  • We finally decide to take on the infamous 'Portland Bill' and attempt to get our sailing boat officially into Englands 'West Country'.
We've had all kinds of set backs and boat malfunctions but we think we've got it all under control and now all that remains is to find a suitable weather window, before making a dash for it.
Here are some links you may find helpful if you're interested in our adventure:

Yes the head sail was a pain, and if push absolutely came to shove then perhaps I could have sorted it then and there, but when I couldn't seem to easily fix the issue, and Carly was already down with sea sickness, I didn't fancy risking getting sick too, and didn't know what would happen if I screwed something up with the head sail and couldn't then get it furled back in.

Cracking vid. Wonderful opening sequence...just needed a few more Viking ships, one or two dragons and and an ice wall. On the lobster pot front. Sailing in Maine with a good friend but lousy seafarer, we picked up a lobster pot rope round the propeller. Stopped us dead. Impossible to raise the pot as they sometimes put two or three on one line. No choice, I had to jump in with a knife and with the boat bobbing dangerously above me, cut through the rope as my kids looked on in fear and trepidation. Sharp words were had as I do not normally sail. Situation didn’t improve when we realised that the lobster rope had damaged all his underwater electronics giving us any idea of depth. We navigated back to safety using charts and...in my case...some choice vocabulary😉⛵️🙄

This reminds me of a trip to the West Country some years back. We went into Portland Marina, much like you, prior to ‘going west’, but instead of any dolphins, were met with the marina being filled with giant jellyfish the size of dustbin lids. There was a lot of them that year. We too planned a similar ‘conservative’ route around The Bill just as you did, but the evening before in the marina restaurant, the locals convinced us to try ‘the inner route’. I forget the precise timings … something odd like arriving at The Bill 20 mins before HW … but then going around “being close enough to throw a tea bag to the shore”. I think we arrived 5/10 mins early and so had some standing waves just before The Bill, but then rocketed around keeping within ‘teabag throwing distance’, shooting out the west side minutes later. Saved us several hours … just as we’d been told. I remember doing the offshore route on the way back being without that local knowledge on that passage

Poor Hank has to control himself until you managed to take him on to the fore deck so that he can relieved himself. I'm glad Hank finally realized he can use the deck for his business. I think you will find him a lot calmer now that he knows he can do this. I would think it's not a big deal to clean up after him. After all, all the loos empty into the sea. He's so beautiful to look at. He looks extremely well taken care of. And how lucky for him that he can be with his family.

Great video as always. Your storyboards are always very well done and your videos very entertaining.
Just a minor thought to pass on about your safety netting inspired by a shot I noticed in your video. Your safety nets will be much stronger if they are wrapped to your lifelines. It’s really easy to do. Buy a length of stout 1/8” line and start by tying one end to the pulpit at the level of the top lifeline. Now thread the line through the top opening of the netting 1 or 2 “net spaces” from the pulpit, then wrap it up over the lifeline, then back through a top net opening 3-4 spaces further along, back up over the lifeline etcetera, lacing the loose netting to the lifeline. You can carry on all the way to the pushpit or you can decide to stop at the final stanchion before the lowerable section for entry to the cockpit. Anchor the end of the 1/8” line at either the first stanchion or in the hook that attaches the lifeline to your pushpit depending on your choice of where to end the lashing. Next you can take a 1/4” or larger line and tie it very tightly from the bottom of the pulpit to the bottom of the pushpit wrapping it once around each stanchion along the way. Use a truckers hitch or similar method to make it very, very tight. You can now lace the bottom of the net around that line the same way you laced the top one around the lifeline. This one is actually the most important one to have fully laced to a very taut line because you (or Hank) are much more likely to go under the netting than over it. Personally, I extend both the top and bottom wrapping all the way from the first stanchion to the pushpit (without actually wrapping the top line around the pushpit). It means you can only drop the “openable” section to the deck instead of folding it forward totally out of the way but it’s never been a problem for me. It creates a very secure cockpit and stepping over the dropped netting/lifeline isn’t at all difficult. It’s a very quick and cheap task that adds immensely to the safety and effectiveness of your netting. A few bob and a couple of hours max and you’ve at least trebled the safety nets’ effectiveness.
By the way, I noticed the e-bikes in the video too. Just wondering, did you ever make the “bike bags” I suggested to help with the difficulty of moving, carrying, stowing the bikes? Cheers to you three! Happy Sailing!

Hi guys, thanks for another great video ! I'm curious about the way you deal with Hank's food and water: Do you keep it in free access (maybe not a great idea when the sea gets bigger) or do you have fixed time feeding ? Also do you keep the food away a certain time before you leave the marina to limit seasickness ? I'm quite curious about all that since I'll take my dog on board for the first time in a couple of weeks (just for a few hours as a beginning), so I'll take any tips you'll be willing to give !

Portland Bill is simple to sail around if you you plan it correctly. You can stay a LOT closer inshore than you did. The inshore passage is very safe and actually really close to the cliffs; within 200m.
Go around close to HW Dover as possible, otherwise too far offshore and at the wrong tide you'll end up in the tidal race.
You were pretty lucky with the winds.
ps: I use a piece of artificial turf for my dog to wee and poo on. Put it down on the cockpit floor at intervals, and encourage her to go. They get used to it pretty quickly. Clean it off after, and stow it in the fender locker. It will keep the dog's urea smell for a long while and Han will recognise it as his 'head'.
