    As someone who lives in Phoenix, the home of Diana Tarausi and Brittney Griner, I can easily say that the last game I went to was about 5 years ago. It was at ASU , which could probably hold about 15,000 plus people and there were probably a thousand people there. It made me so embarrassed just to be there.
    I never heard of Paige Buecker's until I watched and returned to the WNBA because of Caitlin Clark. America is so big and so diverse. Nobody was paying attention to women's basketball who wasn't in some way involved with basketball either through their kids or their own personal background. We all just kind of gave up on it.
    We need to stop giving the mic to Sue Bird. I don't need to hear her biased revisionist history of the game from her perspective that is not reality.

    Paige in HS was big for the small niche audience following basketball closely. Another Candace Parker or Sue Bird. But Caitlin brought millions of fans to the game and is only comparable to people like Tiger Woods. 99% of the credit for the growth in women’s basketball goes to Clark. Bird is a UConn homer. It’s part of the new effort to take down Clark and elevate anyone else they can. Angel Reese, JuJu, Paige et al. But it won’t work as the average fan never heard of them and is not blown away by their game the way they are by Caitlin. Why can’t people just be honest and give Caitlin her credit? It shouldn’t be this hard and devious.

But then Caitlin came in and completely blew the roof off the game her last 2 years in college and brought it mainstream.

So yeah, it's 90+% CC that grew the league.

    • @lakelanddentalarts
      @lakelanddentalarts 2 дня назад

      @@matthewlee4697 I never heard a single person claim that Caitlin did anything to grow the public's interest in the WNBA before she arrived at the WNBA. The talk about her helping the WNBA grow began AFTER she arrived in the WNBA and millions of people started going to games and watching games on TV to watch her play.
      Track the chronology of public-interest. When she played in college and people started talking about how talented she was, new people started watching women's college basket to see what the talk was about. She caused a giant spike in the public's interest in women's college-basketball, and that caused people to speculate about how much of an interest-impact she'd be if she played in the WNBA.
      When Caitlin started playing in the WNBA she brought her fans with her. She also brought a constantly-growing stream of new fans who'd become curious about what all the talk was about. The more people watched and talked about how incredible she was, the more new, curious people started showing up to games and watching on TV.
      Whereas interest in other teams grew slowly, people were falling over themselves to watch the Fever play because they wanted to see Caitlin's skills on the court. Ratings for Fever games soared when the games were televised. When the Fever played away games, there were times that other teams had to move their games to larger stadiums because Caitlin was coming to town and tickets for the smaller stadiums were selling out and people still demanding to see Caitlin play.
      When Caitlin started shattering rookie-records and creating new rookie-records, and NBA players started talking about how incredible she was, the floodgates of new curious people opened and the "Caitlin Clark Effect" about viewership and attendance escalated. The moment that the Fever were out of the playoffs and Caitlin wouldn't be playing anymore, viewership of the playoff games plummeted hard and fast.
      The same "Caitlin Clark Effect" happened when Caitlin decided to play women's golf during the off-season until the WNBA started their season again. Attendance at LPGA events and TV-viewership skyrocketed. Whenever Caitlin plays in a sport, the public's interest in that sport increases. Whereas players in the WNBA hated on Caitlin, the women of the LPGA have been excited and happy to have Caitlin playing with them.
      Caitlin played softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and golf as a child, played soccer and basketball in high school, and focused on playing basketball in college. Shes probably the most well-rounded female athlete in the world. No matter what sport she chooses to play, you can bet the bank that people will want to see her doing it. She's such an incredible athlete and so fun to watch that she could enter a ping-pong tournament and people would flock to see how she does in the competition.

However, Clark's playing style not only boosts her own performance but also elevates her teammates, attracting some fans. For others, it's her interaction with fans and the public, along with her intelligence and communication skills, that appeal. The essence is that being a basketball star isn't just about skill in the game; it's about embodying qualities that make a once-in-a-lifetime star. I started paying attention to Paige her freshman year, of course she got hurt her sophomore year and I started watching CC. Part of what I see in this debate about who’s better is, CC was not surrounded by some of the best high school recruits, therefore she was allowed much more freedom in her style of playing. Paige on the other hand had much more talent around her and was not given the same freedom. Sue once said they were not allowed to shoot 3’s like CC did. Because of the freedom CC was given and the talent she has, in my opinion, her game is much more exciting. Paige is a great player in her own right, but they both play a very different style of basketball. Would it be possible to ignore the media’s attempt to tell us that every great player coming up is as good or better than CC. Let them come to the league, we will make that decision for ourselves. What extra pressure has been added to the players, I’m supposed to be the next CC, sure no pressure.

    A mistake that people make is thinking that talent is what equates to greatness or popularity as a player. But it is not always true, or at least the deciding factor. I do not think there has ever been a power forward with more talent than Tim Duncan. But Larry Bird was more fun to watch. I think the reason that Wilt Chamberlain gets the nod by so many people over Bill Russell is that he had way more flash to his game. Caitlin Clark is not the best player in the WNBA, that is A'ja, but I would much rather watch Caitlin Clark. I think that Paige Bueckers will have Angel Reese level of popularity in the WNBA, which is a lot, but not Caitlin Clark level. I have not see her in the pros yet, so maybe things will change, but I would rather watch Arike play than Paige because (for me) Arike is more fun to watch. And who is the most fun to watch in the WNBA? Caitlin Clark. And I would rather watch Paige than A'ja because she is more fun to watch (I only saw a few games, so that may change). The NBA has always been like that. We want to see Dr. J and Elgin Baylor and other players that have sizzle in their games. Now, I use Tim Duncan as an example of a game with less sizzle. But he was still fun to watch. Just not as much fun as Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan or other players who make you oooh and aaah when you watch. Same goes for A'ja. I like to watch her play. I just prefer other players who are more fun to watch. Sure, it's sports and winning is very important. But it is also entertainment and fun is even more important because we want to be entertained.
