  • This tutorial is aimed at Metal Detectorists in the UK and around the world.
    The aim is to provide a clearer picture of permissions and land than can be provided by online LIDAR sources.

      You're welcome Paul, but do have a look at my other tutorials of QGIS. Caris is great if you just want to look at some lidar, and the way it renders is beautful. It's actually quite hard to recreate. But, QGIS is infinitely expandable. I can layer over aerial photography, add markers, draw lines, layer over old OS maps etc... which Caris won't let you do. Just thought I should mention that 🙂

      @@unearthers Thanks for replying! I've used QGIS a bit in the past, plus other GIS products. What I liked about Caris is that you can change the lighting and easily look at it from different angles. There was a tunnel dug around the 1860's in our area in order to bring a flume in to wash down the hillside on the opposite side of the mountain, so I wanted to see if LIDAR could find it. They never finished the tunnel because the civil war broke out, but it's interesting history.

      Nobody is saying that QGIS isn't great, it is. The issue for the majority of detectorists is the incredibly steep learning curve.

      @@unearthers Do you know of a Mac equivalent to Easy View? When I went to download it I realised it's 100% Windows-based. I've tried searching online but as I'm not really sure what I'm looking for (ie a generic term for that kind of software) I'm not having much luck. Any guidance you can offer would be much appreciated👍

    Very nice! I use OASIS Montaj that I have from work - it's expensive and clearly not avaialble to most people. I did try QGIS but found it cumbersome and difficult to set the DTM view straight out of the box. I store all my finds info in an Excel spreadsheet that I can update and instantly import into an OASIS database and then map the positions. Is that possible in CARIS?

    • @unearthers
      @unearthers  2 года назад +2

      It's tricky isn't it. QGIS can work, but it's such a steep learning curve. I believe CARIS is just for interpretation/viewing. I hadn't explored any possibility of the above. I did look at the idea of layering over a tithe map for example, but couldn't find a way to do so. That is a limitation of it. It's a viewer only.

    • @stefkuna
      @stefkuna 2 года назад +2

      @Unearthers looks like the freebie viewer is for looking at grids etc. but not databases. I'm sure the metal detecting community would like to have an easy to use GIS targeted to their needs - import DTMs, maps and finds. I can do all that in OASIS but wouldn't be doing it if I didn't have access to a work license!

    • @unearthers
      @unearthers  2 года назад +2

      @@stefkuna I agree. I use Global Mapper commercially and a set of the features there would do well. Even if it was a low pay solution , say £39, I think people would Invest.

      Anthony, if side by side exists in your area, then a form of these maps do too. On the side by side, it should tell you the source map. Match it to the environment agency offering. It may not be the 1m map like I use, but some have 50cm,.25cm maps or more likely 2m maps
