In just a few days, India is gearing up for what could be the largest voter turnout in history as it heads into parliamentary elections. An astonishing 969 million voters are set to cast their ballots to elect 543 members to the Lok Sabha.
However, concerns have been raised about the health of India's democracy under PM Modi's leadership. It's not just me saying it. According to the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) 2024 report, India ranks 104th among 179 countries worldwide in terms of democracy. Even our neighbours like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have fared better.
Under the Modi-led NDA government, India has recently been labelled as one of the worst autocratisers by the V-Dem report. V-Dem highlights that the level of "liberal democracy" experienced by the average Indian has declined to levels last seen in 1975 during the state of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi.
V-Dem, a Sweden-based research project, evaluates democracy across the globe. Their data sets gauge various aspects of democracy, including civil liberties, government functionality, and electoral processes.

There can be no doubt that democracy in India has degraded to levels never thought of under the current regime. My experience is that whenever there is an absolute majority given to a single Political Party in Lok Sabha or State Vidhan Sabha, it starts behaving like an autocratic entity! Only our first Union Government of India led by Late J L Nehru was an exception. Hence in Democracy, balance of power, autonomy of Constitutional Institutions, Rule of Law, Free Media, Constitutional supremacy, safe guarding the Basic Structure of the Constitution, respect for federal structure and the Prime Minister/ Chief Minister(s) with good intent are important ingredients to Democracy.
Didn't Nehru push for and got inserted “reasonable restrictions” on freedom of expression as part of the First Amendment to the Indian Constitution? Ironically, it was SANGHI Syama Prasad Mookerjee who took on Nehru and called the AMENDMENT “scandalous", Mookerjee advocated unfettered freedom of expression on the lines of what Sweden had, and yet he was called a ‘fascist’.
Nehru then banned The novel, Nine Hours to Rama, written by Stanley Wolpert in 1962, as the book, a fictional account on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination by Godse, as well as the film based on it.
There were more than a dozen books that faced the censor’s ire during Nehru’s era, such as Alexander Campbell’s The Heart of India (1959), banned due to a fictionalised and humorous account of India’s bureaucracy and economic policymaking.

The trend of buying votes, is practiced by opposition parties. In Tamil Nadu, every voter was given Rs.2000/- by the so called saviour of democracy.

One thing I agree- ED, CBI, NIA etc agencies should be made independent and very strengthened like judiciary so that every leaders, ministers from every party or government is subjected to it.
But if it's democratic backsliding (the thing itself is bad) then what to say to the previous ones because under INC/UPA rule only 5his started and several dozens or even hundreds of leaders from opposition were jailed in 60 years and dozens of state governments cancelled( which didn't happen now). So why not push or voice to change the system instead of just parties bcoz the other ones aren't good enough or even worse.
Moreover if this is threat to democracy, then what can we say to West Bengal where even CPIM & INC wants President rule & Sitaram Yechuri called 2023 panchayat as a shameless slaughter of democracy as 45 people died in a month & 18 in a day which widespread mob rule & hooliganism for poll rigging, horrifying voters and stopping them from very democratic right to vote, even election duty workers weren't spared(they were crying for lives & some ran with central forces to escape), where ballot boxes were thrown away into drains or burnt. And things went no better while counting where no opposition agent or candidate was allowed in counting hall & literally at 1 place 5 ballots were "eaten" as a TMC candidate lost by 4 votes to CPIM(not BJP) so he wins. All top in political murders. So real destruction or salughter of democracy including its mauckery of the highest degree is happening here since last 55 years, shouldn't there be a national voice to revive democracy here after 6 decades!

All this educated talks are well meaning but it does not reach 70 percent of the population. Why? Simply bcoz the 70 percent are not really educated in english or enhanced regional dialects.
