Great video I’m a complete noob when I watched this I realised my red dot was miles off and great idea about telegraph pole,I had to do mine at a street lamp in the dark which was fun 🙃 the neighbours thought I was some pervert looking at the windows 😂
That's a very clear explanation. I prefer to use both types of finder - the red dot unit for initial orientation and then the optical finder to reveal the stars close to the target.
New user here and I'm so glad to know the viewfinder is supposed to be inverted. Been trying to figure out how to flip it for hours. Thanks for saving me more frustration 🙃
Type 2, red dot. I had to shim mine on the left side; the adjustment knob was maxed out, and the red dot was still too far left. After cutting up a business card, it was right on the money. New, right out of the box, Celestron Nexstar 130SLT.
My Number One tip would be to extend the legs of the Tripod to full length, and it should not be much of an issue to align the finderscope with your 2 lenses in the Celestron 114 LCM atleast.
What do i do if my Red dots adjustments are maxxed out in both alt and azi. Cant get it to centre on the telescopes visual. I'm off at a diagonal to the target.
Thanks I am going to use this today, as I look like a big idiot in front of my family, when it took me an hour to find the moon, on a full moon night:-)
My experience with the red dot finder was troublesome. I did the daytime alignment, but experienced both glare and loss of the dot. The sun was behind me and low in the sky. I was able to proceed only by moving the telescope into deep shade. The red dot then formed on the reticle. It would be easy to break a red dot finder when trying to see the dot in daylight and over adjusting the screws.
I thank you, but I wish you were a bit clearer on which knob does what. As a complete novice, I’m struggling with this. Which knob should I turn to move the dot up? Also, the dot seems to move around depending on what angle my head is at when I look through the finder. So, how do I know where my head should be when looking through the finder?
I found it really hard to get the red dot in the window to start with. It was -6c at the So it was hard to manipulate the adjustment wheels. Last night when I used it ,I was getting reflective dots in the laser finder scope. What’s I doing wrong?
Mine started with a considerable offset also, and nears the adjustment limits to get it centered. The flimsy, flexible plastic of the mount compounds the problem, since it flexes as you turn the knobs.
Great video, I have a question, In my area, I could not find an unobstructed object far enough, is it Ok to align the finder scope that way? Thanks very much.
I bought a C11 deluxe recently and the finder-scope base is not on the telescope, should i unscrew the screws on top of the scope and fix the base? I don't want to touch any screws without your advise
Hi Mark, we just took our finderscope outside to double check our red dot, and it works beautifully in the daytime. Could it be that the battery is low on your unit?
I had to remove the battery and bend the connection point so it would make constant contact with the battery. It worked. However, last night I tried to SkyAlign many times. Despite following the instructions and choosing three very bright stars, I kept getting an "Alignment Failed- Objects do not appear in the database". What are the 2 or 3 most likely causes for this? Keep in mind I am in northern Thailand.
1. Make sure date, time and location is entered in correctly, including Standard Time in case your handcontrol is set to Daylight Savings Time. 2. You can choose to enter in your location’s longitude and latitude coordinates in case your city is not listed in the handcontrol’s city database. 3. Tripod should be level. 4. You can also try other alignment methods if Sky-Align continues to fail. My preferred alignment method is Auto-Two Star 5. Also, very important. When you center alignment stars, you must make sure you are absolutely centering the bright alignment stars and not nearby random stars. 6. Since we are in winter, you can try using Regulus, Sirius, and Capella; Sirius, Rigel and Polaris; or Pollux, Rigel and Aldebaran as alignment stars using Sky-Align. If all else fails, Tech Support can help walk you through: mail@celestronsupport.com
Mark Di Paolo Mark, At first it does appear that the red dot is not present. As long as the finder scope is on, and has working batteries it will be there. Try rotating your head in the view finder, you should suddenly see the red dot pop into focus. When you switch the red dot finder on, look down towards the actual finder scope, you should see a tiny tiny red light, if you see this its working. You need to turn the finder scope ‘on’ button fully forward, as it magnifies the red dot by turning/rotating the finders scope button. You just need to rotate your head in the finder till it comes into view. :))
This video did help, however, 2 questions. First, what if we can’t align the object with the Red dot? 🔴 like I have tried with 3 objects all stationary and all a considerable distance and no matter what I try I can’t align my finder scope so I have no idea what is going on. Furthermore if my telescope came with a laser finder then am I still able to use my crosshair finder instead so long as I mount it correctly on the telescope? 🔭 I also did notice that as I was using the laser finder that the finder itself was moving when I turned the knobs. I don’t know if that is normal or not but it certainly has aroused suspicions.
The finderscope supplied with my C60 has three screws; not 2 screws & a tension pivot screw. Could you please post a video showing how to center the finderscope on a target with 3 screws? I'm unable to do that for some reason.
Thanks Kevin really helped me understand my new RACI 9x50 finderscope...... BUT.......would it be asking to much to just add a user manual in the box or online please, please, please.🙏.

Thank you kevin, with a full moon and a 6 inch reflector telescope I have struggled to no end just trying to find something as big as the moon. The finding scope was not set up and everything in the scope was in reverse. so being new to all this my corrections were opposite. even knowing its opposite it seems muscle memory doesn't want to co-operate that well. your eye see's go left so arm takes it left.. but you should have gone right in opposite..the finding scope takes all that reverse frustration away... provided the finding scopes lock down screws haven't been loosened and the finding scope is pointed somewhere entirely different. kinda stuff you find with garage sale telescopes.
I need help with the red dot. I see the object through my telescope, then i look through the red dot and the red dot is really high up. Ive tryed to line it up but the red dot scope doesn’t go down any further . Please help!!!
Not entirely correct. If you want to get a more accurate alignment of your finder scope, it is better to use a higher magnification eyepiece. Anything from a 20 and above will not align the finder scope accurately and it will be off drastically if you swap out an eyepiece to lets say a 6mm. I do not think telescope companies took into account that all eyepieces vary in degrees and field of view. If one wants a true and accurate alignment. I would highly recommend using a 14mm or higher magnification to align the finder scope; this way your object will remain in the field of view. If you go with a 20mm or lower and align your finder scope and then if you swap out to a higher one like a 6mm, the object will be in the finder scope, but it will not be in the actual field of view and you will be moving your scope all over the place trying to find it. Now unless of course you have a Goto Mount then this won't matter either way. So if you are using a Dobsonian like I do then I would recommend using a higher magnification eyepiece like a 14mm to align your finder scope. This way your guaranteed to have the object in both the finder scope and actual field of view when swapping to higher or lower magnification eyepieces. :) Happy Exploring!
You are correct for the most part except in the video he was using an SCT which has a very long focal length. Sticking a 14mm eyepiece in an SCT is over the top. It was just poor wording/tutorial on Celestron's part. They should have planned this video out and gone into it further about the different telescope focal lengths and eyepiece focal lengths to use when aligning the finders. A 23mm is about right for an SCT and a 14mm is not enough for a 400mm focal length telescope. There is no one size fits all.
So you can move the telescope to an object easier. The alternative would be trying to look through the lens while moving the telescope and checking the sky all at once. If you instead use the finder, you can get the telescope pretty close, then make finer adjustments looking through the lens

I am experiencing the same issue with the red dot finder scope. And have been continuously trying to put the finder scope in the right position, yet unable to. Since your comment is a year old I am curious if you ever aligned the telescope and finderscope. If so, please give me advice as to how I should put the red dot in the right position. The red dot is very random indeed.
Could someone help me? I have been trying for months, there is no red dot at all :(!! I even put a new battery because I thought I might have left it on and didn't notice but there is no change at all.
I think my red dot finderscope’s battery is finished because it doesn’t show the red dot, so tell me if there is a ways to charge it or change battery or how to fix it.I hope you find my comment and help me to fix this problem❤😊
We got a celestron 130 and it came with a Red dot site. Tonight I found the moon (after much searching) however the red dot site is really off target so much I couldn’t even see the moon in the site at all!! It looked like it was aiming way above what was coming into the telescope lense. How do I sort that out ?
ALIGNING YOUR STARPOINTER PRO The StarPointer Pro helps you aim your telescope by looking through its round glass window and centering your target in the circular reticle. Before you can use use the finder, you’ll need to align it with the telescope’s main optics. Although this step can be done at night, it is significantly easier during the day. Once you have completed the finderscope alignment, you should not have to repeat this step unless the finderscope is bumped or dropped. TO ALIGN THE STARPOINTER PRO: 1. Take the telescope outside during the day. Using your naked eye, find an easily recognizable object, such as a streetlight, car license plate, or tall tree. The object should be as far away as possible, but at least a quarter mile away. 2. Make sure your lowest magnification eyepiece is installed in the telescope 3. Move the telescope so that it is roughly pointing toward the object you chose in step 1. 4. Look through the telescope’s eyepiece and move the telescope until the object you chose lies in the center of the view. 5. Turn on the StarPointer Pro by turning the power/brightness switch knob on the bottom of the unit as far as it will go. 6. With your head positioned about a foot behind the finder, look through the round window and locate the two red circles of the reticle. It will probably be close to, but not on top of, the object you see when you are looking through the telescope eyepiece. 7. Without moving the telescope, use the two adjustment knobs on the side and underneath the finderscope. One controls the left-right motion of the reticle, while the other controls the up-down motion. Adjust both until the reticle appears over the same object you are observing in the telescope eyepiece. Note: Be sure to turn off the finderscope when not in use to conserve battery power. s3.amazonaws.com/celestron-site-support-files/support_files/51365_StarPointerPro_Finderscope_InstSheet_BW.PDF
Well it is not correct for all telescopes, in example celestron powerseeker 50az have findersocpe with only support screws(my english is bad, i know) and no adjusteble screws. Edit: nevermind the screw was just missing

There are other ways to allign the finder scope. The finder that comes with the 114 is crap by all comparison. Many people have added different finders with little effort, google is your friend
Great video but iI need help. Just got my Celestron Astromaster 70 but Turning on the starpoint finderscope switch there is no red dot. Can any body help? Thak you
did you take out the plastic strip in the battery compartment? it's to prevent the battery from losing charge before the customer gets to use it
@@sancheziumfluoride4227 yea did that. It's all so simple but no red dot.
@@markdipaolo71 u also have to push in the dial in before u turn it. it should click. keep turning to make it brighter. make sure it clicks on and off
@@sancheziumfluoride4227 Thank you so much for your help. I got it working! ✌
@@markdipaolo71 nice!
Why is it over time, the finders cant align no matter how many much you turn the knobs, im guessing it may be a screw problem.
Thanks a lot
My red dot sight won’t turn on. I changed the battery’s and everything
these are very cheap IMHO. I had to replace the battery as well, but the cover would not put enough pressure on the battery clip to engage. I had to bend the clip, which finally got it to work.
My red dot appears like dotted line?? I can't align it?
You might be looking into the wrong end.
@enley Lol I can't thank you enough! Wow! All this time I had the thing on backwards! I feel so incredibly stupid! It's like calling BCAA because the fob is broken and forgetting that you can just use the key to unlock the door!
oh I wish the red dot was moving like the one in video, not totally random :D
I am experiencing the same issue with the red dot finder scope. And have been continuously trying to put the finder scope in the right position, yet unable to. Since your comment is a year old I am curious if you ever aligned the telescope and finderscope. If so, please give me advice as to how I should put the red dot in the right position. The red dot is very random indeed.
Well i am also facing the same problem the red dot isn't moving smoothly and i am not able it with my astromaster
Too bad Celestron neglects to mention the on/off control for the red dot in the documention, and disguises it as an adjustment knob.
Could someone help me? I have been trying for months, there is no red dot at all :(!! I even put a new battery because I thought I might have left it on and didn't notice but there is no change at all.
Why did I think I was gonna need a degree in physics and machinery to fix it
hey just like the military the azimuth wow ,THANKS thinking about my toy😢
I think my red dot finderscope’s battery is finished because it doesn’t show the red dot, so tell me if there is a ways to charge it or change battery or how to fix it.I hope you find my comment and help me to fix this problem❤😊
We got a celestron 130 and it came with a Red dot site. Tonight I found the moon (after much searching) however the red dot site is really off target so much I couldn’t even see the moon in the site at all!! It looked like it was aiming way above what was coming into the telescope lense. How do I sort that out ?
ALIGNING YOUR STARPOINTER PRO
The StarPointer Pro helps you aim your telescope by looking through its round glass window
and centering your target in the circular reticle. Before you can use use the finder, you’ll
need to align it with the telescope’s main optics. Although this step can be done at night, it is
significantly easier during the day. Once you have completed the finderscope alignment, you
should not have to repeat this step unless the finderscope is bumped or dropped.
TO ALIGN THE STARPOINTER PRO:
1. Take the telescope outside during the day. Using your naked eye, find an easily recognizable object, such as a streetlight, car license plate, or tall tree. The object should be as far away as possible, but at least a quarter mile away.
2. Make sure your lowest magnification eyepiece is installed in the telescope

@@CelestronDotCom this is the only explanation i found where is said where to position your head in relation with the finder. that helps a lot. cheers
Thank god i am not in Britain. In Greece we have 70% of the year, clear skies.
In above comment it is for Star Sense Explorer LT 80Z
I broke mine before watching this video haha
Well it is not correct for all telescopes, in example celestron powerseeker 50az have findersocpe with only support screws(my english is bad, i know) and no adjusteble screws.
Edit: nevermind the screw was just missing
