  • Here's a lesser known documentary narrated by David Attenborough about the albatross bird affectionately known as Grandma in New Zealand, which was for a while, the oldest banded birds in the world. While this documentary was already available online, this should be an decent upgrade over these other versions.
    __
With its three-metre wingspan the northern royal albatross is the world's largest seabird. This is the story of Grandma, the oldest known, tagged bird. A gentle sociable bird, Grandma was one of the first albatross to call at Taiaroa Head, near Dunedin, the only mainland breeding colony in the world. Join Grandma six decades on and share in the intimacy of courtship, engagement and the life-long bonding of this rare and beautiful bird. After 60 years of coming back to the same spot to breed, Grandma never returned. Grandma's final flight captured here, was her last.
    Running time: Approx 55 minutes.

Great documentary! I loved the sequence about 17 minutes in, with the albatross flying and that music playing...beautiful.

Extremely interesting documentary-----and by our national treasure, Sir David too. All credit to the conservation rangers and the vital work they do to protect and ensure the survival of these magnificent sea birds the Royal Albatross of New Zealand. (Grandma is amazing)
