How Inside Out 2 Perfectly Depicts Anxiety

- In this Video I talk about Pixar's newest hit Inside Out 2 which returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen.
The meticulous design of Anxiety in "Inside Out 2" is a masterclass in character creation. By blending psychological insights with creative artistry, they’ve crafted a character that is both relatable and engaging.

Great video Like always bro
Good vid mate
Good analysis
Great video
I like that she's not quite just a person who is inately anxious, rather someone who imposed anxiety and insecurity onto Riley
Great take
I love they showed how JOY is what can help manage ANXIETY
This was a good moment
While watching for the first time, I had kind of expected Val and her friends to start to lead Riley down a bad path, like smoking or stealing or other things like that, and Anxiety was going to pushing her as well so that she can be friends with them. But no. Val and her friends never do anything wrong, which I think actually works even better. It goes to show Anxiety that everything she was worrying about, actually was just all in her head, and that sometimes, she can calm down and not worry so much.
Yea the movie could of took a dark turn
Great insight
Well, I do think Val's friends were kinda being dicks to her with all the teasing, but that's just standard teenage stuff.
I think something worth noting is out of all the FireHawks, Val is the only one who is openly sympathy and encouraging to Riley. This doesn't mean the other players are malicious, but they don't have a lot of patience towards an almost freshman. Val often has to push them to be kinder cause Val is consciously keeping in mind how it feels to be the Newbie.
It's so accurate I almost felt my own anxiety starting to get triggered lol. As someone with anxiety disorder, that scene felt so close to home. When the emotions hugged her and then her sense of self was echoing, I was augly crying so bad.
A very touching scene
i like how they make it clear that anxiety can be a very useful emotion, helping you stay with your feet on the ground and get things done but if its out of control its distructive, pretty much like every emotion, even joy
Yep
I love the small detail where when Riley bumps into Grace, she didn’t see her. Fear is supposed to protect her from the things she can see. And since he wasn’t there, that’s why it happened
Good catch
Also represents brain fog and hyperfocus/worry overwhelming the mind too, triple catch
I think it was a good thing the creators scraped the Anxiety as a Monster design, cause while it would’ve been neat it really would’ve undermined the story and emotional complexity they were going for. Cause Anxiety isn’t evil simply misguided. She never sought to do harm it just happened due to her overpowering hold and controlling nature, she’s not a ravenous beast more of an overbearing parent in a way. This definitely helped the story where her original design would’ve more hurt the story
@@hyperdreamer9483 w take honestly 🙏
@@MediaMunchies495 Thank you 😊
Yeah, I love how instead of pulling a Frozen and made Anxiety a full-on, evilly-cackling, mustache-twirling villain, they went the more logical route and made her very similar to how the feeling is in real life. Simply glorious.
In a way, you can kinda see Joy and Anxiety as having embodied opposite extremes. Anxiety acted no different than Joy on dictating which emotions are "important" (Anxiety excludes the main five emotions while Joy constantly pushes Sadness away). Joy represents the desire for bliss, but can go overbroad without consideration for others (i.e. when Riley used her phone without listening to the coach) whereas Anxiety represents a planner who tries to predict every possible scenario and plan for each of them, but ends up overstressing and not getting any proper results while also ironically not preparing for unpredictable things (i.e. Riley's getting a panic attack when she was too focused on scoring and accidentally knocked her own friend over).
It's also shown that in order for there to be a truly developed Sense of Self, positive and negative memories are essential. While Anxiety is wrong for making Riley doubt herself as an overachiever, Joy is also wrong for trying to instill only positivity without actually learning from mistakes. So it ends with Joy letting the new one flourish by itself instead of dictating which memory forms the sense of self
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts
@@MediaMunchies495 I also like that in the scene where Riley apologises to her friends, the emotions weren't controlling her.
So it shows that even without the emotions pushing her, she is still able to do things by herself.
Didn’t really know the writers correlation between fear and anxiety totally went over my head 😅
Glad I brought some insight
That's why their ship makes sense
@@jesustovar2549 yep
The way anxiety depicted itself as the most sophisticated emotion I think perfectly shows how our overthinking, based on pessimistic logic, has a habit of convincing us that reason is the only aspect of ourselves capable of knowing truth. We end up overthinking so much with an overactive temporal frontal lobe that it over regulates the amydela and this might just mean that our other emotions such as will to live can be repressed.
🫡
You can already see the mini anxiety attack when pushed in the music part, something like that can give older people with anxiety disorder an real attack, like just not knowing how to respond when you realize the others do clearly disagree with something you think
W take
This film really touched me, especially with the scene where Riley gets out of the car to go to the camp and she waits for her parents to leave for her to finally cry. It’s something that I am dealing with right now, I just can’t cry in the open in front of anyone, my mind doesn’t let me bc I don’t want them to worry about me. Or the panic attack it was really powerful for me even though I never experienced one. They just killed it. One thing I love about this, is anyone and I mean anyone can find something in this film that they relate to. I hope you have a good day/ night❤
I cried Watching this movie, for some reason it just hit
My sister was bawling her eyes out
It’s a very touching movie
This was the best Disney movie in like 6 years omg had be bawling at the end it was too relatable
Yea Pixar’s latest movies been flops
8:03
just a small fix: joy put the old sense of self back, and when hearing anxiety say "we can't control who riley is", she pulled it off so a new sense of self could be established using all the memories she tried to discard. i feel like this is kinda acceptance of everything that riley has done, good or bad.
otherwise, great video! ur almost at 2.5k subs 🔥
Thank you for the correction and for liking the video
@@MediaMunchies495 no problem
All I know is that, considering one of my disorders, Anxiety is a horrible curse to have.
@@Tokuijin yea it sucks
I cried when Riley had a mental breakdown, very emotional, I really liked this movie. I constantly fear as though I might fail, or even vision different scenarios if I say the wrong or right thing whilst scared of the responses I might get. I subscribed to your channel after watching your incredibles video, time to binge watch your videos.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it this 🙏
@@MediaMunchies495 No prob!
One thing I think that would be interesting to add was the fact that her eye color stood out from the rest. Hers was out of place compared to someone like sadness, who's blue eyes match her vibe. Other than that, great video!
Thank you that’s was a great detail
She's also kinda NUTS!
Very crazy extremely nuts
@@revinhatol Anxiety was caffeine made into a being
I cried while watching this movie. It couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I was diagnosed with G.A.D a 2 years ago and had just recently realized I had selective mutism as well. This is definitely my new favorite Pixar movie, I'm so happy that it exists
Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts 🙏
@@MediaMunchies495 I honestly never thought we'd get anxiety representation in Western media THIS good. I always thought we'll always get the awkward quirky protagonist who has mental breakdowns over the most minor of things yet somehow all the other characters somehow don't realize they have anxiety (Like in Miraculous Ladybug). My kind of anxiety is different from what you'd expect, I look calm on the outside but having a meltdown on the inside. And when I'm around uncomfortable social situations I don't just start awkwardly doing stupid stuff, I just quietly try to avoid it. I'm glad Inside Out 2 showed viewers (Including lots of kids and parents!) that anxiety is a spectrum, and not all people with anxiety (Whether that be just the feeling or an anxiety disorder) is the same. Now I don't have to rely solely on anime on giving my good anxiety rep! Hooray for me, I can finally get into Western animation again!
I enjoy feeling joy and sadness, but my anxiety actually helps me to stay diligent and top of things before they happen, sometimes exhausting and overblown like all emotions though
Thx for your insight I feel like this sometimes also
Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it with the handle of anxiety or the handle of faith.
Ngl I mess with the quote heavy
I searched what emotion I am based on my zodiac sign, since I'm Aquarius, I AM Anxiety, my Mother has called me anxious in the past, I totally understand Anxiety's motivation of planning for the future, I'm always thinking about the future, possible scenarios good or bad, I also like what she says, "a good plan has different parts", that scene of Anxiety's Attack, is like a sabotage to the console, she was like Flash, but then redeemed, when all the emotions hug Riley's Beliefs' System, I recognized myself, flaws and all.
It's been weeks since I went to see this movie and I can't stop thinking about it, I want to see it again🧡💜
Thank you for sharing you story I really appreciate it
I sobbed watching this.
@@GGMike09 that’s deep, everything’s ok?
I’ve seen a video that doesn’t think anxiety or the other new emotions are justified for being a thing and think it’s lazy that they didn’t do more with the 5 core emotions and the difference between anxiety and fear isn’t enough. The new emotions roles were already handled in the first movie according to them.
I can’t tell if this is just some opinion they had or if it’s genuinely something wrong with the sequel.
This video on the other hand is interesting though.
Appreciate it
No, that's just bad media literacy. Riley is a teen now, which means that her emotions/beliefs are gonna be more nuanced than in the first movie, where a child's emotions are more simplified (example would whereas a child would think "I like this boy band," a teenager would think "I like this boy band, but I'm gonna listen to the bands the cool kids are listening to because it's better"). That alone justifies the new emotions in the movie.
@@yeeyeeyeeye and besides, the movie would just be kinda boring and the same thing as the first one.
Nice vid I loved the incredibles video keep making videos like this
Thank you 🙏
I have Anxiety As Well because I Worry about the Future I fear something terrible is going to happen to us like Natural Disasters Wars Losing a Loved One being Alone
I'm really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way. It's tough to carry those kinds of worries, especially when the future feels uncertain. You're not alone in feeling this way-many people share similar fears. It can be helpful to talk about your feelings with someone you trust or consider speaking with a mental health professional who can offer support. Taking small steps to manage anxiety, like practicing mindfulness or grounding exercises, can also make a difference. Remember, you're not alone in this.
Thanks
I love this, finally something positive abt this show

6:28 The first design of anxiety look like godzilla so i think thats the reason why they have to scrap it (especially when toho would probably sue pixar for using a look like godzilla without their notice).
Good point
I hope when the digital comes out you can update the video with a better version of the movie clips, because overall this is such a nice analysis vid, easy to understand.
Thx, it was extremely hard to find good quality clips
You choose topics, and speak on them well.
You mentioned a strong perception of yourself helps with anxiety, but I wonder a lot on the concept of self.
How does one gain a sense of self? How does the perception of yourself, weigh to others perception of you? How do you truly know how others see you, and who’s perception of you do is to be value the most?
I think of being on the bus, looking around and establishing judgment onto people I will only see for the duration of the bus ride. Whom am I to judge someone based of such little time, is that perception valid?
Counter, if I were so delusioned with context into myself to justify horrid acts, would a stranger on the bus, be better able to judge that bad act, as opposed to my own perception with context leading to justification?
I’ve experienced both a delusioned sense of self, though I run into others who have a delusioned sense of myself as well. To each person, I am perceived in their own unique frame, to each person, I am a different person. With these questions, I am confused as to who I really am.
Yea, she is perfect
the first time i watched it in cinemas, i had a panic attack while riley was, and i ended up vomiting in the middle of the theatre lol
It also makes sense that Anxiety and Envy were BFFs in the movie. Because a few people have noted that Anxiety often comes with Envy.
For example:
You see a skinny person and you wish could be as skinny as they are, then you get anxiously start thinking you’re fat, and thereby not good enough for society.
I never comment, but this is an incredible video!!
Thank you so much I’m trying my best to
I notice that only one person disliked your video somehow.
🤷🏾
Awesome video my dude! I was thinking maybe you could try to make a video out of incredibles 2? Ik its not really big as the first but i think something could come out of it.
I got you I’ll put it down in my notes
again, nice video

Great video. Very very small nitpick, maybe keep the text to the CC section. Having the text in the video kinda distracted me from paying attention to the visuals that you are pointing out, like anxiety's design.
Noted will implement changes in my next video
