series between these 2 man ....
great finals wow Penguins win ... Crosby becomes youngest Captain to hoist the Stanley Cup :) well done :)
1:39 my 15 year old heart fell out of my chest for about 5 seconds thinking they had scored because of the sound and reaction of the crowd
this ranks as 1 of the sweetest Burgh championship wins due 2 losing the cup 2 Detroit the previous yr then winning it IN Detroit the following yr.
412
Kind of crazy how much the league has changed since then
Don't be sad Hossa....youre gonna get yours next year!
Art Vandalay and 3 years after that
+alchoholicsforthewin And 2 years after that one
I bet he was rethinking his life choices on that bench
Thank you Finally someone understands
Whqt
Pretty exciting finish to this game. That shot off the crossbar must've made some people lose their minds.
WE DID IT AGAIN!!!! 2016 Stanley Cup champions!!!!
Hossa makes it to the finals 4 years in a row, with 4 different teams. Only 1 cup
Wasn't just 3 years...
I think it was just 3 years
nah, it was with 4 teams... Ottawa (againest Anaheim), Pittsburgh (againest Detriot), Detriot (againest Pittsburgh), and Chicago (againest philly) lol
I remember watching this game as a kid as a pens fan and shitting myself watching it it's like every shot the red wings took was a good shot
2021 LETS GO PENS!!
My heart still drops when that puck hit the crossbar lol
This was the game of the year
I still can’t believe we lost this series.
I knew the penguins were going to win the series after that second period in game 4.
That was magic.
I'll miss Fluery :(
You rock Pittsburgh . We all love you .
Last ever SCF game at the Joe Louis Arena.
pretty damn good game to see for your first game ever.
