  • On January 7, 1999 at MacWorld in San Francisco Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller introduced the new and redesigned Power Macintosh G3. Apart from that - Steve Jobs talked about FireWire: Apple intended FireWire to be a serial replacement for the parallel SCSI bus while providing connectivity for digital audio and video equipment. Jobs was sure, that FireWire would become the one and only standard.

Some of these specs amaze me for the time. 100 GB of storage, in 1999? Hell, that would be usable even today. 1 GB of RAM? It wouldn't be usable today for Windows or macOS, but might be able to run Linux even in 2021. Gigabit ethernet? Used today! And USB--obviously Apple bet correctly on the uptake of that standard and the demise of parallel ports. USB is still being used today. Pretty neat to see how advanced this machine was for the time.

I recommend you watch IMNC's "World's Fastest G3" series, he puts a rare 1GHz G3 in it (even though it can take a G4) and maxes out the RAM and graphics card and OS, and even puts SSDs in it :)

I remember when my uncle got 1 GB hard disk space on his computer
I'm like "how the hell are you going to use up 1 GB of space?"
    Fun times.

Really glad to see colorful iMacs make a comeback in 2021, and Steve's philosophy on color and the consumer is still accurate today, so I'm shocked it took them this long to return to their roots. Hopefully the next batch of Macbooks come in color too.
1:38:04 -This however didn't age too well, lol.

Starting at 37:30 is when Steve Jobs first showed us the future. The foundation for technology in the 21st century. And it wasn't even obvious at the time. Watching it now, I get chills.

Damn, that presence, that confidence! I don't worship the guy like Apple people, but Jobs knew how to sell!
I really wish I had been into computers at this time (but I was into gaming on the PS1), there was so much exciting technology happening in computers. It's really just more of the same these days, now that computers, phones and tablets have sort of plateaued in terms of innovation as software and operating systems have become more bloated. But then again, despite the bloat, you could argue that software is catching up to the processing power available. Yes, the processors, graphics and RAM have gotten faster, battery life has increased, but nothing has been a real game changer in the past few years. I honestly could go back to the early 2000s and be perfectly happy with a basic cellphone, 1 Mb broadband, a fast single core computer with 512 MB of RAM and a 128 MB Radeon 9800 videocard!
Also a fun fact: the main processing cores in the Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U are all derivatives of the same PowerPC 750 design used for the G3. The differences really just like with clock speed, instruction support, and amount of L2 cache. The Wii U's Expresso CPU is the most unique with 3 cores, running up to 1.25 GHz, one core has 2 MB L2 cache, the other two have 512 KB. Neato.

My dad had one that he left me with his things when he passed away. I never hooked it up to the Internet. I do you still use yours? I love the machine and the older tech, which I was just new to then. I never saw one other than the one he had, there was no where to buy one here, all the stores only had PC's. I'm so glad that I found Apple on my own when I got older.

I notice over the years Apple puts on a good show, well, they put on a show. And every show starts out with a expiation of what happened with the last product line that led to people saying Apple sucks and that its going out of business because one of their products ended up not really working or having problems.
They hang on by a thread year after year, and because they keep this show going, and they keep apologizing for the overpriced garbage they keep putting ot. Year after year they put out crap on the market, there hardware is always plagued with problems, people constantly get ripped off, and yet because they keep saying sorry for screwing you over people keep falling for it.
enjoy your IOS 8 or 8. whatever, and dont bend your phone when they have another song and dance show they will tell you they are sorry and yet again market annalist said we were done for but we survived.
